Health authorities are closely watching an outbreak of respiratory illness caused by a new virus that originated in China. Governments are stepping up surveillance of airline passengers from central China and taking other steps to try to control the outbreak. Here’s what you should know about the illness:WHAT IS THE NEW VIRUS?Scientists have identified it as a new coronavirus. The name comes from the Latin word for crowns or halos, which coronaviruses resemble under a microscope. The coronavirus family has many types that affect people. Some cause the common cold while others originating in bats, camels and other animals have evolved into more severe illnesses such as SARS — severe acute respiratory syndrome — or MERS — Middle East respiratory syndrome.WHERE DID IT COME FROM?The first cases appeared last month in Wuhan, a city in central China’s Hubei province. Many of the first people infected had visited or worked at the Huanan Seafood Wholesale Market in Wuhan, which has since been closed for an investigation. Chinese health officials say they believe the illness first spread from animals to people. They now say it can spread between people.HOW WIDESPREAD IS IT?China has identified 440 cases and nine deaths, most of the illnesses and all of the deaths in Hubei province. Cases have also been confirmed in Thailand, South Korea, Japan, the U.S. and Taiwan. The outbreak coincides with China’s busiest travel season as people visit their families or go abroad for the Lunar New Year holiday. That travel rush is expected to spread the disease more widely.WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS?Common symptoms include a runny nose, headache, cough and fever. Shortness of breath, chills and body aches are associated with more dangerous kinds of coronavirus, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In serious cases, the virus can cause pneumonia.HOW IS IT TREATED?There is a test to identify the virus, but no vaccine to prevent an infection. Patients with the virus have been isolated in hospitals or homes to prevent spreading it. The symptoms are treated with pain and fever medication, and people are advised to drink plenty of liquids and rest while they recover.HOW IS IT SPREADING?Many coronaviruses can spread through coughing or sneezing, or by touching an infected person. Scientists believe the new virus can spread from person to person in close contact through the respiratory tract. COULD IT BE AS BAD AS SARS?So far, the virus appears less dangerous and infectious than SARS, which also started in China in 2002-03 and killed about 800 people. However, viruses can mutate into more dangerous and contagious forms, and it’s too early to say what will happen with this one.___The Associated Press Health and Science Department receives 2792

Forgetting to keep your Christmas tree watered could have deadly consequences, according to the National Fire Protection Association. According to the NFPA, nearly 160 house fires per year are sparked by Christmas trees. These fires caused an average of three deaths, 15 injuries, and million in direct property damage annually, the NFPA said. A plurality of Christmas tree fires from 2013 through 2017, roughly 44 percent, were caused by electrical distribution or lighting within the tree. Another 25 percent of Christmas tree fires were from a heat source, such as a candle, being too close to a tree. The NFPA also found that 21 percent of Christmas tree fires were intentionally set. In 2017, the National Institute of Science and Technology released a video showing the fire danger a tree not watered can pose. The video showed that a spark to a dry tree could ignite an entire tree within several seconds, engulfing an entire room seconds later. A watered tree failed to ignite in the same fashion. Although buying an artificial tree likely decreases the risk of a fire, for every three fires sparked by a real Christmas tree, one is caused by an artificial tree. The National Fire Protection Association released Christmas tree fire prevention tips:· Choose a tree with fresh, green needles that do not fall off when touched.· Before placing the tree in the stand, cut 2” from the base of the trunk.· Make sure the tree is at least three feet away from any heat source, like fireplaces, radiators, candles, heat vents or lights.· Make sure the tree is not blocking an exit.· Add water to the tree stand. Be sure to add water daily.· Use lights that have the label of a recognized testing laboratory. Some lights are only for indoor or outdoor use.· Replace any string of lights with worn or broken cords or loose bulb connections. Read manufacturer’s instructions for number of light strands to connect.· Never use lit candles to decorate the tree.· Always turn off Christmas tree lights before leaving home or going to bed. 2047

Glendale, Ariz. — Could fake ride-share drivers get their hands on your personal information? It's a real concern for one Arizona woman, who says she and her husband were approached by an impostor Tuesday night after ordering a Lyft to head home when she was approached by a different car than described on the app.“He said, 'Oh, are you looking for — ?' and he mentioned the Lyft driver's actual name," Theresa Greenwood said. “We said, 'yeah we are waiting for her, but she’s meant to be in a black Honda Civic.' But he said, 'no, I’m your Lyft.' ”The driver then looked down and even told the couple where he was told to pick them up and where they were heading. "It just seemed not quite right," Greenwood said. After noticing the car didn't have a Lyft decal on the outside, the couple refused to get in, and the driver left. Moments later, their real Lyft driver showed up. “We started checking bank accounts cause we were like clearly something's been hacked, we just didn’t know what had been hacked,” she said. The couple reported the incident to Lyft and Glendale police, but still don't know how the impostor knew their ride information, or what his intentions were. KNXV reached out to the ride-share company for comment, and while they're still just as puzzled by the information they did say: “At Lyft, safety is fundamental. The behavior described is deeply concerning, and our dedicated Trust and Safety team will continue to investigate this particular incident. We provide license plate numbers in the app for riders to match with the vehicle, which is the easiest and most effective way to identify your ride. We also provide photos of the driver and vehicle, and details on the vehicle’s make, model, and color.” 1742
