SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The journey has come to an end for hundreds of migrants seeking asylum in the U.S.A large caravan arrived in Tijuana within the last week and have waited until Sunday to cross the border into San Diego.Late Sunday afternoon, members of the caravan plan to turn themselves in to customs agents seeking asylum.Most of the roughly 400 migrants in the caravan are women and children who have been staying in shelters, seeking legal counsel before trying to cross the border.RELATED: Migrant caravan warned asylum may lead to separation from childrenBorder patrol agents released a statement Saturday saying several groups associated with the caravan have been illegally climbing a scrap metal border fence.The statement warned anyone with the caravan to “think before you act.” The Secretary of Homeland Security also said in a statement earlier this week that anyone seeking asylum “may be detained while their claims are adjudicated.”Protesters say the group is taking advantage of U.S. immigration laws. A group called San Diegans for Secure Borders plans to protest at Friendship Park.They say the migrants are unwelcome and that their claims for asylum are false. A protest was held on both sides of the border Sunday morning. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The family who lost their home in the Willow Fire is hoping to track down their "angel" firefighter."I know we lost everything, but my dad is still here. We're just so grateful," said Gwendolyn Pavlick.Two days later, an emotional Pavlick shared details of her father's narrow escape from the flames. That Wednesday night, her mother was staying with her in Carlsbad. Her father Doug was fast asleep in his home on Wind River Road in Rancho San Diego, when the fire started. It raced up a hill within minutes. Doug woke up to a loud knock."By the time he got to the door, the kitchen was on fire. The fireman said, 'You have to go.' When he ran upstairs to get keys and wallet, the fire went through the windows of his bedroom," said Pavlick.Gwendolyn says her father has dealt with back and foot issues."My dad, who couldn’t run physically, somehow, at that moment, could," said Pavlick.Doug was able to drive away to safety. From a distance, he watched as his home of 33 years burned. Six other homes were damaged from the heat and smoke."It’s heart-wrenching because that house was in our lives so long, it feels like a family member," said Pavlick.On Thursday, Gwendolyn and her parents surveyed the damage, nearly everything lost, including thousands of family photos. Outside the home, they prayed. Gwen's mother told her they will rebuild."After seeing the house, the first thing she said was, 'God gave us this house. He’s going to give it to us again,'" said Pavlick.As for their biggest blessing - her father's safety - Gwendolyn is now trying to find the mystery firefighter who woke her father."I just want to tell him, 'Thank you so much for saving my dad's life.' I don’t know if he is real or an angel," said Pavlick.The home is insured. Pavlick says very little was salvageable. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The local protester who appeared in a controversial video getting taken away in an unmarked San Diego Police van is now speaking out, as police conduct an internal investigation.“No one should feel fear from the people that are supposed to serve and protect us,” Shayla Piccini told 10News on Monday as she shared the story of her arrest from last Thursday on Park Boulevard.The video shows a protester being taken away in an unmarked van as one officer warns her family around her not to follow them or he will shoot.“You see both of her legs kind of go up in the air because she's going [into the van] head first. That’s way too much force needed for this 20-year-old lady here,” said attorney Dante Pride.“That whole ride, I was asking several questions like, ‘Who are you? Where are you taking me?’ I was getting stares and no answers,” said Piccini.Piccini said she spent the day at a protest in Downtown San Diego. After several hours, the group was walking back to their car when she saw several police motorcycles driving past them. At that moment, she held up her cardboard sign.San Diego police say detectives witnessed her step off the sidewalk and swing the sign at a passing motorcycle officer, which she denied.In the foreground of the video, you can see men in what look to be marked police vests. But the people who handcuffed and detained Piccini in an unmarked van, are in plain clothes.One man wearing military-style tactical gear can be heard in the video saying, "You follow us, you will get shot. You understand me?"Piccini's cousin Brandi Matthews said she thought he was talking to her. “When he said the words, ‘I'll shoot you,’ I automatically just dropped to my knees to demonstrate that I'm not trying to hurt anybody...I just want to know where they're taking my cousin,” she added.According to San Diego Police, the statement about shooting those attempting to follow was made by a SWAT officer who had a pepper ball device. SDPD also told 10News that his comment was a valid announcement of use of force.Police said due to the large crowd still in the area, and the detectives felt the need to leave immediately.Piccini spent the night in jail on suspicion of assault on an officer. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The former head of the Poway Unified School District appeared in court Monday for a preliminary hearing on five felony charges.Officials charged John Collins with misappropriating and misuse of public money.The complaint accuses Collins of misappropriation of public money dealing with vacation time and sick leave. Poway Unified fired Collins in 2017 after a scathing audit had alleged he received more than 0,000 in overpayments and unauthorized payments.The audit also claims there were an additional ,000 in other transactions that violated district policy and some questionable purchases for airline tickets, dinners and hotel fees.Collins attorney did not respond to 10News request for a comment, but in the past, Collins denied engaging in conduct that was dishonest.If convicted on all charges, Collins could face more than seven years behind bars. 894

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The FDA Wednesday gave emergency approval to a San Diego company's test for COVID-19 antibodies.Easy Check, from Truvian Sciences, can test for COVID-19 antibodies in under 10 minutes."They've now given us the right to market the product and sell the product as a safe and effective solution for this type of testing," said Truvian President and CEO Jeff Hawkins.The test uses a drop of blood on a testing strip. Within 10 minutes, it shows a marking on the strip that indicates if you have the antibodies or not.Hawkins said these kinds of tests are vital to the future of the coronavirus pandemic."This type of testing, today, is helping us understand how many people had an infection," said Hawkins. "Over time, this type of testing may help us understand how long that vaccine is good for and how long you are protected.He added, "Using these very deployable, simple tests to monitor this is one way we can track people over time and see how this evolves."The Easy Check test went through independent testing by four separate laboratories. They found it is 99% accurate in detecting both the presence of the COVID-19 antibody and identifying it among other antibodies.Right now, the test requires a full blood draw, but Truvian is working on a version of the test that only needs a finger prick.Hawkins said his company will sell it to medical labs and offices for per test, keeping it affordable for patients who want to take the test, although individual tests may cost more to help doctors and labs cover their costs."Our core mission as a company before COVID was to make testing more accessible and make testing less expensive," said Hawkins.
