(KGTV) - All evacuations and road closures have been lifted after a fire in Otay Mesa scorched hundreds of acres and tore through a pallet yard Thursday. The San Diego Fire-Rescue Department said in a tweet Thursday evening that crews would mop up the burn area overnight while checking for hot spots. No structures were lost in the blaze and no one injured. The fire, named the Caliente Fire, broke out about noon at Otay Mesa Road and Caliente Avenue. The San Diego Fire Department initially reported that crews stopped forward progress of the fire at around 3 p.m., but the blaze reignited moments later, eventually spreading to a pallet yard. According to fire crews, the pallet yard housed 80,000 pallets. Thick, black smoke could be seen flooding into the air from Moreno Pallets in Otay Mesa. Four helicopters, two fixed-wing aircraft, four strike teams and the original San Diego Fire first alarm team battled the blaze, according to San Diego Fire-Rescue. The Southwestern College Higher Education Center in Otay Mesa was also evacuated due to the blaze. According to a spokesperson with the college, San Diego Police entered the college and told everyone to evacuate immediately. All night classes at Southwestern were canceled. San Ysidro High School was designated as the evacuation center while the American Red Cross provided supplies. (CNN/BAY AREA NEWS GROUP) - Twenty-four hours after local news reports first shined the spotlight on the giant swastika carved in his front yard, Steven Johnson just doesn't get the commotion. But what Johnson calls a "design" sure does look like the Nazi symbol -- and it has set his East Bay neighbors on edge."That Nazi (stuff) happened like 80 years ago," Johnson said Wednesday, sitting on his Harley Davidson motorcycle in front of his home in this out-of-the-way neighborhood where a narrow road separates houses tucked together on both sides. "Get over it, I guess."That's not about to happen.Aerial footage from local news stations on Tuesday captured the cement swastika, which measures about 10 feet by 10 feet and sits adjacent to the walkway of Johnson's home, taking up half of the front yard of the modest one-story house. A day later, media and gawkers continued to show up on the street, and drone used by a photographer for a national news company hovered above the house, snapping images of Johnson's yard.The uproar over the swastika comes just as the world is commemorating the 75th anniversary of D-Day, when Allied Forces landed in Normandy, France on June 6, 1944, a battle considered one of the major turning points of World War II.Speaking to a reporter and photographers after pulling up to his home Wednesday morning, Johnson was polite — and also showed zero remorse for his Nazi stone garden."I like swastikas," he said. "I think they look cool. ... I didn't do it to get attention. I'm not a worshiper of Nazis. I just thought it'd be a cool thing to put in there."Calling the design a "Tibetan symbol," Johnson said the swastika symbolizes "peace, tranquility and harmony." (KGTV) — Border officials say 19 people were arrested after a panga boat was intercepted off the coast of Dana Point in Orange County on Friday.Crews say just before 1 a.m., U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials spotted a single-engine panga boat traveling out of Mexican waters with no lights and with multiple people on board. The boat was monitored moving north, until about 3:30 .m., when CBP officials directed San Diego units to the boat's location about 11 nautical miles west of Dana Point.Nineteen people, 18 adults males and one adult female who all claimed to be Mexican nationals, were taken into custody, CBP says. They were all turned over to Border Patrol for processing.“This interception exemplifies the unique air and sea coordination, vigilance and law enforcement capabilities of our highly skilled interdiction agents in keeping our coastal border safe,” Timothy Sutherland, with Marine Operations San Diego Air and Marine Branch, said. “The combination of expertise, technology and training were the key for the success of this operation.” 1076

(KGTV) — Attorneys who challenged the use of Sharpies to complete election ballots in Phoenix are dismissing their lawsuit, according to the Associated Press.Roopali Desai, an attorney for Arizona Secretary of State Katie Hobbs, told the AP she was notified Saturday that lawyers who filed the lawsuit are ending their case.The lawsuit stemmed from allegations that election equipment was not able to record a voter's ballot because she used a Sharpie to complete it.
