RAMONA, Calif. (KGTV) - A Ramona couple walking their yellow Labrador puppy say they were attacked by two pit bulls Tuesday night, suffering serious injuries.Michael Dougherty was walking with his wife, Dee, in the Kmart parking lot in the 1800 block of Main Street training their puppy, Rueger. Dougherty said it's easier in the parking lot, as there is more light, compared to their rural neighborhood. As they walked toward the Taco Shop, around 7:15 p.m., Dougherty said from the corner of his eye, he saw two pit bulls charging.RELATED: Dog and owner mauled by pit bull during walk in OceansideThey attacked Rueger and his wife, who went down trying to rescue the dog. Dougherty is recovering from a back injury and walks with a cane. He used it as a weapon."I just started beating the dog, beating the dog, until it [the cane] snapped. This fell down alongside the dog and my wife and she grabbed this and was jamming it into the dog's mouth. When this broke I started punching the dog in the head."Eventually they were able to separate all three dogs. No one escaped uninjured. Dougherty described his wife's wounds, "the top fang went in," gesturing at his left cheek, "and the bottom fang went under her chin like this."RELATED: Pit bull comes to defense of injured owner in apartment, chases away attackers"Both arms are bitten up quite a bit, I couldn't even count them there were so many," he continued, saying her hand bore the worst injury. "Her thumb was bitten three quarters of the way around," saying the skin had been pushed up, away from her hand. "She said she could see the bone, but I don't know about that."Dougherty suffered a bite to his hand as well.As he called 911, he saw the owner and the two pit bulls walking away."It's frustrating to think that he didn't have the courage to stand here and be responsible for what his animals did."RELATED: Family trying to save 'sweetest pit bull on earth' after authorities recommended it be euthanizedDougherty said they don't know how much his wife's emergency room trip will cost. They have a 0 veterinarian bill and said his wife is anxious when he leaves the house.Dougherty hoped by telling their story he would "make people aware and maybe get some information to get this wild animal off the street. He was plain vicious."Animal Control confirmed they have a dog in quarantine, and will have the couple identify Friday whether it's the same dog who attacked them.Dougherty has a GoFundMe set up to help with his wife's expenses. Retailers and carriers are preparing for an online holiday shopping surge that could tax shipping networks and lead to delivery delays.FedEx and UPS are ramping up their holiday hiring while expanding their weekend operations and asking retailers to use their shipping network when there is more slack. And stores are pushing shoppers to buy early and are expanding services like curbside pickup to minimize the need for delivery. For the last few years, many retailers had been using their own physical stores, in addition to their distribution centers, to fulfill online orders. But now they are designating some of those stores to handle even higher volumes. Best Buy, for example, converted space in 250 of its 1,000 stores this fall to manage online orders. The moves come as most of the carriers have been at full shipping capacity for months as shoppers shifted their buying online during the pandemic.“We are warmed up for what we’re calling the ship-a-thon,” said Brie Carere, chief marketing and communications officer at FedEx. “Like everything else in 2

PRINCETON, N.J. — Princeton University has announced plans to remove the name of former President Woodrow Wilson from its public policy school because of his segregationist views, reversing a decision the Ivy League school made four years ago to retain the name.University president Christopher Eisgruber said in a letter to the school community Saturday that the board of trustees had concluded that “Wilson’s racist views and policies make him an inappropriate namesake” for Princeton’s School of Public and International Affairs and the residential college.Eisgruber said the trustees reversed their April 2016 decision in light of the recent killings of George Floyd and others. Floyd's death sparked weeklong protests against systemic racism and police brutality. 776

President Donald Trump's lawyer, Rudy Giuliani, said Monday that he's not sure collusion with Russia would be considered a crime. But legal experts have repeatedly said that anyone found collaborating with Russia on the 2016 election could be charged with other crimes, such as conspiracy -- and special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation is ongoing.Asked about former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort's upcoming trial, Giuliani told CNN "New Day" co-anchor Alisyn Camerota that Manafort "was not involved with intimate business relationships with Donald Trump.""Four months, they're not going to be colluding with Russia, which I don't even know if that's a crime, colluding about Russians," Giuliani, a former federal prosecutor, continued. "You start analyzing the crime -- the hacking is the crime. ... The President didn't hack." 850

Protecting yourself from sickness has become a top priority for many people right now.Whether you're trying to steer clear of the novel coronavirus or germs in general, there are a few simple things families can do to keep their immunity in top form."First, it's important to remember that nothing you do is 100% guaranteed in preventing you from getting sick, but there are certain lifestyle changes you can make that can actually help your immune system react better when there are pathogenic invaders that would cause diseases," said SaVanna Shoemaker, a registered dietician with Healthline.Shoemaker and other experts overwhelmingly say getting enough sleep is number one."Making sure that you’re getting plenty of sleep,” said Shoemaker. Sleep and immunity are so deeply linked, so just getting adequate sleep can help you from getting sick as often.""When you have a disruptive sleep cycle and you're not getting good, adequate, restorative sleep, then our immune system takes a hit for that," said Joe Weydert, the Chair of Integrative Medicine at the American Academy of Pediatrics. She says younger children need nine to 11 hours of sleep, while teenagers could use eight to 10 hours. Also, watch out for stress. Consistent, high levels of stress can weaken your immune system."In these goofy times that we’re living in right now, we’re all experiencing high levels of stress. Kids may not say 'Oh mom, I’m stressed,' but they may manifest it by being more irritable or not sleeping well," said Weydert.Getting outside or prioritizing time to relax can help.Another major factor in keeping our immunity strong is our diet – eating rich, whole foods that are not processed. Probiotics can also help.As for supplements, "the thing you need to consider with supplements is there’s no guarantee. Now there are some supplements that some studies show may boost your immunity, but so far there’s no research in any supplement that shows it can prevent COVID-19," said Shoemaker.Vitamin D has a direct impact on our immune system, preferably straight from the sun. Elderberry is a supplement that's strongly recommended by many doctors for families, as it acts as a barrier to viruses."Other nutrients which I think are important are vitamin C and zinc. Those work together to help make what we call tight junctions in the epithelial cells. So, our epithelial cells need to be tight together so germs can't get through and vitamin C and zinc help maintain that tight junction with things," said Weydert. While supplements are certainly beneficial, experts advise getting the vitamins naturally through food. These tools are helpful in keeping your immune system at its best and a great addition to other safety measures like wearing a mask, washing your hands and social distancing as many do their best to avoid COVID-19. 2830
