SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A severely injured horse trainer and her husband filed a lawsuit against SLR Training Center INC., the company that owns the San Luis Rey Downs Training Center in Bonsall. The nine-page complaint was filed March 18, and it focuses on the events of Dec. 7, 2017, when the Lilac Fire burned through the training facility. Martine Bellocq suffered burns to more than 60 percent of her body and lost a leg while trying to save racehorses, including her own. The court documents allege negligence on the part of the training facility. It also claims the San Luis Rey Downs facility “failed to keep a defensible space around structures.” It goes on to say “there were no fire suppression systems in place” and it “failed to have the foresight to have a means to evacuate the facility, or an emergency plan in place.” Bellocq’s attorney says her medical bills are racking up, currently in the hundreds of thousands of dollars. The attorney says the lawsuit is to recoup economic damages, resulting from injuries and the impact on her life. San Luis Rey Downs declined to give 10News a comment regarding the lawsuit. 1140

 LA JOLLA, Calif. (KGTV) -- The work of Jonas Salk helped cure polio 63 years ago, when the polio vaccine was created. The vaccine changed countless lives, changing the nation. Salk's work pushed further though, helping to create the March of Dimes. An organization that continues to work with the Salk Insitute in La Jolla - so it's researchers can one day eradicate other diseases. 10News Anchor Steve Atkinson spoke with polio survivor Dennis Nutter about his experiences with the disease as a child in the 1940s. "I was five-years-old in 1948. I just remember being extremely tired. I couldn't get up and walk," Nutter said. "Finally, I was just bedridden. The town doctor just said, 'let's just take him to the hospital and with a spinal tap they said it was polio.'"Professor Martin Hetzer is the vice president and chief science officer of the Salk Institute. "The March of Dimes is called the March of Dimes because it was literally...many, very small contributions that allowed people like Jonas Salk to pursue their science," he said. "And in his case, it led to the eradication of and the elimination of polio."The discovery saved millions of lives. "There are so many things that they, children today, don't have to endure that my generation had to," Nutter said. You could say Sindy Bregman and Allison Young are modern day golden girls. Just like Dorothy, Blanche, Rose and Sophia from the hit show The Golden Girls, Bregman and Young live together, all while experiencing life in their golden years. As of three months ago, Bregman and Young was perfect strangers. Bregman had recently lost a partner, and Young’s apartment building was being torn down.“So then I thought, well, I’ll go back to what I was doing in college when I was a young, starving actress, and thought well, I’ll get a roommate!” Young says. For Bregman, it was her first time ever pursuing a roommate. But it made perfect sense. Not only did a roommate help financially and emotionally, it also helped with safety, says Bregman. Having a roommate also provided companionship. According to AARP, one-third of Americans over the age of 45 say they're lonely. That’s why non-profits like Senior Homeshares--where the two friends found each other--are growing. "What you do is you sign up either as a home seeker or homeowner, [and] you fill out a profile,” explains Stephanie Heacox, creator of SeniorHomeshares.org. Heacox says the process is similar to filling out a dating profile. Users list their preferences, including what they’re looking for in a housemate. Bregman’s profile stated she was "neat, clean and responsible" and looking for the same to share her apartment. “The first person I pulled up was Sindy, and her introduction was just perfect for me,” recalls Young.The new friends and roommates are also fans of The Golden Girls, with Young calling herself a Blanche. “I think I’m more like a Dorothy,” replies Bregman. However, the pair says there’s another sitcom that may be even more appropriate to describe them.  SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Strong and gusty Santa Ana winds, low humidity and high temperatures will persist Friday, with a red flag warning denoting a strong risk of wildfire in effect for the San Diego County mountains and valleys.The National Weather Service issued a red flag warning that went into effect at 10 a.m. Thursday in the county mountains and valleys and lasts until 10 p.m. Friday. The NWS also issued a high wind warning for the county mountains and valleys that remains in effect until 6 p.m. Friday.Along with low humidity levels, the strong Santa Ana winds blowing north to northeast are to blame for the fire danger, with winds of 20 to 30 mph in the forecast and gusts near 55 mph possible near the top of the county mountains, according to the NWS. Humidity was expected to drop to 3-8 percent Friday.Fuels are very dry and fires will grow rapidly and be difficult to control upon ignition, according to the Santa Ana Wildfire Threat Index.Warm seasonal temperatures were also expected to add to the potential fire danger. High temperatures Friday will be 81 to 86 degrees in the western valleys, 73 to 78 near the foothills and 60 to 69 in the mountains, NWS forecasters said.With the heightened fire danger, authorities recommended that residents avoid outdoor burning and have emergency preparedness kits in order."An emergency can happen at any time," a forecaster said in a statement on the Santa Ana Wildfire Threat Index Website. "Clean debris away from your house. Charge your cell phone and make sure you have plenty of gas."Low humidity with poor overnight recovery will continue through at least the middle of next week and another round of gusty Santa Ana winds is expected Sunday and Monday, NWS forecasters said. 1754
