SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Authorities Monday publicly identified a 39-year-old firefighter killed over the weekend in a suspected DUI motorcycle crash near Lakeside.Ryan Ferrara, an engineer with the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department, was riding on the back of a westbound 2018 Harley-Davidson that crashed into a parked vehicle in the 13000 block of Piping Rock Lane about 9:30 p.m. Saturday, according to the county Medical Examiner's Office and California Highway Patrol.Ferrara died at a trauma center about an hour later, and the 36-year-old El Cajon resident who had been piloting the two-wheeler was hospitalized for treatment of severe injuries, CHP public-affairs Officer Jeff Christy said.Neither man -- the driver was not publicly identified -- was wearing a helmet at the time of the wreck, according to the Highway Patrol."Alcohol and/or drug impairment is suspected as a factor in the collision, and (it) is still under investigation with possible charges pending," Christy said.In a prepared statement, San Diego Fire Chief Colin Stowell said his and his employees' "hearts are broken by the news" of the death of Ferrara, who had been with the city emergency-services agency for 13 years. 1203

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Authorities put out a call Tuesday for any additional alleged victims of a mortuary services worker accused of looting a recently deceased Spring Valley man's home, carrying away valuables with a gurney and a body bag.Sammy Willie Gates, 49, allegedly ransacked the 60-year-old man's house late on the night of Aug. 31, about 11 hours after deputies conducting a welfare check found the resident dead of natural causes, according to sheriff's officials. On Sept. 2, one of the victim's relatives reported discovering items, including a firearm and safe, missing from the residence, Sgt. Karen Bloch said. Two days later, the family reported that reviews of surveillance camera footage had revealed that the home of the victim, whose name has not been released, had been burglarized. The video clips showed a man -- later identified by investigators as Gates, owner of independently operated Mortuary Transportation Services -- arriving at the man's house in a white utility van, the sergeant said.Gates allegedly entered the home and exited shortly thereafter with two bags filled with stolen property, then returned with a gurney and an empty body bag that he used to haul away more property. On Sept. 9, detectives from the Rancho San Diego Sheriff's Station served a search warrant at Gates' El Cajon-area home, where the deceased man's safe and gun allegedly were recovered, along with 16 additional firearms, many believed to be war relics dating back to the early 1900s."Two additional safes, multiple personal identifying documents, jewelry, watches, war medals, comic books and several thousand dollars in collectable coins were also recovered from Gates' residence," the sergeant alleged. "A gurney and body bags matching (those seen in) the surveillance video (from) the victim's residence were recovered from Gates' white utility van."Gates was jailed on suspicion of residential burglary and being a felon in possession of a firearm.Since Gates' arrest, detectives have identified five additional victims of similar crimes allegedly committed by the suspect, Bloch alleged.Anyone with information about the case is asked to call San Diego County Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477 or contact the agency online at sdcrimestoppers.org. Tipsters may remain anonymous and could be eligible for a reward of up to .000. 2346

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - An order barring the federal government from deporting recently reunited parents and children who were separated at the border due to the Trump administration's "zero tolerance" policy on illegal immigration will remain in effect until further notice, a San Diego judge overseeing the case said Wednesday.U.S. District Judge Dana Sabraw, considering a request for a temporary restraining order in a case transferred from the District of Columbia, said an order he issued three weeks ago prohibiting the government from removing reunified families from the United States before they've had a chance to discuss their immigration status is still in effect for both cases. The plaintiffs in the case of M.M.M. v. Sessions got assurances from the judge that the order halting deportations applies to both parents and their children who may be seeking asylum hearings."We're asking to maintain the status quo," an attorney on the case told the judge. In June, the American Civil Liberties Union won a nationwide injunction in its class-action lawsuit requiring reunification of children separated from their parents at the border.Last week, Sabraw ordered the federal government to come up with a plan to find parents who have been deported or released back into the United States. He said it was "unacceptable" that the government had located only a few parents out of close to 500 who have been removed from the United States or released into the mainland.Sabraw ordered the government to put one person in charge of the effort to find parents who were separated from their children. The ACLU said it needs more information from the government on the whereabouts of parents who have been removed from the United States and sent mainly to Honduras and Guatemala.A status conference on the San Diego case is set for Friday at 1 p.m. 1849

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - As it looks to shore up finances in a cash-strapped year, Father Joe's Villages Monday announced an anonymous 0,000 matching donation valid from Tuesday until midnight Thursday. The homeless services provider is looking for donations as needs continue to increase in the community during the COVID-19 pandemic. The anonymous donor will match all donations given in that above time frame up to 0,000."Seeing the San Diego community show support for our neighbors in need underlines the true impact we can have when we come together in the name of compassion and dignity," said Deacon Jim Vargas, president and CEO at Father Joe's Villages. "Donations of all amounts help Father Joe's Villages continue to make a positive difference in the lives of those we are blessed to serve. I'm extremely grateful to the staff, volunteers and supporters who make our mission a reality."According to Vargas, people are facing housing and food insecurity in San Diego County in record numbers. Millions of people, or one-third of U.S. households, are potentially facing evictions as moratoriums across the nation are set to expire.Father Joe's intends to ensure those at risk of or currently experiencing homelessness have access to a warm bed, a roof over their head, nutritious meals and critical health services.Father Joe's Villages provides housing for more than 2,100 people each night, along with health care, substance use disorder treatment, job training and therapeutic childcare. 1506
