SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego County's unemployment rate ticked down to 14.8%, but a potential new wave of closures could wipe out a large portion of the recent job gains.The San Diego Association of Governments reported Thursday that the jobless rate in the region is continuing to drop from a peak of 25% on May 9. Still, roughly 250,000 workers in the county remain unemployed amid the Coronavirus outbreak. Ray Major, the agency's chief economist, said the increased spread of the virus could lead to prolonged economic frustration. "What (the report) shows is that we're ready to go back to work, but that the recovery is probably going to be slow, and we're probably going to be having this conversation with double digit unemployment throughout the summer and probably into the fall," he said. The potential drawbacks would take a financial and mental toll on thousands of workers who returned to their jobs, only to be sent back to file for unemployment. "It was hard working 50 to 60 hours a week and being proud that you can maintain everything and then all of a sudden you can't do anything. It was almost like being ripped apart, for me," Season said. The McKessons had to shutter their Mission Hills salon permanently but did reopen their Fallbrook location, called Mary Jane North. That cleared the way for seven stylists, including them, to go back to work. "We get nervous because there's things that are still shutting down around, and so that's a little daunting," Season said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego County was officially added to California's "monitoring list" as the number of coronavirus cases across the state increases, and Gov. Gavin Newsom said he expected local health officials to comply with specific orders that include the closure of indoor dining spaces.As of Monday afternoon, San Diego County joined five other counties on the monitoring list. The other counties added to the list: Colusa, Madera, Marin, Merced, and Monterey.Of the state’s 58 counties, 23 of them are on the state’s list.Ahead of the Fourth of July weekend, Newsom ordered counties that have been on the list for at least three days to shutter indoor operations at businesses such as restaurants, wineries, movie theaters, zoos, museums and cardrooms.In a tweet on his Twitter account, Newsom said:"CA is now asking Colusa, Madera, Marin, Merced, Monterey & San Diego to close indoor operations for:-Restaurants-Wineries-Movie theaters-Zoos, museums-CardroomsBars must close ALL operations."During his Monday news conference, Newsom said he was awaiting an order from local health officials in each of the newly-added counties to issue an order enacting the measures, which are expected to remain in effect for at least three weeks.Counties on the list were also ordered to close all of its bars, a move San Diego County had already taken ahead of the holiday weekend. Philo Mitman is a service technician with ASI The White Glove Guys."When this heat does come, our call volume is tripled, quadrupled cause everyone needs it now," said Mitman. Mitman said it's important to replace filters, possibly every month, depending on use. "A dirty filter is the biggest thing as a homeowner that can cause bigger issues because if that is neglected the big motors can get seized up, they can overheat , you can block coils off which causes big, big problems," said Mitman.Another common mistake, according to Mitman, is closing vents. "Common misconception is that people close vents off to save money, when in fact, it actually costs you more money when you do that because your system is designed for a certain amount of air flow to be delivered to the home and if you start cutting that off , the system tries to make up for that so it works extra harder," said Mitman. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Gas & Electric is warning customers of a scam in which people are getting phone calls and emails saying they owe hundreds of dollars for a new electrical meter.San Diego resident Maria Genova almost fell victim to the scam."It was very elaborate, very credible, very persistent and very convincing," she said.Genova showed 10News an email she received, and Iit had the SDG&E logo and even a QR code. The email said she owed 8.63 for a meter upgrade and if she didn't pay it, her service would be suspended.It also promised hundreds of dollars of other fees for removal, locksmith services and more.Genova also got a pair of phone calls about the issue, which had her convinced that it was legitimate."I was about ready to pay," said Genova. "I had my credit card in hand. But as soon as he said I had to pay cash, I knew there was something wrong."Genova called SDG&E, and Tthey told her the email and phone calls were not from the company.In a statement, SDG&E told 10News that they will never charge customers to replace a smart electric meter and that if they need to do any maintenance on a meter, technicians will contact the resident before doing any work.SDG&E said they've received reports of more than 13,600 scam phone calls already in 2019. It's something they constantly monitor, and they have a page on their website dedicated to helping people identify and avoid scams.Genova said she's glad she didn't lose any money and hopes other people can learn from her close call."Ask questions if you have any doubt," she said. "Call the company themselves, ask if this is true or not before you give anyone your information."Here is the full statement from SDG&E:"We can confirm that this particular case is indeed a scam.
