Each day since November 1, a group called Warriors Journey Home shows up at Veterans Memorial Park in Green, Ohio, offers a brief prayer and then turns their attention to a metal tree that measures less than five feet tall.They quietly hang 22 dog tags on the Witness Tree to represent the 22 veterans who die from suicide each day in the U.S. The final 22 tags will be placed on the tree on Veterans Day."We're going to have 242 dog tags on this tree. Those are 242 lives that didn't have to end this way and we can do something about it," said John Schluep, an Army veteran who runs the local chapter of Warriors Journey Home.Keith Van Buskirk, a veteran of the Marine Corps Reserve, said seeing all of the dog tags is emotional for him."It definitely provokes an emotional response in me. It makes me wish I could shake the hand or hug every one of those war fighters on that tree," Van Buskirk said.Both Schluep and Van Buskirk said they knew veterans who committed suicide."I was called yesterday about a young man who had taken his life, a Marine veteran from Iraq," Schluep said.The non-profit has a mission to provide spiritual healing and soul repair from the invisible wounds for veterans, families and the community.Schluep said there are many reasons for suicides among veterans, including a struggle to find wellness when adjusting from military culture back to civilian life."Loneliness, abandonment, isolation, lack of fitting into that community," Schluep said.Those in the community who support Warriors Journey Home are known as "strong hearts." Their role is considered crucial because they help share some of the burdens that veterans face."Part of that is opening our hearts to listen, to share that responsibility. That's what I want people to think about. EL CAJON (KGTV) -- A motorcyclist who crashed into a parked truck on a residential street in Fletcher Hills has died, El Cajon police said Tuesday.Shortly after the crash, some off-duty nurses rushed to help the critically injured motorcyclist, identified Wednesday as 36-year-old Julian Garcia, allowing emergency crews to rush him to the hospital.Jennifer Lepari said she heard a “loud boom” on Valley Lake Drive near Valley Mill Road around 8:30 p.m. Monday. “It almost shook the house. It was really, really loud,” she said.Lepari and her husband Jerome are both nurses. Jerome quickly used his belt as a tourniquet on the rider’s leg to staunch the bleeding while Jennifer applied pressure and spoke with dispatchers, according to neighbors.“With the amount of blood he lost and the time it took [for emergency crews to arrive], even the cops said [the rider] wouldn’t have lasted if [Jerome] hadn’t done that,” Lepari said.El Cajon police say the motorcyclist struck a parked work truck on Valley Mill Road for unknown reasons. Investigators believe speed may have been a factor but the crash is still under investigation, Lt. Randy Soulard said.A third off-duty nurse who lives around the block also tended to the badly injured rider, neighbors said.“It was awesome to see the people with that sort of medical experience jump in and not hesitate,” said a neighbor named Lisa.Once police arrived, an officer applied a second tourniquet to the rider’s leg, Lt. Doctors warn that a measles outbreak could occur following the COVID-19 pandemic due to a persistent decline in regular doctor's visits.Doctors at Nationwide Children's Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, have noticed that many families are not bringing children in for regular checkups during the pandemic. While there's a variety of vaccines that children should get, doctors are anxious about the drop in measles vaccinations."If not enough kids get enough of a vaccine, measles being one of those vaccinations, you can lose herd immunity," said Dr. Sara Bode, a pediatrician at Nationwide Children's. "That puts us all at risk of having an outbreak of that illness when we get back together again."According to the World Health Organization, at least 93% of the population needs to get the measles vaccine to reach herd immunity.Researchers have found that vaccine rates have dropped as low as 70% in some places in Ohio, which raises concern for a potential measles outbreak.Typically, kids follow a type of "vaccine schedule" throughout their childhood. But many families have put vaccines for their children off amid the COVID-19 pandemic.Doctors say it's not too late to get those shots."If you're delayed in getting the measles vaccine, that's OK," Bode said. "Still come in and get it because it will protect you from the day you start to get it. So really, the only consequence would be that time that you are unprotected."Anyone who is uncomfortable about stepping into a doctor's office should know that efforts are in place to make it a safe space for everyone. EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV) -- El Cajon city leaders will consider the possibility of a ban on the sale of vaping products at their next meeting in November. Tuesday evening, city council leaders heard from dozens of people for and against the idea; but the issue was not on the agenda.Councilman Gary Kendrick first brought up a city-wide ban in July. Tuesday afternoon, he was joined by school leaders, doctors, health officials, and parents who all believe vaping is an epidemic targeting kids. "These people who are selling vaping devices and vaping liquids to our children are profiting from the suffering of our children," said councilman Kendrick. A member of the Cajon Valley Union School Board said vaping is rampant in children as young as elementary age. "The liquids that are being used our being promoted to our youth , having vaping devices available at a very low cost in our liquor stores or 7/11/'s for approximately a dollar is promoting to our children that they can easily have access to them," said Jill Barto. Joey Johnson works at United Smoke Shop and Vape. He says if it weren't for vaping, he'd still be smoking two packs a day. "It's astonishing how much it’s truly helped me," said Johnson. Johnson believes a ban punishes legitimate businesses and will only create a bigger black market. "Gas stations places like that don’t care, so it’s either that or people on the streets or getting THC cartridges from people on the street who don’t know what they’re doing , they’re adding stuff to it to make it “vapable” or able to smoke and that’s the people that are dying," said Johnson. At least twenty-three people across the country have died from vaping related illnesses. In San Diego County, there have been no deaths, but at least twenty-two people have been sickened. One high school student told the council that vaping is rampant in the school bathrooms."The athletic kids vape, the honors kids vape, the college prep kids vape and their parents vape and at this point, it's sad to say, I think it's become a part of high school culture," said the student. Deborah Kelly told city leaders she was outraged at the failure of government to protect children. "Flavored tobacco products taste like candy, but act as poisons and kids don't smoke marijuana, they vape it," said Kelly. The council decided more research is needed before it takes any action on a possible ban. City leaders did vote to increase suspensions and fines for businesses that sell tobacco products to minors. Under the new rules, fines start at ,500 instead of ,000. If a business has a fourth violation within a five-year period, the retailer is subject to a permanent suspension. 2692
