Scientists are working to eliminate a type of heart disease in dogs using gene therapy. They're zoning in on a heart condition called mitral valve disease that’s common in 6% of dogs. Scientists are using Cavalier King Charles spaniels for the research. They tend to develop it at a younger age. Scientists at Tufts University have already tested gene therapy in mice. A virus is injected into them to deliver DNA to cells which causes them to create a protein. What it essentially does is stops the heart valve from getting thicker, stopping the valve from leaking. Researchers are now moving on to testing this in dogs. But they think the treatment could go beyond just canines. “Many of the dog diseases are naturally occurring and really great models for human disease,” says Dr. Vicky Yang, a veterinary cardiologist and research assistant professor at Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University. “And I can see this, if it becomes successful in dogs, potentially going into thinking about treatment for humans for mitral valve disease.”The biotech company behind the treatment agrees. It says it could also expand beyond heart problems. “I think a larger question, though, is if we are able to prove this thesis of treating aging, making the animal generally healthier, could also treat heart failure, what other diseases could we treat in dogs?” says Daniel Oliver, the CEO of Rejuvenate Bio. “And could we progress this treatment onto past dogs and other animals and possibly humans?” The gene therapy would only be used for dogs just starting to experience heart problems.Researchers still need to make sure the gene therapy is safe for all breeds before they make it available to the public. 1730

The land of the free gained almost 200 new members this week in Colorado, and to say they’re excited to become new US citizens is an understatement. “It’s been a lifelong dream to become a US citizen, and it just happened,” said Katrin Redford, a new US citizen originally from Germany. “I want to get a better life here,” said Samuel Rodriguez, who came to the US from MexicoShang Wu came to the US more than 40 years ago and is finally getting his citizenship. “It feels great. It’s honored and it’s the right thing to do for me,” he said. Their excitement is a reward after what can be a long, grueling process. Some people think it takes a little too long. “We’re seeing processing times that are published by US CIS online for the Denver field office in terms of 10 and half to 22 and a half months,” said Jennifer Kain-Rios. Kain-Rios is an immigration attorney. She says processing delays are a problem and it’s been getting worse. “Over the course of the past couple years, we have definitely seen naturalization applications taking much longer than they had in the past,” said Kain-Rios. The US Commission on Civil Rights recently discovered the same thing. “The report is intended to just bring attention to this issue. Our hope is that the US Commission on Civil Rights will be able share it with Congress and other stake holders to ensure that the issue can be addressed adequately,” said Alvina Earnhart US Commission on Civil Rights, Colorado Advisory Committee. Earnhart sits on the Commission’s Colorado Advisory Committee. She says the application processing delays are more than just an inconvenience. They’re affecting people’s rights. “When we held the hearing in February, one of the panelists pointed out if an individual did not submit an application by March of this year, that there was no chance that they would be able to participate in 2020 election,” said Earnhart. As for why there’s a backlog, there’s no simple answer. The commission’s report found a handful of possible reasons that include changing policies and inadequate resources. The USCIS says the problem is simply an increase in applications. “Processing times impact people in very real ways. I think the most significant concern for many people is a desire to be able to vote,” said Kain-Rios. That desire is so strong, people were registering to vote the second the citizenship ceremony was over. “It is very important to participate, in every country you know, not just here,” said Rodriguez. US Citizen and Immigration Services, which handles citizenship applications, says they’ve brought those long wait times down. “Well the average after this month, will be just under seven months and we do have some number of outlier applications that take longer, but one the average, we’re about seven months,” said Kristie Goldinger, the Colorado District Director with US Citizenship and Immigration Services. A country rock star from Detroit is now part of an investigation. The Macomb County Sheriff’s Office confirms to WXYZ that the man known as Uncle Kracker is accused of being involved in an altercation at a bar in Harrison Township. The alleged incident happened at Bumpers Landing on Labor Day. Matthew Shafer, whose stage name is Uncle Kracker, is a country rock star who worked with Kid Rock, then broke out on his own in 2000. A witness said when bouncers tried to make a patron at Bumper’s Landing leave after an argument with a bartender, for some reason someone with Uncle Kracker intervened. The musician allegedly backed up his friend and an altercation followed.WXYZ reached out to Shafer, but has not yet heard back.
