SAN DIEGO — A College Area nonprofit that is seeing record requests for its services may not survive the pandemic itself.Sharia's Closet provides free clothes to people who have an emergency need. Founder Shamine Linton said with the Coronavirus pandemic, the organization has already served more than 2,500 families in 2020, a record pace. "Due to unemployment, homelessness and domestic violence, our needs have grown," Linton said. Sharia's Closet, named for Linton's daughter, operates out of a former dental office near San Diego State University. It's divided into five rooms that are filled with clothes for children, teens, men and women - casual to professional. Linton said the organization gets connected to families through 54 social service organizations. While the demand is at an all-time high, the prospects of surviving past 2020 are not. "I don't think I'll have the money to continue for the next year," Linton said. Linton said the organization survives off community donations, but those have lagged in this economy. She has reduced hours for her staff of two, and the closet is now only open three days a week. The formerly manageable ,500 in monthly operating costs is now becoming daunting. "I'm hoping for financial donations to help keep our doors open, to help keep the service for the community that needs it the most," Linton said.Linton said Sharia's Closet has been able to receive public assistance for personal protective equipment, but not operations. SALT LAKE CITY, Utah -- A woman was arrested after she allegedly threw a bag full of vomit at St. Mark's Hospital in Salt Lake City.West Valley police say Shaynell Pamela Payne, 25, entered the hospital's emergency room Tuesday night. After her arrival, Payne allegedly became argumentative and combative with the hospital staff.After Payne threw up in the emergency room, staff members handed her towels to clean up the vomit. When she threw up a second time in a bag, Payne reportedly became agitated when asked to calm down and threw the bag of vomit at a nurse.According to a police report, Payne attempted to leave the hospital after striking the nurse and assaulting other members of the medical staff.A police officer attempted to arrest Payne, who tried to grab the officer's hands and pull away. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A group of San Diego high school seniors will be honored with other students from throughout Southern California Friday at the second annual Pacific Islander High School Graduate Recognition Ceremony in San Bernardino.Long Beach, Inland Empire and other surrounding regions will participate in the event, which will include cultural celebrations like a Polynesian fireknife performance and a Maori warrior dance.Siaosi Veimau, who immigrated to the U.S. from Tonga at age 10, will serve as the ceremony's keynote speaker. Veimau currently runs a Pacific Islander cultural group with his wife and San Diego State University's Pacific Islander Student Association.``My vision for every student is to discover who they are and to be intentional about their dreams and passions,'' Veimau said. ``Our Pacific Islander roots keep us grounded. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A drunken driver who crashed into a Lyft vehicle at high speed on state Route 163 in Balboa Park -- killing one passenger and injuring the other two occupants -- pleaded guilty Wednesday to gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and DUI causing injury. Alondra Selena Marquez, 22, of San Diego, faces up to 13 years and four months in prison, with sentencing slated for Sept. 24 at the downtown San Diego courthouse. Prosecutors say Marquez had a .25 percent blood alcohol content -- more than three times the legal limit -- at the time of the March 23 crash that killed San Francisco resident Giao Pham. RELATED: 1 dead, 3 injured in crash along SR-163Pham, 40, was in San Diego to attend a wedding when the vehicle he was riding in was struck from behind by Marquez's car about 2:30 a.m. on SR 163 near Laurel Street. Deputy District Attorney Cally Bright said Marquez was traveling somewhere between 101 and 108 miles per hour at the time. The other passenger -- Pham's friend, Andy Lynn -- was hospitalized with a traumatic brain injury, which still affects him to this day, the prosecutor said. The Lyft driver suffered minor injuries in the crash, but has had to seek counseling due to the emotional after-effects of the crash, according to Bright. 1289
