CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- The Sweetwater Union High School District is working with teachers to prepare for distance learning if and when classes resume after Spring Break. The district is currently closed because of coronavirus concerns, but district officials tell 10News plans are already in motion to figure out a way to complete the school year. District spokesperson Manny Rubio tells 10News the district is looking at distance learning, which can mean a number of things. Teachers could either teach virtually from home or provide students with learning material. Rubio says a majority of students already do a lot of online work and many of them have take home devices. The plans include addressing concerns that some students might not have devices or internet at their homes. Wednesday night, the district and the teachers union sent out a letter with guidance and information for teachers on how to move forward. All schools were deep cleaned and sanitized. Some schools are allowing teachers to enter their classrooms to get whatever materials they may need. For now, the plan is to have teachers return from Spring Break and allow for 2-3 days of planning before giving any direction to students and their parents. Officials are also keeping a close eye on updates from the state and the department of education. CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- Health officials are working to notify people possibly exposed to tuberculosis over several months at Southwestern College, according to County News Center. The San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency says the exposure period was from August 20 to November 8, 2018. The college says it will provide no-cost testing to identified students, faculty and staff from December 3 to 14 at Southwestern College Student Health Services. Tuberculosis is transmitted from person-to-person through indoor air during prolonged contact with an infectious individual. (KGTV) - Police have arrested three people in the death of a man found slumped over the steering wheel of his still moving vehicle.Chula Vista Police arrested Britney Canal, 29, of Chula Vista, Cesar Alvarado, 39, of National City, and Michael Pedraza, 27, of San Diego, in the murder of 59-year-old Mario Serhan.Witnesses found Serhan slumped over the steering wheel of his vehicle with an apparent gunshot wound to the head just before 1 p.m. on April 11. (KGTV) -- A developer wants to add 300 more units to the Otay Ranch project in Chula Vista, expanding the housing options on the 35 acre site.Baldwin and Sons, the developer behind the project, is asking for public input at a meeting Tuesday night. It's at 6:30 pm at the Residence Inn by Marriott at 2005 Centerpark Road in Chula Vista.Right now, the project, called Otay Ranch, calls for 600 multi-family units, a 2 acre park, 15,000 square feet of commercial retail and two hotels. One of the hotels opened in 2017 and construction on the 292 planned for-sale condos is underway.Now, they want to add 300 units to the plans."There's a real need for housing in this location," says Nick Lee, a spokesman for Baldwin and Sons.Under the original plans, 300 apartments would have been built, with most of them being two or three-bedroom units. The new plans call for 600 apartments, with 65% of them being either studio apartments or one-bedroom units.Lee says this will bring in more young professionals, instead of families with children. That will minmize the impact on nearby schools, which are all near capacity.People who live nearby are more concerned about the traffic problems that will come about with 1000 new homes in the area."It's unbearable," says Michelle Harrison. "I don't think anyone planned for the congestion we already see on a daily basis."Lee says the soon to open South Bay Rapid from MTS will alleviate some of the traffic problems. The apartments are a 5 minute walk to the Otay Ranch Station.He adds the developers have worked with the city and are keeping the project well within the bounds of the General Plan. (KGTV) — Chula Vista Police have made an arrest in connection with the body of a woman found in a field in August.Police said 28-year-old Vanesa Gastellu was arrested for the murder of Christina Garcia on Aug. 5. Garcia's body was discovered in a field near the 3100 block of Main Street by a passerby.
