The apparent suicide of financier and accused sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein early Saturday could lead to more accusers and witnesses stepping forward as well as a flurry of civil suits against the multimillionaire's estate, according to legal experts.Authorities believe Epstein, 66, hanged himself at New York's Metropolitan Correctional Center, a law enforcement official told CNN -- less than a day after a court unsealed documents detailing disturbing claims against him and associates. His attorney is calling for an investigation into his death."The federal criminal case will end with his death," CNN legal analyst Paul Callan said. "But on the civil side, those cases will continue. They'll now be converted into an action against the estate of Jeffrey Epstein."One such lawsuit could be filed as soon as Wednesday by a woman who alleges Epstein raped her when she was 15. That's the day that New York's Child Victims Act takes effect, giving adult survivors of child sexual abuse one year to sue an abuser for offenses in New York, no matter how long ago the abuse allegedly occurred. The Southern District of New York's investigation into Epstein's conduct is ongoing, a person familiar with the investigation said. Though Epstein was the only person charged, court papers described three unnamed employees who scheduled his alleged "massages" that escalated to sexual acts and paid victims with hundreds of dollars in cash."Today's events are disturbing, and we are deeply aware of their potential to present yet another hurdle to giving Epstein's many victims their day in Court," Manhattan US Attorney Geoffrey S. Berman said in a statement."To those brave young women who have already come forward and to the many others who have yet to do so, let me reiterate that we remain committed to standing for you, and our investigation of the conduct charged in the Indictment -- which included a conspiracy count -- remains ongoing."Former prosecutor: 'Fear factor' for victims goneEpstein was jailed since early July, when he pleaded not guilty to federal charges accusing him of sex trafficking dozens of underage girls, some as young as 14 years old.Federal prosecutors said the politically-connected financier used employees and associates to lure girls to his residences and then paid some of his victims to recruit other girls for him to abuse.Legal experts believe Epstein's death could eliminate the intimidation and bare-knuckle tactics that both accusers and witnesses told police they faced after Florida authorities opened a previous investigation against him."Epstein being no longer around, no longer alive, will make it easier for victims to come forward," said Elie Honig, a CNN legal analyst and former federal prosecutor."While he was locked up ... there still (was) a fear factor. Does he have other people who can help him? Does he hire someone to come harass me? And now that's gone."The push for charges against alleged accomplicesAttorneys for Epstein accusers on Saturday held out hope that federal prosecutors will pursue charges against associates who allegedly facilitated his crimes over the years."The reckoning of accountability begun by the voices of brave and truthful victims should not end with Jeffrey Epstein's cowardly and shameful suicide," said Sigrid McCawley, attorney for Virginia Roberts Giuffre, who has claimed that Epstein kept her as a teenage "sex slave.""We are hopeful that the government will continue to investigate and will focus on those who participated and facilitated Epstein's horrifying sex trafficking scheme that damaged so many." 3611

The House of Representatives will vote Wednesday on significant gun control legislation for the first time in more than two decades, a move that Democrats hope will increase a pressure campaign for a vote in the Senate. The universal background check bill, H.R. 8, will come to the floor for a vote and is expected to pass with the Democratic majority. The legislation would require background checks on all firearm sales in the country. Currently, only licensed gun dealers have to perform background checks for anyone seeking to purchase a firearm. Most unlicensed sellers do not; H.R. 8 would make that illegal. There are exemptions to the law like "gifts to family members and transfers for hunting, target shooting, and self-defense," according to the House Judiciary Committee website. The bill, sponsored by a bipartisan duo of Reps. Mike Thompson, a California Democrat, and Peter King, a New York Republican, remains an outlier right now in the House since it has bipartisan support. Most of the legislation related to gun control has been sponsored by Democrats.Four other Republicans co-sponsored the bill: Brian Mast of Florida, Brian Fitzpatrick of Pennsylvania, Chris Smith of New Jersey and Fred Upton of Michigan. King told CNN on Tuesday that he may get a few more Republican colleagues to vote for the measure, but "no more than a handful."At a 25-year anniversary party for the gun control group the Brady Campaign on Tuesday evening, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi expressed confidence that the universal background checks bill would pass the House of Representatives. At the event, Pelosi also recalled her her efforts with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer in the 1990s on gun control as "hard," but a "triumph that saved millions of lives.""Tomorrow we're going to send him the background check legislation," Pelosi said to her Senate colleague with a wide smile.Schumer predicted that the country is on the "precipice of great change" on the issue of gun safety."We have a Democratic House that will not flinch. We have a Senate Democratic minority that will not flinch. Most of all, we have a public who is aroused and strong."Democrats, including Pelosi, have made this a top policy priority in the new Congress, staging public hearings on the topic which had not been held for years in Congress. The legislation also has the backing of a multitude of outside groups, including the former congresswoman and gun control advocate Gabby Giffords, the Brady Campaign, Everytown for Gun Safety and Moms Demand Action.Once it passes the House, the bill will move to the Senate, where it is unlikely to pass in the Republican-majority chamber when legislation often needs 60 or more votes to advance. On Tuesday, King urged his Senate colleagues to consider the bill."I would think that they should let it come to a vote," he said, adding that the average American supports the universal background checks bill."This is not going to affect more than probably less than 1% of the American people and the ones it will affect either suffer from mental illness or are criminals. So to me, it's a phony issue being raised by some of the gun groups," he said.King understands that public opinion is on his side on this issue. 3247

The moon is slowly shrinking over time, which is causing wrinkles in its crust and moonquakes, according to photos captured by NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter.Unlike Earth, the moon doesn't have tectonic plates. Instead, as the moon's interior has cooled over the last several hundred million years, it has caused the surface to wrinkle as it shrinks. Unlike the flexible skin of a grape when it shrinks into a raisin, the moon's brittle crust breaks. This creates stair-step cliffs called thrust faults as part of the crust is pushed up and over another close part of the crust. There are now thousands of cliffs scattered across the moon's surface, averaging a few miles long and tens of yards high. The orbiter has taken photos of more than 3,500 of them since 2009. In 1972, Apollo 17 astronauts Eugene Cernan and Harrison Schmitt had to ascend one of these cliffs, the Lee-Lincoln fault scarp, by zig-zagging the lunar rover over it.Today the moon is 50 meters "skinnier" because of this process. And as it shrinks, the moon actively produces moonquakes along the faults. Researchers re-analyzed seismic data they had from the moon to compare with the images gathered by the orbiter.Data from the seismometers placed on the moon during the Apollo 11, 12, 14, 15 and 16 missions revealed 28 moonquakes recorded between 1969 and 1977. Researchers compared the location of the epicenters for those quakes with the orbiter imagery of the faults. At least eight of the quakes occurred due to activity along the faults. This rules out the possibility of asteroid impacts or rumblings from the moon's interior. This means that the Apollo seismometers recorded the moon shrinking, the researchers said. The study of Apollo seismic data and analysis of more than 12,000 of the orbiter's photos were published Monday in the journal 1841
