SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Padres all-star pitcher Kirby Yates will be out of his comfort zone Sunday night when he and his wife, Ashlee, host a night of stand-up comedy. The event will raise money and awareness for a cause very close to the Yates' heart: Epilepsy.One night in 2018, the couple was asleep when Kirby heard Ashlee begin making strange sounds. It went from that to a seizure. She was pregnant with their second child at the time."It's the first time I'd ever been involved in anything like that," Yates told 10News. "It's hard to see your wife, she's pregnant with our son, and you have feelings that you've never had before.""He was definitely terrified," Ashlee said. "I obviously don't remember it, but I just know he had a very hard time with that."After a myriad of tests, Ashlee was shocked to be diagnosed with epilepsy. "I didn't know it was random and can come at any time or age," she recalls.When searching for ways to cope with the diagnosis, Ashlee turned to one of her favorite things: Stand-up comedy. She had performed at clubs before, but began integrating humor about her condition into her act. "That was actually my outlet. As soon as this happened, that was the first thing I did. I was like, I need to do something drastic to deal with this and I don't know what those options are," Ashlee said. "I like to make people laugh. I like to have fun, so this seemed like a good fit."That led to the decision to host "Comedy for a Cause", which will take place Sunday night at the American Comedy Co. in the Gaslamp. Ashlee will perform with two other well-known San Diego comedians. Kirby and several of the biggest Padres stars will be in the crowd. They also will likely be the biggest targets for the comics' humor, "I know they're big Padres fans, so I'm sure they've been following the season and have some good jokes," Ashlee said. "I did suggest a roast on Kirby.""I told them they can roast me as much as they want and it's fine," Kirby responded. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Outrageously high electric bills are landing in inboxes across San Diego County, some nearing ,000.And it's not just the sweltering San Diego summer leading to the increases."I was wondering exactly what's going on and wondering if there was an issue," said Matt Berlin, a Point Loma resident who got a 0 electric bill this month from San Diego Gas and Electric. "I don't know what we're doing different from year to year."It's not just the near-record heat that is causing the increases due to higher air-conditioning use. SDG&E spokesperson Wes Jones said the utility instituted a state-mandated third usage tier for its highest users. Am I even on the right plan, what can I do?" Jones said.Jones said San Diegans can switch for free to a Time of Use plan, where energy is most expensive from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Then, they can plan ahead by setting the A/C lower before 4 p.m., turning it up when that time hits."You're going to experience some savings right there because your A/C is not running as hard from 4 to 9 but you're still using all that cooling you had during the day," he said.Jones said SDG&E is continuing to move all of its customers to the Time of Use plan. Each should transition by next year.He added that the utility will refund customers the difference if they end up paying more under Time of Use than the previous arrangement, for the first year. 2064

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Parents in Pacific Beach are calling on more enforcement at the Crown Point Elementary field.During school hours the field is only open to elementary students and then opens to the public 30 minutes before and after. Mariluci Byrnes has a daughter who plays on the field with the Pacific Youth Soccer League. She says many dog owners ignore city signs warning it's a violation to take your dog off-leash and to not pick up after them.  “Just not a good combination when you have kids playing and there’s poop all over the place," said Byrnes.Byrnes says kids and parents often step in dog poop and she worries an off-leash dog could injure a child.  The field is now in the San Diego Humane Society’s (SDHS) jurisdiction. An SDHS spokesperson confirms they’ve gotten complaints about the issue, but sometimes other calls involving safety take priority over off-leash dogs. She added that while officers can give citations, they often try first to educate dog owners. The City tells 10News they are aware of the ongoing problem: 1064

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- More than a dozen migrants were apprehended after 150 migrants tried to climb the border fence in San Diego, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection. The incident happened New Year’s Eve at an unspecified time. According to the agency, 45 migrants turned back due to CBP’s increased presence at the border before another group of migrants started throwing rocks at agents. Border Patrol agents added that the group tried to lift toddler-sized children over the concertina wire, but agents were unable to help the children because too many rocks were being thrown. Agents used pepper spray upwind and tear gas of the migrants to try and deter them from throwing rocks. CBP says the measures weren’t aimed at the migrants and “successfully suppressed the rock throwers causing them to flee the area.”Most of the migrants returned to Mexico through a hole under the fence and by climbing back over the fence. A total of 25 migrants were apprehended. Under CHP’s use of force policy, the incident is being reviewed. The incident comes on the heels of another recent event at the border in which hundreds of migrants tried to rush the border, forcing the hours-long closure of the San Ysidro Port of Entry.
