(KGTV) - Students in the San Dieguito Union High School District won't be returning to campus in January.Monday morning, the school board voted to confirm that it will not continue with its reopening plan that would have brought students back on campus one day a week beginning on January 4th, with the option of returning five days a week on the 27th.The move comes after the union representing the teachers filed a lawsuit last week to block the return.Jason Barry's daughter is in 7th at Earl Warren Middle School. She was looking forward to returning to class."Here we are again, kicking the can down the road. I hope this isn't a pattern that is going to continue," said Barry.Barry broke the news to his daughter Monday after the board vote. "She's gone from, as this whole thing has gone on, she's gone from tears to frustration to just quiet," said Barry.Newly elected Trustee Michael Allman was the only board member to vote against ratifying the settlement reached last week with the union."We offer all this accommodation so that these essential workers, who are guaranteed the highest paid in the county can teach our kids, and they say thank you by filing a lawsuit , and then they offer to settle as they hold the kids as bargaining chips and I just don't want to reward that behavior," said Allman during the meeting which was held via Zoom.The California Teachers Association filed a legal petition on behalf of the San Dieguito Faculty Association. The union said the district's reopening plan violated the state's public health rules concerning the pandemic.Under the state's health mandate, schools that were already open for in-person instruction were allowed to remain open. The legal petition challenged the district's definition of "open," alleging that none of the schools was open for regular instruction; instead, they were open for small cohorts.The union also estimated up to 20% of teachers would not return in January either for health concerns or childcare issues.Barry and other parents are starting a grassroots effort to make it easier for people to become substitutes. Many parents say they are willing to step in to help fill the void. The district has said there is a shortage of subs."Whatever I need to do, to get this across the line if I need to be a substitute teacher, be one body that can help, I'm going to do that," said Barry.Barry said he worries about the impact of remote learning on his daughter's development."This whole situation is causing a stunting to, I would say, an entire generation of kids who should be engaging, learning, growing, expanding their boundaries, and now they are stuck at home not testing themselves with their peers. ESCONDIDO (CNS) - A Pauma Valley man accused of ambushing three San Diego County sheriff's deputies at his home in a rural area near Casino Pauma, sparking a nearly six-hour standoff in which he suffered a gunshot wound, was charged today with three counts of assault with a semiautomatic firearm on a peace officer.Arraignment for 28-year-old Jose Nieto at Palomar Medical Center was postponed until Jan. 11 because he was deemed medically unfit for the proceeding while being treated for the gunshot wound he sustained during last Thursday's standoff.The complaint against Nieto includes allegations of personal use and discharge of a firearm. He faces 33 years and eight months in prison if convicted, said Deputy District Attorney Michael Runyon.The standoff began around 4:15 p.m. on Dec. 20, when deputies Cory Crawford, Jared Muli, and John Avedesian went to a home in the 156-00 block of Adams Drive in response to a a 911 call from a man who said "he needed help and didn't feel safe in his home."As the three deputies approached the front door of the home, they were met with gunfire, said sheriff's Lt. Rich Williams.The deputies returned fire, established a perimeter around the home and called for backup, including a SWAT team. Nearby residents were evacuated from their homes and surrounding streets were shut down. The deputies were not injured.Authorities spend hours trying to establish communication with the gunman, but when that was unsuccessful, the SWAT team entered the home about 10 p.m. and found Nieto inside with a gunshot wound to his lower body, Williams said. 1598

(KGTV) - The bluffs that collapsed in North San Diego County Friday, killing three people, are a known trouble spot to a local geologist.Former San Diego State University professor Dr. Pat Abbott has led several geology field trips to Grandview Beach to point out unstable cliffs. Abbott described the cliff as a “solid mass of sand grains cemented together” that suddenly gave way on a sunny and warm afternoon. Waves erode the shoreline in addition to groundwater that seeps into the bluffs, leaving behind white streaks of salt and creating cracks, Abbott said. Facebook has suspended 200 apps for possible misuse of user data in the wake of the Cambridge Analytica scandal.Facebook said in a blog post Monday that it has investigated thousands of apps after it emerged that Cambridge Analytica had harvested information on about 87 million users without their knowledge.It did not name the apps that have been suspended but said they would be subject to a more thorough investigation into how they handle user data.Cambridge Analytica, which worked on President Donald Trump's 2016 election campaign, used data collected via an app developed by University of Cambridge psychology professor Aleksandr Kogan. The app offered a personality test, but Facebook users who downloaded it also gave the professor permission to collect data on their location, their friends and content they had "liked."Kogan provided that data to Cambridge Analytica, in a breach of Facebook's rules.
