GREENWOOD, Ind. -- There's nothing like a cold ice cream cone on a hot day. On Wednesday, a large group of second grade students from Greenwood Schools got to take a field trip over to a local ice cream shop after reaching their reading goals. The students who earned 50 Accelerated Reading (AR) points got the sweet treat from Mrs. Curl's Ice Cream Shop. Fifty points is the equivalent of reading 100 books -- quite the accomplishment for these young readers. "This year we had more kids than ever before," said teacher Amber Ploutz in a Facebook post. "So you can imagine it was quite a sight, all of us walking down."As the group of students crossed the city streets, they walked past a group of construction workers. Ploutz said one of the workers out front heard that the students were being treated to ice cream for reaching their reading goals. Instead of just congratulating the students, he took it a step forward and really made their day."He paid for all 54 kids' ice cream cones," said Ploutz. "He didn't want any recognition and said he did it because he was proud of all the hard work they put into school and told them to keep up the great reading."In return, Mrs. Curl's Ice Cream Shop paid that man's good deed forward. The shop gave out free drinks and ice cream to all members of the road crew and also to the police officers helping direct traffic in the area. The worker didn't want any recognition for his random act of kindness, and only gave students his nickname, to remain anonymous. He said people call him, Bub."So thank you, Bub," said Ploutz. "Today was a day these kiddos and I will never forget."   1686

Good news and bad news from the IRS this July. The good: the agency reopened for business as of July 13th, which means it is now taking phone calls and processing tax filings as quickly as possible. The bad: during a year when every dime counts, the agency says as many as 4.7 million tax refunds will be delayed another few months.Cristy Mack is one of them. She and her husband never wait to file their taxes because she depends on her refund. But like almost five million other people, they still file paper returns because they are most comfortable doing that."We mailed our paper forms at the end of February," she said. But five months later, Mack still doesn't have her refund."A total of 18 weeks have gone by since we mailed in our return," Mack said. She tried calling the IRS, she says, but like countless other taxpayers, ran into a brick wall."They say they aren't taking calls at the moment," she said. Why refunds are taking so long this yearThe IRS's national taxpayer advocate now says as 4.7 million people who filed paper returns will have very late refunds. That's because the agency furloughed thousands of workers this spring and stopped processing paper returns for two months, creating a huge backlog.Paper processing has restarted, but workers are far behind.Mack needs her tax refund badly."It means a lot to us," she said. "Especially with everything going on, and my husband's job has been really slow, and we are making less.We passed Mack's information on to the IRS, though it may not make a difference if her return is buried in a stack of thousands."When you rely on that as part of your income and it's not there, it does make things a little sketchy sometimes," she said. And with the IRS extending the tax deadline to July 15 this year, even more paper returns are about to be added to the stack. If you are still waiting for your refund, all you can do is log on the IRS website, go to the "Where's my Refund" section, and cross your fingers. As always, don't waste your money.Don't Waste Your Money" is a registered trademark of Scripps Media, Inc. GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — The Grand Rapids Police Department (GRPD) is investigating after vandals defaced gravestones at a Jewish cemetery with pro-Trump graffiti on Monday — just hours before the President delivered his last campaign speech of the current election cycle at a local airport. The vandalism occurred at the Ahavas Achim Cemetery in Grand Rapids. "TRUMP" was painted on the back of four headstones, while "MAGA" was written on two of them. The paint appeared to have been applied on Monday. Police say don't have a lead on any suspects, and no evidence was left at the scene.Michigan Jewish Democrats released a statement on the vandalism on Monday evening."The Michigan Democratic Jewish Caucus is appalled and outraged by the desecration of Ahavas Israel cemetery in Grand Rapids, a year after the city's reform synagogue was vandalized with antisemitic imagery, and on the day Donald Trump is slated to close his campaign with a rally in Grand Rapids," the organization said in the statement.Rep. Justin Amash, I-Michigan, who was born to Arab-Christian parents, also tweeted about the incident Monday evening, condemning the anti-semitism shown in the vandalism. 1183

George H.W. Bush, the 41st President of the United States, died on Friday at the age of 94, his family announced late Friday. In a statement from former President George W. Bush reads: "Jeb, Neil, Marvin, Doro, and I are saddened to announce that after 94 remarkable years, our dear Dad has died. George H. W. Bush was a man of the highest character and the best dad a son or daughter could ask for. The entire Bush family is deeply grateful for 41’s life and love, for the compassion of those who have cared and prayed for Dad, and for the condolences of our friends and fellow citizens."The elder Bush served as president from 1989 to 1993, overseeing the United States' efforts in the Persian Gulf during Operation Desert Storm.   756
