IRVINE, Calif. (KGTV) -- A new study claims that hookah could be more dangerous than other forms of smoking. According to the University of California study, one in five college students in the US and Europe have tried it. According to researchers who conducted the study, one draw from a pipe can contain as many substances as an entire cigarette. “Hookah mainstream smoke – that which is directly inhaled by the user – has many toxic and harmful chemicals, such as nicotine, which can lead to tobacco addiction; irritating carbonyl compounds; and benzine, a known carcinogen,” said lead author Veronique Perraud, a UCI assistant project scientist in the Department of Chemistry. “And due to the greater volume inhaled for every puff and the longer duration of a smoking session, the hookah oftentimes delivers a higher dose of those chemicals to the smoker.”The study also found that the hookah produces an outsized amount of carbon monoxide mainly due to the burning charcoal. According to the university, the study is the first to look at ultrafine particles. Particles researchers say pose a significant health risk. “One of the big myths about hookah usage is that the water in the bowl actually filters out the toxic chemicals, providing a shield for the smoker,” Perraud noted. “In the study, we show that this is not the case for most of the gases and that, possibly due to its cooling effect, water actually promotes ultrafine particle formation.” 1465

INDIANAPOLIS -- An abused dog that was shot and left for dead has a new lease on life after an Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department Officer and his wife, a paramedic with the Wayne Township Fire Department decided to step in and help. Officer Tim Elliott was on patrol when he came across the dog that had been shot in the face and doused in bleach. Wayne Township Fire Department Captain Mike Pruitt says Officer Elliott and his fellow officers rushed in to help and took the pup to the emergency vet to try and save him. "Still alive and wagging his tail, Tim and Tiffany couldn't let this little guy perish at the hands of a savage criminal owner," said Pruitt. Pruitt says the couple fell in love with the pup and decided to save him. The pup, who's been lovingly nicknamed "Winks,"  will need surgery to have his eye removed as well as other medical treatments from the damage his previous owner had done, The Elliott family is raising money to try to help cover those costs which are expected to exceed ,500. "Winks now has a forever home full of love and a "brother" (Gauge) to help him through this," said Captain Pruitt. Eric Holcomb is concerned about teenage homegrown violent extremists in Indiana schools, according to a Nov. 17 Indiana Department of Homeland Security report. WRTV obtained the document through two separate sources.Teenage Homegrown Violent ExtremistsThe nine-page document describes three threats to Indiana schools – active shooters, cyber threats and teenage homegrown violent extremists. Homegrown violent extremists are defined by the FBI as "global-jihad-inspired individuals who are based in the U.S., have been radicalized primarily in the U.S., and are not directly collaborating with a foreign terrorist organization."The first two threats are real concerns for police departments and schools across the state, according to multiple high-ranking law enforcement sources who are regularly briefed on local and national intelligence regarding threats. The actual threat of a teenage homegrown violent extremist attacking a school is low, the sources tell WRTV. They say listing it as one of the top three threats is not accurate. The sources spoke to WRTV on the condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to speak to the media. "The Governor of Indiana, IDHS, the FBI and the NCTC remain concerned about the potential for teenage HVE’s to conduct attacks inside the state or violence targeting a school with little to no warning," the report states. "IDHS continues to urge vigilance and to report suspicious activities to law enforcement."As the report states, Indiana did see an 18-year-old Brownsburg, Indiana man get arrested while allegedly trying to join ISIS, but there was never a threat to the high school he attended or any other schools in the country.The FBI declined to comment for this story.Questions Raised about ReportThe report was part of a briefing sent to emergency managers and police departments across the state. It quotes not only Holcomb, but other state agencies, such as the Fusion Intelligence Center, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the FBI. But some agencies never knew the report was being put together.
