SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A 79-year-old man was found dead about six miles from the Lake Morena Campground, one day after his family reported him missing.According to San Diego County sheriff’s officials, the man was reported missing on Tuesday, Sept. 1, after his family did not hear from him during the previous four days.Officials said the man was described as an avid hiker and was staying at the campground.On Wednesday, sheriff’s Search & Rescue teams spotted a body matching the missing hiker’s description about six miles from the campground.Officials said the county Medical Examiner’s Office will perform an autopsy to positively identify the body and determine the cause of death. 696

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A new cancer treatment is now available at the Scripps MD Anderson Cancer Center.This week 31-year-old William Apodaca became the first patient in San Diego County to receive the unique form of targeted cancer therapy. Apodaca was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer three years ago when doctors found neuroendocrine tumors in his pancreas.Neuroendocrine tumors are formed in hormone-making cells. They can grow in spots like your pancreas, stomach, and intestines. “It's a rare tumor that patients can live decades with and the hope is to improve quality of life by minimizing their need for more toxic chronic therapies,” said Dr. Marin Xavier, a Medical Oncologist at Scripps MD Anderson Cancer Center. After chemotherapy and other cancer-fighting therapies, Apodaca was finally able to try the new treatment, Lutathera, after it was FDA-approved earlier this year. Lutathera uses radioactively charged proteins to seek and attack cancer cells from the inside out. It is administered in four doses, which are given approximately every other month until they are finished. Apodaca had been traveling to Los Angeles for the treatments but was able to complete his final one in San Diego. He now has more energy and looks forward to going back to work, traveling, and getting married.“This medication is pretty much giving me a second chance at life,” said Apodaca. “Picking up the pieces of where my life was.”The drug works for two to five years, depending on how aggressive the tumors are. Patients who respond well can get retreated.Fifteen local patients have already signed up to get the new treatment and more are expected to come from other cities. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A connecting trolley line to San Diego's airport has taken another step closer to reality.Mayor Kevin Faulconer and Acting Navy Secretary Thomas Modly signed an exclusive agreement at the Pentagon Thursday to redevelop the former SPAWAR facility, now "NAVWAR," into a transit hub. SANDAG and Navy plan to collaborate on a hub similar to "Grand Central Station" adjacent to the airport, as well as a modernized complex for Navy use."This new agreement is built on San Diego's strong naval heritage," Faulconer said. "The fact that it was signed by the Acting Secretary of the Navy inside the Pentagon sends the undeniable message that there is momentum and energy in both Washington, D.C. and San Diego to do something truly special with this property. It marks a huge next step in revitalizing this area into a civic asset that serves the U.S. Navy, the community and our regional transportation network."According to SANDAG, one option being explored last year would support housing, retail, and office space. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Two San Diego area residents are among the contestants on Thursday evening's episode of the ABC miniature golf series "Holey Moley," including Avis Brown-Riley, who played in the 1988 U.S. Women's Open but missed the cut after two rounds."It was a spectacular and exhilarating experience, now I know what the movie stars experience while filming and one that I always treasure," she said of her miniature golf experience. "The Disney/ABC television production staff rolled out the red carpet and treated all the contestants like royalty. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A 16-year-old boy was hospitalized Sunday after being shot in Chollas View. According to police, the shooting happened around 3:30 a.m. at an apartment complex near the 47th Street Trolley Station. 10News spoke to the victim's mother. She said her eldest son, Ricardo Dominguez was shot in the right hip. The bullet went through the main artery but missed his organs. She said Ricardo is now sedated at the ICU -- in serious but stable condition.Witnesses told police two cars were seen speeding from the area, but no word on whether or not the vehicles were involved in the shooting.Ricardo Dominguez's mother has set up a fundraiser page.
