U.S. Postmaster General Louis DeJoy said Tuesday that the USPS will not implement operational changes to mail delivery until after the 2020 election."...there are some longstanding operational initiatives — efforts that predate my arrival at the Postal Service — that have been raised as areas of concern as the nation prepares to hold an election in the midst of a devastating pandemic," DeJoy said in a statement. "To avoid even the appearance of any impact on election mail, I am suspending these initiatives until after the election is concluded."DeJoy also said that the USPS would not remove any mail processing equipment or mailboxes and would not close any mail processing facilities between now and the election. The statement did not address whether the agency would restore services or equipment that had been cut prior to Tuesday.DeJoy, a longtime ally and donor to President Donald Trump took over as Postmaster General in June. Since that time, he's instituted several changes that customers and workers have said have led to delays in mail delivery, including the elimination of overtime. NBC News also reports that drivers have been instructed to leave on their routes earlier in the day, even if express shipments haven't arrived. In DeJoy's statement on Tuesday, he asserted that "overtime has, and will continue to be, approved as needed.""Even with the challenges of keeping our employees and customers safe and healthy as they operate amid a pandemic, we will deliver the nation’s election mail on time and within our well-established service standards," DeJoy's statement said. "The American public should know that this is our number one priority between now and election day. The 630,000 dedicated women and men of the Postal Service are committed, ready and proud to meet this sacred duty."With the COVID-19 pandemic continuing to ravage the country, mail-in voting is expected to significantly increase during the 2020 election.Trump — who has staunchly opposed universal mail-in voting — said last week that he opposed funding the USPS in order to prevent expanded voting by mail during the election. This story is breaking and will be updated. 2177

Vice President Mike Pence and the second lady, Karen Pence were among the first Americans to receive an initial dose of Pfizer's COVID-19 vaccine on Friday, and did so in a live on-camera event at the White House. Surgeon General Jerome Adams also received the COVID-19 vaccine during Friday's event.Prior to injections, doctors asked the trio a series of questions regarding COVID-19 symptoms, allergy history and histories of blood disorders. After the three answered "no" to all questions, healthcare professionals from Walter Reed Medical Center administered the vaccine."I didn't feel a thing. Well done," Pence said.In remarks following his injection, Pence said he decided to take the vaccine in a public event to improve public confidence."While we cut red tape, we did not cut corners," Pence said.Pence also added that thanks to vaccines, the U.S. was now "turning the corner" on the pandemic and that the country could now see the "light at the end of the tunnel."The shot the Pences received Friday is the first of a two-shot vaccination. They'll need to take a booster shot in a few weeks in order to complete the inoculation process.President-elect Joe Biden has also said he would receive the vaccine "sooner rather than later," adding that he didn't want to "get ahead of the line, but I want to make sure we demonstrate to the American people that it is safe to take."Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation's top expert on infectious diseases, has recommended that President Donald Trump also get the vaccine. "You still want to protect people who are, you know, very important to our country right now," Fauci said Tuesday on ABC. "Even though the President himself was infected and he has likely antibodies that likely would be protective, we're not sure how long that protection lasts." Former Presidents Barack Obama, George W. Bush and Bill Clinton have all separately agreed to take the COVID-19 vaccine on camera in an effort to build public trust in the process. Pence is among the first Americans to receive the vaccine. Pfizer's COVID-19 vaccine was cleared for Emergency Use Authorization last Friday and formally recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention last weekend. Healthcare workers in several states began receiving the vaccine on Monday.A vaccine made by Moderna received a key recommendation by an FDA panel on Thursday, and the agency is expected to grant full approval in the coming days. On Friday, Pence said he "expects" that Moderna vaccine would be approved at some point Friday. The Moderna vaccine could be distributed as soon as early next week. 2611

