Authorities will begin distributing an experimental Ebola vaccine in Mbandaka, a major city in the Democratic Republic of Congo, on Monday to try to stop the spread of the deadly virus.Healthcare workers in Mbandaka, the capital of Equateur Province and home to 1.2 million people, will be the first to receive the vaccine, World Health Organization spokesman Tarik Ja?arevi? said. The confirmation of the first case in Mbandaka last week has raised concerns that the virus could spread faster than expected. So far, 26 people have died in the outbreak, according to the WHO.The vaccine, called rVSV-ZEBOV, will likely be distributed to some 8,000 to 10,000 people in its first phase, Peter Salama, deputy director-general of emergency preparedness and response at the WHO, said Friday. It will be given to people who have had contact with people infected with Ebola and contacts of those contacts, Salama said.Ebola is an incredibly contagious virus which causes the sudden onset of symptoms including fever, fatigue and muscle pain within two to 21 days after infection. Patients suffer vomiting, rash and diarrhea, impaired kidney and liver function -- and in some cases internal and external bleeding. An outbreak in 2014 in West Africa killed more than 11,000 people in months. 1287

As we're all focused on the current rollout of the COVID-19 vaccine, a technology known as thin-film freezing is getting a lot of attention. It's groundbreaking and could change the way we administer drugs or use medicine in general. You've probably heard about the need to keep the COVID-19 vaccine cold. It has to be so cold, in fact, that the shipment and transport are challenging. Well, what if that vaccine could be turned into powder?“What we’ve most recently been working on is the elimination of cold chain by storing as a powder, a dry powder where the drug is much more stable than if it was stored as a liquid or as a frozen liquid,” said co-inventor Dr. Robert Williams.Williams said it would eliminate the need for extreme cold storage and transport. The technology isn't new. He got a research grant and came up with it about 15 years ago.Williams, who is also a pharmacy professor at the University of Texas in Austin, said they were working on the technology and its multiple uses when the pandemic hit. And all of a sudden, they got a lot of attention.“We have published over 70 papers on the technology and using it for different products- it’s quite a mature process," Williams said. "We developed it because with other vaccines, the majority of the vaccine cost is in wastage because of this cold chain issue, so we published several key papers where we showed our thin-film freezing technology would protect vaccines - and you wouldn’t need cold chain storage.”Glenn Mattes, President, and CEO of TFF Pharmaceuticals added that the powders can be converted to topical preparations and they are currently working with the US Army to take some of the preparations and would then administer them directly through the eye.TFF is launching thin-film freezing into development through the FDA process. “I use the term ubiquitous because it is and disruptive because it is,” Mattes said. He added that they've explored their technology in the cannabinoid realm. But, as for the COVID vaccine, they're aiming for a second-generation usage.“To truly eradicate the pandemic, you have to have a global response," Mattes said. "The companies we’ve been speaking to certainly recognize the broad utilization of the technology but the application to the developing world, rural area, remote areas, where you can take a powder and inhale it or take the powder and reconstitute it has tremendous potential."Experts say it is only just the beginning as they launch their technology into a new world. 2511

As scientists learn more about COVID-19, they are realizing that how people react to the virus could be based on the body's response to viruses like common colds.Meharry Medical College President Dr. James Hildreth says some studies are showing some individuals have T-cell responses to COVID-19 even though they never been exposed to it.He is talking about recent research revealing that some people may have immunity defenders called T-cells which could determine how their body reacts to COVID-19.According to the CDC, when the body fights an infection, the immune system remembers what it learned about how to protect the body against that disease. The body will retain a few specific T-cells known as memory cells - that will alert and help the immune system identify and produce antibodies to attack the foreign germ if it enters the body again."Viruses that look alike can sometimes elicit the same kinds of immune responses," said Hildreth.Hildreth says there are six strains of coronavirus that affect humans going back to the 1960s and some result in seasonal common colds. He says if you were infected with one of these viruses in the past it can determine the severity of the toll COVID-19 would take on your body now."There’s the possibility that a response to one of them gives you a partial to another because they have genetic similarities," said Hildreth.Hildreth says this doesn't mean a person has complete immunity to COVID-19."There’s strong evidence that you may not be immune to the virus, but you’ll have an immune response that recognizes SARS partially just because those two viruses look so much alike."Hildreth says this can help with treatments and even vaccinesThis story was originally reported by Kelsey Gibbs at WTVF. 1756

ASPEN, Colo. — Rachel Zoe says her 9-year-old son, Sky, survived a 40-foot drop from a ski lift in Colorado on Sunday. The fashion designer and former reality TV star opened up about the scary incident on her Instagram story on Monday.Zoe said “ski patrol heroes” saved her son by quickly putting a mat under where they thought the boy would fall. She explained that she thinks the incident could have "easily" been prevented if a ski operator had stopped the lift when they saw Sky wasn’t on from the beginning.A representative for the Aspen Skiing Company said in a statement that it received a report of the child hanging from the lift at its Buttermilk ski area at about 2:48 p.m. When crews responded to lift, the representative says the boy was being held by an instructor and his father, who were on the chair with the child.“The boy was released and dropped to the pads below, where ski patrol was on scene,” said Jeff Hanle, VP of Communications at Aspen Skiing Company. “He was treated by patrol, brought to the base area and transported to the hospital by ambulance for examination.”Although the boy is “sore and banged up a bit,” Zoe says her son is in “great spirits” and is a “brave champion.”Zoe also posted a video of Sky explaining how he’s feeling and walking around for the camera.“Hi everyone. I’m Ok. I’m just sore,” Sky said. “And to show you that I’m OK, I’m going to stand up. See look, I can stand up and I can walk. And I’m totally fine. It’s just I’m a little sore. I’m kind of hurting, but I’m fine.”Zoe said she and her husband, Rodger Berman, have never been grateful for seeing their child do the most simple tasks, like walking, talking and laughing.“Truth be told, Sky was more brave then either of us and we continue to just kiss, hug and simply just stare at him until further notice,” wrote Zoe. “Hug your babies extra from us today.” 1877
