The FDA issued an emergency use authorization for a saliva-based coronavirus test that has been used to identify COVID-19 cases by NBA players. Leading officials are calling the test a “game-changer.”The SalivaDirect test is said to be both rapid in its findings, and inexpensive. We simplified the test so that it only costs a couple of dollars for reagents, and we expect that labs will only charge about per sample. If cheap alternatives like SalivaDirect can be implemented across the country, we may finally get a handle on this pandemic, even before a vaccine,” said Nathan Grubaugh, a scientist with Yale Public Health.Yale scientists say that the nasal samples are less invasive than swabbing, but are equally as accurate.“This is a huge step forward to make testing more accessible,” said Chantal Vogels, a Yale postdoctoral fellow. “This started off as an idea in our lab soon after we found saliva to be a promising sample type of the detection of SARS-CoV-2, and now it has the potential to be used on a large scale to help protect public health. The Georgia Democratic Party and gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams' campaign filed a lawsuit in federal court Sunday asking for rejected absentee ballots and provisional ballots to be counted in the Georgia governor's race.The lawsuit challenges the rejection of more than 1,000 absentee ballots for missing information or mismatching information, like birth dates or addresses.The lawsuit also seeks relief for voters whose provisional ballots were rejected in Gwinnett and Dekalb counties, which are in the Atlanta metro area, because they are registered in a different county.CNN has not projected a winner in the race.Republican candidate Brian Kemp currently leads Abrams with 50.3% of the vote. If Kemp's share dips below 50%, the race automatically goes into a run-off on December 4, even if Kemp is the top vote-getter. For now, Kemp's lead stands at nearly 59,000 votes. 891

The Connecticut Supreme Court has vacated Michael Skakel's conviction in a decades-old murder case and ordered a new trial.The ruling is the latest in a long legal battle waged by Skakel, 57, the nephew of Robert and Ethel Kennedy, who was accused of brutally killing a teenaged girl in 1975.He served about half of a 20-year sentence but was freed on bond in 2013, when the courts first ordered a new trial.The court ruled that Skakel's attorney, Michael Sherman, "rendered ineffective assistance" by failing to identify an alibi witness for his client, and that as a result, Skakel was deprived of a fair trial.Prosecutors can choose to retry Skakel, according to the decision, but the defense would now have the benefit of that alibi testimony. The Cambridge Analytica?scandal has thrust Facebook privacy settings into the national conversation after the political firm used the personal data of about 50 million people without their consent.Now, Mozilla is helping Firefox users keep their Facebook data secure so they won't be exploited in the future.The company has introduced a Firefox extension that it says will make it much harder for Facebook to track which websites you browse.Facebook has developed a network of trackers that tell the social media site which of its users are visiting certain webpages, like online retailers. Facebook will then use that information to serve its users ads based on what products they've been viewing.Mozilla says its Facebook Container extension will make it much more difficult to track which websites you visit, and keep your browsing information private.Mozilla admits the extension isn't perfect. In a blog post, the company said that the extension would not have prevented user information from being abused in the Cambridge Analytica scandal. It also says that Facebook Container would not work well on sites which require you to use Facebook information to log in.But Mozilla says the simple step of downloading the extension is giving power back to internet users. "Troves of data are being collected on your behavior on the internet, and so giving users a choice to limit what they share in a way that is under their control is important," the company wrote.To download Facebook container, first download the free Mozilla Firefox browser if you're not already using it.
