BEIJING, Oct. 20 (Xinhua) -- Lu Zhengcao, the last one of New China's first 57 generals, was cremated here Tuesday. Lu died of illness on Oct. 13 at the age of 106. Chinese President Hu Jintao, former president Jiang Zemin, and other senior leaders including Wu Bangguo, Wen Jiabao, Jia Qinglin, Li Changchun, He Guoqiang and Zhou Yongkang attended the cremation ceremony, which was held Tuesday morning at the hall of the Beijing Babaoshan Cemetery.     In 1955, the People's Republic of China (PRC) first adopted the military ranks and 55 senior officers were granted generals. Two more joined them in 1956 and 1958 respectively. They witnessed the development of the People's Liberation Army (PLA) and the founding of the PRC in 1949.     Born in Haicheng of northeastern Liaoning Province, Lu joined the Communist Party of China (CPC) in 1937 and fought in China's war of resistance against Japanese invasion from 1937 to 1945 and the civil war against the Kuomintang (KMT) army from 1945 to 1949. RIYADH, Jan. 10 (Xinhua) -- China and Saudi Arabia convened Sunday the fourth meeting of their joint committee on economy and trade in the Saudi capital, co-chaired by Chinese Minister of Commerce Chen Deming and Saudi Minister of Finance Ibrahim bin Abdel Aziz al-Asaf.     Chen hailed the rapid growth of bilateral economic and trade ties since the third meeting of the joint committee in 2006, noting that bilateral trade have realized two years in advance the goal of 40 billion U.S. dollars by 2010, and Saudi Arabia has been China's biggest trade partner in West Asia for eight consecutive years. BEIJING, Dec. 25 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping on Friday called for continued efforts to further study and practice the Scientific Outlook on Development.     Xi made the remarks at a meeting on further studying and practicing the Scientific Outlook on Development, which emphasizes the well-being of people and comprehensive, coordinated and sustainable development.     The CPC launched an 18-month campaign to study and implement the outlook in September last year.     The campaign had so far yielded positive results, Xi said.     The Vice President urged relevant authorities to focus on improving social harmony and stability as well as party building at grassroots levels.     They should also focus on speeding up the transformation of the country's economic development mode, and should make meticulous plans for next year's work, in order to push forward reforms and development and maintain stability, he said.

BEIJING, Dec. 16 (Xinhua) -- Top Chinese political advisor Jia Qinglin said here Wednesday that China will strengthen political mutual trust, expand substantial cooperation and promote common development with Belarus.     Jia, chairman of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) National Committee, hailed bilateral ties during a meeting with Vladimir Andreichenko, chairman of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of Belarus.     He applauded the cooperation with Belarus on politics, economy, culture and international affairs, saying the two countries supported each other on some major issues of common concerns and brought about tangible benefits for the two peoples.     Jia pledged to promote exchanges and cooperation between the CPPCC and Belarussian parliament in a bid to further bilateral ties.     Andreichenko commended China's economic growth and increasingly important role on the international arena, saying that his country and the Belarussian parliament will further cooperation with China.

TAIPEI, Nov. 9 (Xinhua) -- The Kuomintang (KMT) honorary chairman Wu Poh-hsiung Monday said the peaceful cross-Straits development was the "right path", while meeting here with Liang Baohua, secretary of Jiangsu Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC).     "Practice is sole criterion for testing truth. The development of cross-Straits ties over the past year has made me strongly feel that it is the right path to seek peaceful development," Wu said.
