SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A sailboat and power boat collided near the Coronado Bridge Sunday afternoon, injuring four people, according to San Diego Harbor Police.A good Samaritan drove by and noticed people floating in life jackets as their boat took on water. He picked up nine people and ferried them to Pepper Park. "It's just what you do you're a boater, it's what you're supposed to do, you help out on the water, people have helped us and we've helped other people," Kary Brownlee said. The damaged powerboat, a Bayliner, was towed back to the Pepper Park launch ramp where four passengers were evaluated for minor injuries. No one was taken to the hospital. The sailboat cruised back to Coronado on its own power."All it takes is a split second, when the captain is not paying attention that could cause a collision," boat safety advocate Amos Zolna said. He explained sail boats generally have the right of way, as they are harder to maneuver, compared to a power boat. Zolna said it's hard to navigate near the bridge, due to the large pillars that create blind spots.Harbor Police reported the 911 call at 1:28 p.m. They are investigating the cause of the crash and if any alcohol was involved. 1204

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A man suspected of causing serious injuries that left a man in a coma-like state for nearly four years before his eventual death was arrested earlier this month, San Diego police announced Tuesday.San Diego police said 42-year-old Manuel Lopez was identified by investigators as the suspect in the death of Allen Stokes and was taken into custody on Sept. 3, on suspicion of murder. On March 12, 2016, Stokes was found unresponsive in an apartment building in the 7100 block of El Cajon Boulevard. Stokes was taken to the hospital for treatment, but his condition never improved.According to police, Stokes “remained in a conscious, yet unresponsive state, until his death” on Nov. 8, 2019.The San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office determined Stokes’ death “was the result of injuries received in March of 2016.”Stokes was 67 years old at the time he was injured. He was 72 years old when he died, police stated. After Stokes’ death was determined to be a homicide, investigators gathered evidence and spoke to those who knew the victim and eventually identified Lopez as a suspect in the case.Police said Lopez was booked into County Jail following his arrest.During Lopez's Tuesday afternoon arraignment, Deputy District Attorney Mary Naoom alleged a mallet was used in the killing. In entering his plea, Lopez told San Diego County Superior Court Judge Peter Deddeh, `"`I'm innocent."Lopez was ordered held on million bail and a bail review hearing was set next week in his case.Anyone with information on the case is urged to contact SDPD’s Homicide Unit at 619-531-2293 or Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477. 1643

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego County public defense attorney is accused of providing a felon with a firearm, according to local law enforcement.  San Diego Police confirm that Andrea Bayer was arrested on August 1 and booked into Las Colinas women’s jail on charges related to selling, supplying or delivering a firearm to either a convicted felon or someone wanted on a felony warrant. She was released the same day on bond.  On the State Bar of California’s website, it shows that the 37 year-old’s license is still active and that she works as an Alternate Public Defender for San Diego County. The District Attorney’s Office says Bayer has not been charged and the case remains under review. A Group Communications Officer with San Diego County sent us the following statement: “The County of San Diego cannot comment on personnel matters. Ms. Bayer is currently on leave from her position pending the outcome of the investigation. The Public Defender believes in the presumption of innocence and has faith in the judicial process.” 1070

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A non-profit that drives sick kids and their families to the hospital is celebrating one million miles.Climbing into an Emilio Nares Foundation car, mom Latoya Johnson and her 19-year-old daughter Tay Tay started recalling the memories over the last decade. They were one of ENF's first rides. The non-profit was founded in 2003 and began giving rides in August 2005, according to ENF Vice President of Programs Luz Quiroga. The program expanded from San Diego to Orange County in 2009. Rides started in the Imperial Valley in 2015, and expanded again to San Bernardino, Riverside, and South Los Angeles in 2019.The founders lost their son, Emilio, when he was 6 years old to leukemia. During the exhausting hours of treatment, Emilio's parents realized other families didn't have enough support. When Emilio passed, they turned his loss into a legacy.Johnson said Tay Tay was first diagnosed with a tumor the size of a golf ball in her chest when she was 4-and-a-half years old."It was behind her left lung, it was growing attached to her lung," Johnson said. She found it hard to get to doctor's appointments and treatment. 'It was about three buses, two trolleys and a bus on the other side,' Johnson said. The trip took two and a half hours, then they had to walk up a hill to get to Rady Children's Hospital. In the doctor's office she saw a flier for the Emilio Nares Foundation, and they have been getting picked up ever since, shortening their trip to a half-hour door-to-door.Once they kicked the tumor in Tay Tay's chest, they found out when Tay Tay was 15 that she had a brain tumor. "She's 19 years old now, so she literally is a walking blessing, a walking miracle, and I wouldn't trade her for nothing in the world," Johnson said smiling, pinching her daughter's cheek.Johnson said without the foundation she would have been in tears and they absolutely saved her daughter's life. With the foundation celebrating one million miles, Johnson is working on understanding the impact the foundation had not only on their lives, but on 4,000 children."I wanna cry, because I know I'm crying but the tears won't come out because they're all on the inside, but it's amazing. I'm just happy and blessed for you guys," Johnson said hugging CEO Karen Terra. She hopes telling her story will get more families the help they need.ENF kicked off their "Ride with Emilio" campaign Monday and it continues through the end of the month. The goal is to raise awareness for families who need this service as well as the funds to keep it going (donations are being accepted here.) 2598

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A program through the County's office of Child Welfare Services is making sure every kid in the foster program gets to celebrate this holiday season. The "Home for the Holidays" program pairs kids in the foster shelters with families for a holiday, so they don't have to spend the holiday alone."This is a great opportunity for families to kind of try it out and see what it's like to work with our youth," says Kimberly Giardina, the Director of Child Welfare Services.Right now, San Diego County has about 140 kids in the foster program that need a foster family. While this program doesn't give them a long-term solution, it helps the kids through a difficult season."People open their homes," says Giardina. "They see that our youth are just like every other kid in the neighborhood."Nanci Weinstein, who has fostered three kids through the county and adopted one, says it's an experience that's invaluable for both the kids and the families."I can't imagine what that might feel like for a child," she says. "Every moment is precious because this child is in a situation where they need someone to take care of them."Families interested in participating in the Home for the Holidays program need to complete a background check, home safety inspection, training and orientation. The process can take several months. While it may be too late for this holiday season, Giardina says people can try any holiday, secular or religious. For more information, go to the county's website here or call 877-792-KIDS (5437). 1540
