SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - A gang member was sentenced to more than 126 years in prison Tuesday for the murder of Navy pilot James Celani at Horton Plaza in 2017."This is not living. This is hell," said Celani's cousin, Sean, who was also shot in the incident. "Mr. Morris killed my happiness and my life."Sean, who asked not to have his last name revealed, and Celani were at the Mad House Comedy Club that night. Upon leaving the club, they walked past a group of men, including Morris. Sean said he offered an innocent greeting, "What's up, brother?" At that point, Morris pulled a gun and opened fire, killing Celani and hitting Sean in the leg. Prosecutors say Morris, who has a history of violence, was angry because of a fight that evening with his girlfriend.Celani's wife spoke during a victim impact statement, describing how she and their three children have suffered since her husband's murder. She called for Morris to get the maximum sentence. SAN DIEGO (KGTV/CNS) - Opening statements were delivered Thursday in the civil trial between NFL quarterback Drew Brees and a La Jolla jeweler who allegedly sold the football pro and his wife diamonds far above their actual value.Brees took the stand to describe the close relationship he says he had with the store owner. "He always talked about it as being an investment," said Brees. "Something that you could see appreciate in value."The lawsuit, filed in San Diego Superior Court last year, accuses Vahid Moradi and his company, CJ Charles Jewelers, of selling Brees and his wife Brittany million worth of diamonds between 2012 to 2016. 653

SAN DIEGO (KGTV): Dreamers across San Diego have a week's worth of rallies, protests and programs planned on Community College Campuses.Students under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, or DACA, say it's time to come out of the shadows on campus and show their fellow students, teachers and administrators the role they play."DACA students are here, Dreamers are here, and they’re here to stay," says Miguel Mellado, a DACA student at Southwestern College."We have to really stand up and say we’re here, we’re proud, we’re working hard, and we deserve more," he says.Mellado's parents brought him to America when he was eight years old. He didn't learn he was undocumented until middle school. He says it left him feeling isolated.His desire to find community, and help others do the same, is what led him to help organize this week's "Undocumented Students Week of Action."Events begin Monday at City College, Mesa College, Miramar College and Southwestern College. The San Diego Community College District has already announced their support of the programs.An estimated 1,000 undocumented students are enrolled at those colleges."DACA recipients are some of our hardest working and brightest students, and it is our duty to advocate on their behalf," said San Diego Mesa College President Pamela Luster."Clearly, these deserving students who came to the U.S. as children, who have not been convicted of any crimes and who are earnestly seeking an education to improve their lives, are tremendous assets to our community."But that support has upset some people in San Diego who feel DACA students take opportunities and resources away from other students.Raul Rodriguez, Jr., the California Coordinator for America First Latinos, told 10News that taxpayer-funded schools shouldn't be supporting events like this since the students were brought into the country illegally.Meanwhile, the DACA Act is tied up in courts, after President Trump announced an end to the act in September of 2017. But with Toys R Us no longer in the picture, retailers are finding unique ways to cash in on the billion-dollar industry. Kids will always be drawn to play and make-believe. But for parents, it’s about helping Santa get the deals.“He loves to jump. He loves to run," Chedna Patin said. "So I think this will be a great play station for my baby,” she said while pointing at a piano toy.Patin said this year, she and her husband are buying their son’s holiday toys at a big box store.“Sam’s Club is majorly for groceries, buying bulk. But now as they are increasing their toy collection, I think for parents, it’s a good thing," Patin said. In fact, her one-year-old son Viann’s entire nursery came out of a Toys R Us catalog. But since the toy giant filed for bankruptcy earlier this year, she had to look elsewhere.Since 1948, Toys R Us has dominated the toy market-- last year claiming almost 5% of the .4 billion industry.  Now that they are gone, retailers like Sam's Club saw an opportunity.“We have added about 70 new toys this holiday season," Sam's Club member experience manager, Victor Aguilar said. “We have way more toys than before, that way [parents are] not running around everywhere trying to get their toys. So they can do a one-stop-shop here, buy their food, clothes, toys. They get everything.”Like their “try then buy” food model, Sam's Club is offering toy demonstrations for the first time, ever."We want kids to interact with them, and ask Santa for that gift," Aguilar said. SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - UC San Diego is a pilot school for an exposure notification system that alerts users if they’ve come in contact with someone who tests positive for COVID-19. It’s a partnership with the state of California and officially launched on campus Thursday.The system uses smartphone technology to anonymously tell people they may have been exposed. It does not track locations and is completely anonymous. It starts working when a person downloads the system on their phone and enables notifications. It then records proximity to other devices that also have the program downloaded. If two phones come in contact with each other for more than about 15 minutes and are closer than around six feet, it takes note of that. Then, if a person tests positive later, they can go in the program and click a button saying they tested positive, and their system sifts through all the devices that previously had extended exposure, sending those users alerts about the possible exposure.Doctor Christopher Longhurst, Chief Information Officer and Associate Chief Medical Officer for UCSD Health said the biggest factor that will impact effectiveness is the number of users.“We’d like to see 75% of that community or more adopting. Modeling done by Oxford and other universities has shown that if we can get over 50% adoption in a population, you can actually help to end outbreaks,” said Doctor Longhurst.As of Friday, about one day into the official launch, the school said 7,985 people had signed up.
