ROME, July 10 (Xinhua) -- China is set to become a global leader in the implementation of environmental-friendly policies and green technologies to tackle climate change, an Italian expert told Xinhua in a recent interview.     For Stefano Pogutz, an environmental management professor at Bocconi University in Milan, China's green-policies investment plans are greater than those carried-out in the United States and in many other industrialized countries.     "What China is doing to tackle global warming is impressive considering the density of Chinese population and the rapid economic growth model China is following," Pogutz said.     Climate change is at the core of the G8 summit held in L'Aquila from Wednesday to Friday. Talks had focused on the need to forge anew post-Kyoto agreement and to increase research and investments in the green economy.     The results of the G8 summit on climate change should pave the way to the United Nations meeting in Copenhagen in December, which aims at sealing a global deal to limit greenhouse gas emissions.     According to the UN climate change framework agreement and the Kyoto protocol, China is not subject to mandatory emission cuts ofCO2.     However, on its own China is already contributing to the fight against climate change through a series of initiatives aimed at curbing carbon emissions, such as lowering internal energy consumption levels and launching traffic and transportation monitoring schemes.     "I don't agree with those who believe that China is responsible for global pollution," Pogutz said. "China is doing a lot, there's a direct public intervention on measures aimed at fighting climate change. The Chinese government has increased investments in technologies and infrastructures to boost energetic efficiency and cut CO2 emissions."     Luca Labella, a China analyst with Rome's International Studies Center (Cesi), remembered the numerous local green projects implemented in China such as Shanghai's LPG buses and the rural towns' biomass-fueled.     "China is open to climate change issues and solutions. However, in China climate change is not considered under a political perspective but a scientific one, focused on progress and research," he added.     According to Pogutz, China is set to have a role of leadership in the use of renewable energies and other green technologies.     "Today China is one of the greatest producer of solar panels and in the near future it could lead in the export of alternative energy technologies."     But it's not only a matter of strategic investments in green technologies. China's contribution to the global fight against climate change largely depends as well on its human resources. "Almost all PhD students in the U.S. come from China," he added. 

CHONGQING, June 6 (Xinhua) -- Rescuers set off a blast in the debris of a landslide Saturday in an effort to open up a shaft to reach the 27 trapped miners in southwest China's Chongqing Municipality.     Rescuers ignited explosives at 8:07 p.m. at a location calculated by experts to reach the shaft where the miners were believed to be buried.     More blasts are needed as about 1.5 million cubic meters of rock and dirt slumped 600 meters from a nearby mountain Friday afternoon, covering up the entrance to the mining pit.     Experts said ventilation, food and water could not be sent into the shaft and the air underground could only support the miners for about seven days.     Experts are still busy surveying and revising plans of future blasts.     So far, 72 people, including 21 local residents, the 27 trapped miners and 18 miners who worked on the ground, two telecom company workers and four passers-by, remained missing.     The accident happened at about 3 p.m. Friday at an iron ore mining area of Jiwei Mountain in Tiekuang Township, Wulong County, about 170 kilometers southeast of Chongqing's downtown.     Chinese vice-premier Zhang Dejiang inspected the site early Saturday morning, asking rescuers to try their best to save life while avoiding secondary disasters. Experts are called on to find out the causes of the landslide.

A main purpose of this trip is to look into grass-roots efforts to respond to public complaints.     During this trip, he paid a visit to the family of Pan Zuoliang, a role model in the complaints-receiving bureau in Liaozhong County, Shenyang. Pan died on duty of cerebral hemorrhage last May. SHIJIAZHUANG, May 12 (Xinhua) -- The brand of Sanlu Group, the dairy company embroiled in China's tainted-milk scandal, was sold at an auction Tuesday for 7.3 million yuan (1.07 million U.S. dollars), court officials said.     An unidentified individual entrepreneur from south China won the bid at an auction in the Shijiazhuang Intermediate People's Court in northern Hebei Province. No further information about the bidder was released.     The auction started at 7 million yuan and drew three bids from only two bidders.     The "Sanlu" brand was worth 14.9 billion yuan in 2006, according to the China Brand Asset Evaluation Center.     Sanlu Group, which was based in Shijiazhuang, had been China's leading seller of milk powder for 15 years until the melamine adulteration scandal broke last September. The group's revenue hit 10 billion yuan in 2007.     The company's tainted baby milk powder was found to have caused the deaths of at least six children and sickened more than 300,000others.     Beijing-based dairy producer Sanyuan bought the core assets of Sanlu, which went bankrupt in February, for 616.5 million yuan at an auction on March 4.     Also Tuesday, Sanlu sold 51-percent stakes in three dairy companies for 22.8 million yuan. The purchasers' identities were not immediately known.     But it failed to sell 51 percent stakes in another two dairy firms and withdrew 12 patent techniques from auction.     The bankruptcy trustee is to announce plans to dispose of Sanlu's last remaining assets, which include a 51-percent stake in a third dairy firm in Hebei's Baoding City
