SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- We’ve known for a while that COVID-19 hits people over 65 especially hard, but a study published Wednesday from researchers in San Diego offers new insight into why that happens.The numbers are staggering: if you’re 65 or older, your risk of winding up in the hospital from COVID-19 is five to 11 times higher than someone under 30. Your risk of death is at least 90 times higher, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.Researchers at the La Jolla Institute for Immunology say the reason why older people fare so much worse appears to be from a lack of T-cells, a type of white blood cell that can decline with age.“Some viruses get controlled by one part of the immune system. Some viruses get controlled by another. In this case it seems that T-cells really do a lot of the work,” said Dr. Shane Crotty, one of the authors of the study published Wednesday in the journal Cell.Dr. Crotty and his colleagues looked at 50 people infected with the virus, and they measured the three elements of the adaptive immune system in detail: antibodies, helper T-cells and killer T-cells.Then they compared the measurements to how people fared against the virus. Some patients in the study group had severe cases, others had mild infections.The researchers found that people with all three branches of the adaptive immune system tended to fully recover. People with severe cases of the virus often lacked one or more of the immune branches, and it was particularly evident in older people.“Our data indicated that of the older individuals, it was particularly the ones that had fewer T-cells to start that look like they really struggled to control this virus,” Dr. Crotty said.As we age, we have fewer T-cells to send after invading pathogens. “That collection of T-cells gets smaller. So it’s harder to recognize a new virus,” Crotty said.Among the 748 deaths in San Diego County reported as of Wednesday, 87% were people aged 60 and older.The findings from LJI may have implications in the search for a vaccine against COVID-19. The data suggests that vaccine-makers may want to target a drug that elicits all three branches of the immune response, Dr. Crotty said. Some vaccine approaches, such as inactivated virus vaccines, only elicit two of three branches, not killer T-cells. However, Crotty said it was too soon to rule any candidates. Two strong branches produced by a vaccine could potentially cover for the lack of a third, he said.Crotty said the findings could help vaccine-makers interpret results from the clinical trials and find the right dosing.“Is a given vaccine a good vaccine, and you just need a booster immunization?” he said. “Does it work well in one population but it doesn’t help in the elderly because it doesn’t generate a T-cell response, for example? Those are the scenarios when this type of knowledge will come into play.” 2906

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- A mother from Sacramento is back in San Diego to search for her missing son, a San Diego State graduate who was living in Pacific Beach.Wesley Billingsly was last heard from on June 12, 2018. He was supposed to meet friends for dinner in Pacific Beach, but never showed up.Since then, there has been no sign of him.He is 5’8”, 130 pounds with hazel eyes and brown hair. He has several tattoos.Christel Billingsly, Wesley’s mother, has spent her days posting fliers, reaching out to people on social media, and keeping up with the San Diego Police missing person’s investigation into her son’s disappearance.“He was here actively driving these streets, going to that Vons to get gas,” she said while standing in a Vons parking lot on Garnet Avenue. “And then he just disappears?”She is offering a ,000 reward to anyone who helps bring her son home.“I know somebody that's reading these posters knows where my son is,” she said. “They need to speak up and tell me where he is because this is enough, it's enough.”Back in August, Christel Billingsley flew to San Diego from Sacramento and spent her son's 25th birthday searching for him.Police located his vehicle in the South Bay but that has been the only trace of him. After that Christel Billingsly made her way to Mexico to search for him.“I went and met with the police in Mexico, I had a translator with me,” she said. “I went and filed a missing report,” she also checked morgues and jails.She said her son had earned a degree in business administration and marketing from SDSU. He moved back home to Sacramento briefly to work and save enough money to return to San Diego.Once he returned, he was staying with different friends at homes in Pacific Beach as he looked for jobs.Christel pays her son’s cellphone bill and said the phone stopped showing any activity once he disappeared. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – With testing of potential COVID-19 vaccines speeding up and clinical trials underway, there are some who say they won’t be getting one once a vaccine is in production.Gwen Strickland said her son experienced a severe reaction to a common vaccine."It was something that had never crossed my mind until I witnessed it,” Strickland told ABC 10News.When Strickland hears talk of a potential coronavirus vaccine, she's skeptical the benefits outweigh the risks.RELATED: San Diego clinic to begin trials of coronavirus vaccine"I'd want to see some really long-term data that could guarantee it before I'd be comfortable injecting it into my body or my family," she said.As the pandemic continues on, the race to create a reliable vaccine pushes forward. Some companies are already in the later phases of their trials, including American biotech company Moderna.Moderna’s Phase 3 trial is being conducted at UC San Diego, under the supervision of principal investigator Dr. Stephen Spector.While earlier stages involved healthy people, these new patients will be those at higher risk of developing the disease or with underlying conditions."They are the people who can most benefit and we want to make sure if we have a vaccine it works in these individuals," said Spector.Spector said this particular trial will include 30,000 patients around the country.The size is designed to give researchers a better idea of how safe it could be in the larger population.He said one of the most frequent questions he gets is: Can I get coronavirus from the vaccine?"The answer is absolutely no, the vaccine does not contain the virus,” said Spector.While Dr. Spector and other health experts say a vaccine is the key to getting the virus under control, parents like Strickland say they won't be lining up to get injected. 1830

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A local Marine's dreams are close to becoming a reality in the form of a massive property in Dulzura. It is not just for Kalani Creutzberg. His efforts to help others prompted an Animal Planet star to join the cause. Nate Schoemer was also a Marine. He was fresh out of high school with his blood type on his boots when he joined the invasion of Iraq.  "The first group was out there for three days and when they came back you could tell that they've just been through hell," Schoemer said. "This is hard for me to talk about," he said with tears in his eyes. It is especially hard to him to discuss it with civilians who often cannot comprehend the horrors of war. He lost some friends on that deployment in 2003."I could hear it from where I was," he started. "I mean I could hear them screaming," It haunted his heart on home soil., but he said his dog's love lifted his spirits. "I need to continue on this mission and helping others the way she helped me," he added.When he got out of the service he became a master dog trainer. He went on to host an Animal Planet show called "Rescue Dog to Super Dog". In it, he saved shelter dogs and turned them into service dogs for people in need. In episode one, he trained Bas for Creutzberg, which is how the two met. Creutzberg survived chilling deployments, but the fight for his life followed him home. "Before I knew it I was homeless," Creutzberg explained. "It was embarrassing, it was shameful," Bas gave him a sense of purpose. "When I was going there to rescue him he was actually the one rescuing me," Creutzberg added. Now, he is on a mission to give homeless vets a home. He plans to buy a property that is nearly 300 acres in Dulzura. "We're going to run our day to day operations very much like when we were back in the service," he explained. "There will be structure, we will work together…… the very things that a lot of us miss."It does not end there.  They will also rescue homeless dogs  about to be euthanized."[We'll] allow both the veterans and the dogs to grow relationships and start anew," he said. Schoemer believed in the Cammies and Canines Sanctuary so much, he joined the efforts. He plans to turn some of the dogs on death row into service dogs for vets. "Just being around Marines and veterans is a great thing,"  Schoemer said with a big grin. Their goal is to get back to tackling battles together.
