It was America's retailer, long before Amazon. But now Sears is filing Chapter 11 bankruptcy and closing another 140 stores — in addition to well over 1,000 stores the past five years. While the company will remain in business, longtime customers are a bit nervous, wondering about warranties for all those appliances they bought, as well as Shop Your Way reward points and gift cards.Sears shoppers like Cleo Pennington have a lot of questions about the bankruptcy."I'm very sad. Very, very sad," she said.So we checked the fine print in the Sears announcement to get answers.Q: Are all stores closing? A: Sears says no, and insists it plans to emerge from bankruptcy a stronger, leaner company.Q: What if you have a gift card? A: They are still valid, but any time a store files for bankruptcy, you may want to use them as soon as possible, just to be safe.Q: What about Shop Your Way rewards?  A: They are still valid at remaining Sears and Kmart stores.Q: Will appliance warranties be honored? A: Sears says it will honor them as long as it remains in business. That includes extended protection plans and full home warranties. However, Business Insider says if the chain decides to liquidate next year, then warranties could become worthless.Q: Where can you still find Kenmore appliances?A: In remaining Sears stores, at Sears.com, and on Amazon. More than just an appliance storeBut Sears wasn't just where moms and dads shopped. Tens of millions of children looked forward every Christmas to The Wish Book, filled with dozens and dozens of toys.Cheryl Ayers remembers it well, "It was a big deal when that catalog would come in the mail every Christmas and we would go through it with a pen and circle what we wanted Santa to bring," she said.Back in the 1920s and 1930s, Sears even sold houses, which today are still dotting neighborhoods across the country. But the houses went away after World War II, while Amazon, Target, and Walmart took the toy business, and Best Buy, Home Depot, and Lowe's took the appliance business.Sears will continue to sell Kenmore appliances in remaining stores and online, but Cheryl Ayers says it's not the same."This is the end of a dynasty and it's sad," she said.Sears will still have 600 stores remaining, and a website. But with big-name brands like Whirlpool pulling out, no one is sure how much longer remaining stores can survive. Business Insider worries some prospective customers may now be afraid to purchase a major Sears appliance, wondering about the future.________________"Don't Waste Your Money" is a registered trademark of Scripps Media, Inc. It took Baton Rouge Police Officer Blane Salamoni less than 90 seconds to shoot Alton Sterling, but police took nearly two years to fire him and release footage from his body camera.Salamoni's firing on Friday was the latest chapter in a tumultuous week for the Sterling family. State officials decided not to file criminal charges against the officers involved in the shooting, saying their actions were justified. Days later, police said the officers violated use-of-force policies.A second officer, Howie Lake II, was suspended for three days without pay for losing his temper during the incident. 608

IONIA, Mich. (WXMI) — An 11-year-old girl in Ionia is spreading Christmas cheer and collecting gifts to give to children with long-term hospital stays.Over the past week, hundreds of boxes have been stacking up in 11 year-old Mchalie Walter’s garage.“The first time we got a ton of packages it made me really happy,” Mchalie said.Mchalie is overjoyed and she won’t even be the one opening the presents.RELATED: East County family's Santa treehouse helps families in needMchalie is collecting them for kids at Mott Children’s Hospital in Ann Arbor. She came up with the idea and had her mom reach out for donations on Facebook.“I was really surprised because she said this had been on her mind for some time but she doesn’t talk a lot about her time in the hospital, I was really proud of her,” Mchalie’s Mother Royale Walter said. The gifts are going to kids in the same hospital where Mchalie got treatment for cancer.RELATED: El Cajon students go bald in support of classmate teased after chemo“I remember being in the hospital on holidays and it was hard being away from my family so I just thought give a little joy to the kids that are in the hospital while they are there,” Mchalie explained. She’s planning on handing them out at her next appointment later this month.“I just really hope they are happy and I really hope they remember this because when we were in the hotels and hospitals, I remember getting a gift and having fun playing with it and that’s what I want the kids to remember,” Mchalie added. The family has collected more than 220 toys and presents as of Friday. They will keep collecting until Dec. 15, if you’d like to help, click here for the Amazon Wish List where you can purchase an item and it will ship to the family for delivery. 1765

In the days and weeks following the February 14 shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, the National Rifle Association saw a significant spike in donations. In fact, reports from the Federal Election Commission show donations to the NRA's Political Victory Fund tripled from January to February. In January,?the NRA collected almost 8,000 in individual contributions. In February,?they collected more than 9,000.It's no secret that interest in guns and gun sales -- as evidenced by anecdotes and manufacturing numbers -- have until recently gotten boosts from mass shootings. So it would stand to reason that donations to the NRA would get a bump as well. 723

It's not too hard to spot massive housing projects being built around San Diego County right now.But they may not be enough to provide little relief to the rising rents and home prices around the region.A recent report from the San Diego Housing Commission said the city would need to build on average as many as 22,000 housing units per year for the next decade. But in 2017, only 10,000 units were authorized countywide."It's not so much that there is resistance to it, it's just the fact that it's hard to do," said Jeff Stevens, chair of the Mira Mesa Community Planning Group. "If you have to tear something down in order to build something else, it takes time and money."Some of the city's larger projects are in Mira Mesa - where Casa Mira View will have about 2,000 apartments when complete. And to the west at Hansen's Aggregates, a quarry that runs through Carroll Canyon, Shea and Lennar are planning to build what's called 3 Roots. The complex would have 1,800 units - including 186 single-family homes, 981 condos, and 633 apartments (180 of which will be affordable). The complex is about to go through environmental review. Still, residents are already expressing concerns over impacts like traffic."I want people to have affordable housing, that's very important. And also we want the contractors, subcontractors to have jobs, and growth is always important. But they need to think it through first before they do it," said John Svelan, a longtime Mira Mesa resident. ,Stevens said his board has reacted positively to 3 Roots, which would extend Carroll Canyon road. Another complex is being proposed over at Vulcan Materials for about 4,500 homes, but that's further away. The city of San Diego recently approved a series of development incentives, including density bonusses for micro-units near transit areas, that it hopes spurs more building. Lynn Reaser, chief economist at Point Loma Nazarene University, said it may take 15,000 new units per year just to stabilize the market. Meanwhile, Alan Gin, economist at the University of San Diego, noted that the region added 27,000 new jobs in the last year, increasing the demand for housing.    2220