TUCSON, Ariz. — With hospitals at capacity due to a surge in COVID-19 cases, an Arizona woman says her mother had to wait 13 hours in bed in a hallway while waiting for a room to open up.Sam Bero said her mother went to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Tempe last week after delaying care for an infection earlier this year.Bero said her mother's illness went from infection to kidney stones, and eventually turned into a larger medical issue.“It just ended up turning into a bigger problem than it should've been,” she said. The Center for Disease Control released a report in June that estimated that 41% of U.S. adults had avoided medical care because of COVID-19 concerns — included 12% who reported having avoided urgent or emergency care.Bero said her mother got to the hospital at 1 p.m. and wasn't given a room until 2:45 a.m.“They were triaging patients in the waiting room, so doing all the blood pressure, IVs and all in the waiting room,” Bero said. “And then, when she finally did get a bed, she was in a bed in the hallway for 13 hours.”On Tuesday, the Arizona Department of Health Services (ADHS) reported that there are 192 ICU beds available across Arizona and 1,093 inpatient beds available. ADHS is reported the highest number of inpatient COVID-19 patients in this new surge, with 2,084 people in their hospital metrics.COVID-19 patients in ICUs also are climbing with 474 people hospitalized — a similar number we saw right before a surge in cases this summer.Hospital leaders across Arizona say that the number of available beds can change throughout the day as the number of patients goes can change.A spokesperson for Carondelet Health Network — the company that operates St. Joseph's — said that while their hospitals continue to have the capacity to treat patients needing medical care, “like any hospital, the number of patients in-house can fluctuate daily.”Hospitals across Arizona are working to secure more staffing, as there is expected to be an increase in hospitalizations from COVID-19 in the coming weeks.“We commend our team of health care professionals who are working valiantly to ensure our preparedness as we continue caring for our community,” the Carondelet spokesperson said.Bero said her mother has since been released from the hospital, and she’s expected to be okay.“The poor nurses and doctors are so overworked,” she said. This story was originally published by Nicole Grigg on KNXV in Phoenix. 2441

U.S. government officials are putting an early end to a study testing an Eli Lilly antibody drug for people hospitalized with COVID-19 because it doesn’t seem to be helping them.Independent monitors had paused enrollment in the study two weeks ago because of a possible safety issue. But on Monday, the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, which sponsors the study, said a closer look did not verify a safety problem but found a low chance that the drug would prove helpful for hospitalized patients. It is a setback for one of the most promising treatment approaches for COVID-19. President Donald Trump received a similar experimental, two-antibody drug from Regeneron Pharmaceuticals Inc. on an emergency basis when he was sickened with the coronavirus earlier this month. In a statement Lilly notes that the government is continuing a separate study testing the antibody drug in mild to moderately ill patients, to try to prevent hospitalization and severe illness. The company also is continuing its own studies testing the drug, which is being developed with the Canadian company AbCellera.Antibodies are proteins the body makes when an infection occurs; they attach to a virus and help it be eliminated. The experimental drugs are concentrated versions of one or two specific antibodies that worked best against the coronavirus in lab and animal tests.Lilly and Regeneron have asked the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to grant emergency use authorization for their drugs for COVID-19 while late-stage studies continue. Lilly says its request is based on other results suggesting the drug helps patients who are not hospitalized, and that it will continue to seek the FDA’s permission for emergency use.___The Associated Press Health and Science Department receives support from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute’s Department of Science Education. Tumblr, a popular blog service owned and operated by Yahoo, says it will ban "adult content" from its site on Dec. 17.The decision comes just weeks after the Tumblr app was temporarily removed from Apple's App Store after child pornography was found on the site. Tumblr said in a statement to The Verge that the decision to ban adult content did not stem from that incident.Tumblr's new policy bans "explicit sexual content" and most instances of nudity. The site added that nudity "found in art," as well as nudity in the context of health-related situations and in the context of political protest or newsworthy events would still be permitted.Tumblr also says that written erotica will still be permitted on the site. After Dec. 17, any explicit content flagged by algorithms will be hidden from public view but not deleted from the site. Users can appeal Tumblr's decision if they feel it was made in error. 953
