IMPERIAL BEACH, Calif. (KGTV)— The San Diego Sheriff’s Department is looking for a mother of two accused of stealing thousands of dollars from her children’s school. Last week, the department’s financial crimes division issued a public warrant for 30-year-old Kaitlyn Faith Birchman for felony embezzlement.Birchman was the President of the Imperial Beach Charter School’s PTA, until she was voted off the board in March. Months before, board members said they began noticing a lack of funds.“There were thousands of dollars that hadn’t been paid,” current PTA treasurer Elizabeth McKay said. McKay told 10News, she began connecting the dots last year when vendors from previous years continued to bill the PTA saying they hadn’t gotten paid. That’s when McKay, a former Coronado Police Department Sergeant began investigating. When she contacted the bank, they told her their account no longer existed. "We were very lucky that the bank was willing to work with us to put together a paper trail,” McKay said. “The checks she had written to herself and signed herself. ATM withdrawals that weren't anywhere near Imperial beach or had anything to do with a PTA event."In March, the board confronted Birchman. They had a Sheriff’s Deputy come to the board meeting to explain exactly what “embezzlement” meant."She [Birchman] said that it was just a misunderstanding,” McKay said. “It was a lot of blind faith that they thought if she says everything is okay, then everything must be okay."At the end of the meeting, Birchman was removed from the Board.Now the Sheriff’s department is looking for the woman they said stole directly from kids, forcing the PTA to cancel students field trips and special events. “I want her to think about her own kids. She needs to at this point, make things right by taking responsibility of her actions,” McKay said. “That's the best lesson that she can teach her own children. And to make herself a better person from here."Birchman’s children no longer attend Imperial Beach Charter school. McKay said with the generous support of the community and a large donation from General Mills Box Tops, this school year, the PTA is financially stable again. (KGTV) - An altercation over a mask turned ugly at an Imperial Beach taco shop on Thursday night.Just before 10 p.m. at Don Pancho's Taco Shop, surveillance video shows a customer at the walk-up order window. He's using his shirt and sleeve to cover his face."Our cashier says he has to wear a proper face mask. The customer gets upset. The cashier offers a face mask that we have on hand for those who don't have masks. He thinks about it and gets upset," said manager Myra Espinoza.In the video, the man waves his hand, apparently waving off the mask offer, before he begins walking away. Moments later, there is a loud sound."He heard something hit the window, and the window falling and shattering down," said Espinoza.The video revealed the cause: the man took his skateboard and thrust into one of the restaurant's windows."It hurts. That's like my house. It's so disrespectful. I wouldn't go to his house and break his window," said Espinoza.Espinoza says it's not the first time someone has gotten upset over the mask policy."We have sliding windows. One gentleman grabbed the sliding windows so hard, it bounced back," said Espinoza.Still, those types of incidents are rare. Thursday's vandalism is the first time things have turned destructive."It's uncalled for and unnecessary. We're all trying to what's best and keep people safe," said Espinoza.The vandalism totaled about 0 dollars in damage. (KGTV) -- San Diego County health officials announced that the first wave of Pfizer's COVID-19 vaccines would be distributed to UCSD Medical Center and Rady Children's Hospital.While COVID-19 remains at the forefront of everyone's mind, officials also remind people not to forget about the dangers of influenza. They say both illnesses should be taken seriously to avoid overcrowding hospitals.Recently, the Imperial Beach Recreation Center has been a COVID-19 testing site. But Saturday, it transformed into the county's free flu clinic."Every year, we encourage people to get the flu vaccine," San Diego County Chief Nursing Officer Dr. Denise Foster said. "This year, it's even more important because of the pandemic."Dr. Foster says with the FDA's Emergency Authorization of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine, the county is preparing for a large-scale roll-out by early next week. The first place to get a portion of the 28,000-dose county allocation will be UCSD Medical Center and Rady Children's Hospital."Just within a few days of that, we are going to get another allocation, which includes the county and some of the local hospitals directly," Dr. Foster said.But COVID is not their only focus. In the 2019 to 2020 flu season, more than 20,000 San Diegans got the flu. Of that, 108 people died.So far this year, the numbers are drastically lower due to social distancing and masking protocols. The county hopes to keep it that way. The idea is to keep people out of hospitals, whether it's for the flu or COVID.Christine Kelly brought her granddaughter to the clinic to get a flu shot."I've had a bad flu in the past to where I thought I was not going to make it," Kelly said.With the spread of COVID, she says she did not want to take any chances."We don't want to go anywhere near the hospital," Kelly said. "We want to save it for the people that need to be there."According to the county, 84% of ICU beds are already taken as of Dec. 11.Talks of COVID-19 vaccines are still in their infancy. But with Moderna and Astra Zeneca approvals also expected in the near future, the Imperial Beach Recreation Center could once again evolve, next time, into a COVID-19 vaccine site."It's very possible," Dr. Foster said. "Centers like this and many others."Tomorrow, the county will open another free flu clinic at the Tubman-Chavez Community Center from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. 2406
