BUFFALO, N.Y. — A protester who was knocked down by police in Buffalo earlier this month suffered a fractured skull and has been unable to walk, his attorney said Saturday.Kelly V. Zarcone says she was able to have a brief conversation with her client, 75-year-old Martin Gugino, before he said he needed to rest.According to Zarcone, Gugino is appreciative of those concerned about him, but he is still focused on social issues rather than himself.In a statement to CNN last Wednesday Zarcone said Gugino would be moved to a rehabilitation floor of the hospital and is expected to be released within two weeks.In an additional statement Thursday, Zarcone said Gugino is beginning physical therapy."As heartbreaking as it is, his brain is injured and he is well aware of that now," she said. BAY VILLAGE, Ohio — A priest in Bay Village says someone called police about a homeless person sleeping on a bench. It turns out it was actually a statue of Jesus.The sculpture was created by Timothy Schmalz, and depicts Jesus wrapped in a blanket and lying on a bench.Within 20 minutes of the sculpture's installation at St. Barnabas Episcopal Church, police were called, according to the church's pastor, Alex Martin. He tweeted that an officer told him someone had called to report a homeless person sleeping on a park bench.Scripps station WEWS in Cleveland reached out to Bay Village police, who have not yet responded to a request for more information.According to the church's website, because Bay Village isn't impacted much by poverty, the statue is meant to remind residents how serious homelessness is in the world.The temporary installment will be on display until Dec. 1.The church is currently raising money to try and help the homeless. BANGOR, Me. — It’s the time of year to bundle up, pick out a tree, and make time for tradition.Despite everything this year has brought, there are moments worth celebrating, and in some places, life almost seems normal.“Everything has been canceled or changed, or you can't do this, you can't do this that, and the nice thing about our trees here is they're planted at 6 feet apart, coincidentally,” said Mac McCullen, owner of the Piper Mountain Christmas Tree Farm.The Piper Mountain Christmas Tree Farm didn’t plan for a pandemic, but they’re hoping families can find a small escape when they visit.“People could spread out, find their trees, stay safe and enjoy that kind of time together with their family, which is so important, I think, and particularly in a time like this,” McCullen said.After retiring from the Navy, McCullen and his wife took over the farm. “Our favorite part of being on the farm is, quite honestly, just being outside," he said.It’s a joy the McCullens were terrified of losing because of Covid-19.“We weren't sure that people were gonna show up. We were very pleased our first weekend to have probably better than normal weekend. And it's kind of continued to be that way. Even our weekdays, which are typically pretty slow, two or three people here and there, have been fairly steady,” said McCullen.They did everything they could to make their farm safe: putting up sneeze guards and using social distancing in their store.The couple was thankful to see the cars fill their parking lot.“This is one of the best things we come to do, to stay together,” said long-time customer Mike Cassidy.“I haven’t been to get a tree anywhere else since I’ve been born,” said Cassidy’s daughter, Mariah.These simple moments of family fun are making sure the McCullen’s legacy can live on.“It's a huge relief because not only do we have to deal with COVID, but we're a seasonal business. People don't buy Christmas trees year-round, so all of our sales happen in the month of November and December. So, if people didn't show up, oh my gosh, you know, we really would have a hard time surviving," McCullen said.It’s not just at this farm, demand for Christmas trees is skyrocketing across the country, so much so, that some farms are seeing shortages.With that jump in demand, comes a jump in price. The National Christmas Tree Association reported Americans will pay an average of 7 percent more for a tree this year than last year, and 23 percent more than they paid in 2018.But raising prices wasn’t an option at this farm.“With all the difficulties that everybody has gone through and the stress and the strain that is put on everyone, we just didn't want to add another layer to that. So, what we tried to do was stay as consistent as we could to keep our prices the same so that people could come out and know what to expect when they get here,” said McCullen.McCullen and his wife made many of the wreaths themselves. They also made candle holders from fresh fir trees and garland for your home.“I get a little emotional about it because it's just us. For my wife and I, we don't have children, so our workers the people that are here with us that support us are our family. That's what the emotional piece of it just being able to be, you know, in something together and to be able to create, you know, things that we know people enjoy,” said McCullen.For those close enough to visit, taking home a Piper Mountain tree is a tradition they won’t miss.“We love a real Christmas tree,” said Mariah Cassidy. “There’s nothing like it, and coming here always feels like home.”“And this year would be in memory of my mom, Gaila,” said Matthew Cassidy. “She used to love to come here, and she’s the main reason we keep coming here. Body camera video released Friday shows YouTube shooter Nasim Aghdam telling Mountain View Police she had no plans for violence hours before she opened fire at the company's San Bruno headquarters.The police recording shows officers identify Aghdam’s car in a Walmart parking lot in Mountain View at about 1:30 a.m. PT on April 3. Less than 12 hours later, Aghdam would open fire in a courtyard at the YouTube campus, injuring three people before turning the gun on herself. Mountain View Police said the license plate showed Aghdam's vehicle was linked to a San Diego missing persons report filed by her family. The Mountain View Police Department (MVPD) said seven record systems were checked during this time, including the Armed and Prohibited Persons System (APPS). The APPS cross-references records of persons who lawfully purchased weapons with the records of those who are prohibited from owning them. The systems checks for Aghdam came back negative, police said.Two officers knocked on the window and woke up Aghdam, who had been sleeping in the back seat. During their conversation, officers asked Aghdam if she knew her family in San Diego had reported her missing.“We didn’t get along together so I left them,” Aghdam said. She explained that she didn’t get along with her father and drove straight to Mountain View from San Diego. Aghdam also said she went to Northern California to start fresh in a place without memories.Officers asked Aghdam if she was taking medication or needed to take medication. She shook her head, “no."During questioning, Aghdam also told officers that she didn’t want to hurt herself or anyone else, and had no plans to commit suicide.Shortly after the police body camera recording ended, one of the officers called Aghdam’s family in San Diego to report that she had been found. Her father, Ismail Aghdam, answered the phone and confirmed that he had not been getting along with his daughter, police said. He thanked officers for the call and hung up.One hour later, the father called Mountain View Police to let them know his daughter had recently become upset about changes on the YouTube platform that had impacted videos she had created on living a vegan lifestyle, police said. They said that they tried to warn authorities before the shooting.The family said she felt she reached the most people through her YouTube page but her relationship with the company turned ugly when YouTube changed its filters and she began to lose followers and viewers."I Googled 'Mountain View' and it was close to YouTube headquarters, and she had a problem with YouTube," her brother said.
