SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - County health officials are encouraging local women to get vaccinated for "whooping cough" amid a possible epidemic.The county says pertussis, commonly known as "whooping cough," could turn into a possible local epidemic based on historical patterns."It’s critical for pregnant women and people who come into close contact with young infants to get vaccinated," Wilma Wooten, County public health officer, said. "Newborns are very susceptible to whooping cough because they are too young to be fully vaccinated. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Bagging vegetables, opening boxes, organizing volunteers.Every month the parking lot at Unity Church in City Heights becomes a mini grocery store."Without this service a lot of people wouldn't even have a plate on the table to be able to say I had my meal today," said Chanae Jackson.Jackson started this food distribution several years back, partnering with Feeding San Diego to make it possible.She also found others who wanted to give back, including her friend Dede Jackson."You have hungry babies at home these places help they help they help feed your family," Jackson explained.Both women know how appreciated the groceries are because in addition to volunteering, they also take home food.They tell ABC 10News there's always been people lining up, but since COVID-19 hit, those lines have grown. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Consumer prices rose by nearly four percent in San Diego over the last year largely due to an increase in the cost of gasoline, according to a new report by the U.S. Department of Labor. According to the report, prices in the San Diego area rose 3.8 percent over the last 12 months and 1 percent over the last two months. The largest increases stem from household furnishings and operations and housing, which rose by 9.3 and 5.2 percent over the last year. The report points out that an increase in prices for food and energy over the last two months was fueled by higher gas prices. The energy index jumped 11.4 percent over the last two months mainly due to higher gas prices, according to the report. Over the last year, food from home increased by more than 2 percent while food away from home actually decreased by 0.4 percent. California's gas tax will jump by another 5.6 cents per gallon on July 1, 2019. Although the report may seem discouraging, the cost increases were at least partially offset by a 1.1 percent price decline in education and communication. The report shows that items like cereal and baked goods were up by nearly 2 percent from May of 2018 to March of 2019. Apparel was up by more than 6 percent from May of 2018 to March of 2019. Milk and dairy products also rose by 2 percent in the same time period. Consumer prices increased in a similar way in neighboring Los Angeles. Over the last year, prices in Los Angeles rose by more than three percent, but May only saw prices rise by 0.2 percent. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Construction began Friday on SeaWorld's next big attraction for the park, billed as California's tallest, fastest, and longest dive coaster.The first phase on the dive coaster started in conjunction with National Roller Coaster Day, as crews prepared the coaster site for the ride's foundation and utilities. The coaster will be located adjacent to the park's Journey to Atlantis attraction in the southeast corner of the park.SeaWorld previously said the ride would be called "Mako," after the endangered species of shark. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- California Highway Patrol is investigating after a man was shot while driving on Interstate 8 Saturday night. According to CHP, the shooting happened on I-8 near Waring Road around 8:30 p.m. CHP says an unknown vehicle began firing rounds at the victim. According to CHP, the suspect fled the scene in an unknown vehicle and has yet to be located. The victim was taken to the hospital and is expected to recover.
