PRAIRIE VILLAGE, Kan. — Officials in Prairie Village say a garbage truck crashed into a house in Prairie Village Wednesday morning. Police said the driver fell out of the truck after turning onto Cedar Street from 83rd Terrace. The truck continued to roll and smashed into the corner of a home's garage.The homeowners were home at the time but were uninjured. A spokeswoman at Overland Park Regional Medical Center said the trash truck driver remains in critical condition."I opened the front door and the truck was barreling across my grass and all the sudden it hit and we shook,” said the homeowner, Rick Evrard.Michael Yates was remodeling a kitchen at a home across the street when he heard the crash.“All the sudden I heard the boom,” said Yates, “That’s when I looked out the window and I saw the truck was inside the house over there and the fellow was laying on the ground.”The man lying on the ground was the driver. Yates and Evrard ran to him to see if they could help him.“We got towels. He was bleeding profusely from his head,” said Evrard.Evrard was told his house is uninhabitable for the time being.The truck also clipped a gas meter and the gas was shut off for repairs.  1223

President Donald Trump on Friday nixed plans for Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to travel to North Korea to hold a next round of denuclearization talks, citing insufficient progress on the issue."I have asked Secretary of State Mike Pompeo not to go to North Korea, at this time, because I feel we are not making sufficient progress with respect to the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula," Trump tweeted on Friday. On Wednesday, the Commission on Presidential Debates said it was considering changes following Tuesday’s debate which contained frequent interruptions. “The Commission on Presidential Debates sponsors televised debates for the benefit of the American electorate,” the commission said on Wednesday. “Last night’s debate made clear that additional structure should be added to the format of the remaining debates to ensure a more orderly discussion of the issues. (KGTV) - Poway's city council is expected to vote Tuesday night to move forward toward demolition of the Big Stone Lodge, which could pave the way for its consideration as a site for a long-sought affordable housing complex for veterans in the city.The property on Old Pomerado Road is one of the most historic sites in Poway, dating back to an old lodge used as a stopover on the stagecoach route into San Diego. Later, it became the location for popular restaurants, a dance hall, and a notoriously rowdy honky tonk. When the homes were built along the current Pomerado Road, residents complained of noise from the Big Stone Lodge, leading to its closure. It's been abandoned for decades and the city bought the land in 2003."It's pretty shocking as far as how dilapidated it is," Poway City Councilmember Caylin Frank told 10News. "We know that we've had vandals. We've had people breaking in to do who knows what. So at this point it's really become a health and safety risk for the city."There seems to be general agreement that the building will need to be torn down. However, there's a battle brewing over what to do with the land. In 2018, the city transferred the property to the Poway Housing Authority, which has designated it for affordable housing. Housing advocates have been trying for years to build an affordable housing complex for veterans. A plan was developed for an empty lot on Twin Peaks Road, but after an uproar by nearby residents, the council voted against the plan 3-2. Supporters of that project have pitched the Big Stone Lodge site as a replacement. Frank says Poway will need to pick sites for more housing, but wants to study multiple options, including the Big Stone Lodge.A group of Poway residents oppose putting housing at the Big Stone Lodge, citing the site's historic nature and concerns over increased traffic in the area. "Anywhere but here," said Mary Shepardson, Vice-President of the Poway Historical Society. "This is not suited for building on." Shepardson and others are urging the council to turn the land into a passive park, preserving what parts of the Big Stone Lodge can be saved, including native plants and trees.Frank says she expects the city to move forward with demolishing the structures on the site. President Donald Trump designated April 2018 "Second Chance Month" in a presidential proclamation on Friday.The proclamation states that during the month of April, the United States will emphasize the need "to provide opportunities for people with criminal records to earn an honest second chance."A bipartisan group of senators, including Democratic Sen. Dick Durbin of Illinois and Republican Sen. Rob Portman of Ohio, introduced a resolution last year to make April 2017 "Second Chance Month" to honor efforts to help those with criminal records become productive members of society. The Senate passed the resolution in April of last year. A similar resolution was introduced by Democratic Rep.
