SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Two U.S. Army Special Operations soldiers were killed and three others were injured during an aircraft incident, a U.S. Army official confirmed.The incident happened around 7 p.m. Thursday evening during what was described by a U.S. Army Special Operations Command public affairs officer as “routine training.”Department of Defense officials confirmed a Blackhawk helicopter crashed on or near San Clemente Island. An Army Public Affairs Officer sent ABC 10News a statement reading: “An element of U.S. Army Special Operations Command was conducting routine training in the vicinity of Coronado, California, on August 27, when an aircraft incident occurred. Two Soldiers were killed and three were injured. The area has been secured and an investigation into the incident is underway. More information will be released 24-hours following next of kin notification. Our sincere condolences go out the families and friends of the deceased. We thank you for not contacting them during this difficult time.”ABC 10News learned the soldiers were taken to Scripps Memorial Hospital following the incident.Brian MacPherson saw the helicopters land at the hospital, "I knew something was really really wrong ... The signed dollar was handed to Allen at the Ceremonial First Pitch, a day after the 22-year-old made his Major League debut at Petco Park. Allen's debut performance on the Major League mound Tuesday was nothing short of stellar. Off the mound, he also hit a single to right field, helping his own cause in a 4-1 victory for the Padres. This his was the game that changed Logan Allen's life forever, and earned him a dollar from John Cena. It all started in January 2018, when the then-Minor Leaguer had a chance encounter with Cena at a Tampa Steak House. The two clicked and made a bet. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- With the announcement that San Diego Unified School District is beginning their school year online, some parents are looking at other options.Patrick Batten has four children. He said his incoming high school senior did well with distance learning in the Poway Unified School District, but it was a struggle for his 12-year-old.“It was not a platform that she adapted to,” Batten said.Batten and his wife both work full-time. Right now, Poway Unified is offering choices. In a letter to parents, the reopening plans include two options: a “return to on campus learning (with some online options) or participate in [the] Virtual Learning Academy.” Batten knows those options could change as the beginning of the school year gets closer. If some type of on-campus learning is off the table, they may look outside the district.“We’re exploring the option of private school and how do we financially afford that,” Batten said. He said he would also look to a district that does offer in-person instruction.“I’m strongly hoping that they stick with their original plan and they give the option for teachers to be able to teach in person if they’re comfortable with it, as well as if a teacher isn’t, that they have the option to teach online and give the same opportunity for parents,” Batten said.John Anderson’s two children are in the San Diego Unified School District. Monday, the school district announced it is “committed to the beginning of the school year online.”“I think the online experience in the spring was okay, but to do it for potentially a whole semester or a whole year, I think is going to be a pretty big struggle for the kids,” Anderson said. Like Batten, he has had discussions with his wife about options outside the district if some type of in-person instruction is not available.Some homeschool options have seen increased interest since the pandemic began. Sage Oak Charter School is an independent studies program that operates in several counties including San Diego. Now, I think a lot of families are enrolling who are wanting out of the traditional brick and mortar school because they don’t want what they had in the spring,” Anema said.South Bay mom Elisa Hilliard homeschools her three daughters and shares her experience through her social media channels as “San Diego Homeschool Mom.” Hilliard has advice for parents looking to homeschool their own kids.“Things are going to be different and they’re not always going to be easy. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - UC San Diego researchers want to understand better how humans are impacting climate change, looking to the ocean for answers. Inside the Hydraulics Lab at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography sits a large tank mimicking the ocean. "It's a one-of-a-kind experiment that has taken us eight years to get to the point of doing," said Kimberly Prather, Professor of Atmospheric Chemistry at UC San Diego. Funding for the novel project comes from the National Science Foundation, which put million into the first five years of research and another million into the next five years. When waves break, salts and other living material including viruses and bacteria are launched in the form of sea spray aerosols into the atmosphere. Scientists are interested in better understanding the role of these particles in controlling climate by forming clouds over oceans that cover nearly three-quarters of the earth's surface.Now the research includes experiments to determine how pollution from human activities interact with natural ocean emissions and change the chemical composition of the atmosphere."A lot of people still deny that humans are the ones changing things, this experiment will pinpoint how much and how fast humans are changing things," said Prather.She says changes in the ocean, atmosphere, and climate are happening much faster than scientists once thought. "We used to say we're passionate about it because it's affecting our kids and our grandkids. But it's affecting us right now, today," said Prather.They hope to pinpoint which human activities, like car emissions or coal combustion, are doing the most harm.Prather hopes answers discovered in the lab will guide policymakers on how to tackle the growing threat. 1765
