SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - When President Trump visited San Diego in September, he made a special trip down to the border to tout the wall and its technological advances. The president has made border security a major part of his term, even calling for the addition of 5,000 border patrol agents.A new study from San Diego State University says the increased emphasis on stopping illegal crossings and drug smuggling could make those very agents the targets of corruption and bribe offers. "When one door is closed, they try to find another one which is open," said David Janscisc, the public affairs professor at SDSU who authored the study. Janscisc says the harder it gets for smugglers to get people or drugs into the U.S., the more likely they are to seek help from agents at ports of entry. "You can clear a car full of drugs just by not inspecting it," he said. Janscisc isn't saying Customs and Border Protection is corrupt, but wanted to study how corruption occurs. He based his study off of 160 cases of CBP corruption over 10 years, noting the agency has 60,000 employees. Janscisc found the employees with less than five years of experience were more likely to be involved in drug-related corruption. However, those who were there longer were more likely to commit immigration-related offenses, such as falsifying paperwork to help get someone into the country. In a statement, Customs and Border Protection said applicants go through a strict hiring process that could include polygraph tests. "After the hiring process, CBP applies proactive measures in the form of training, rules geared to ensure workplace integrity and oversight and management of frontline officers and agents by CBP leadership at every level," the statement said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- With the announcement that San Diego Unified School District is beginning their school year online, some parents are looking at other options.Patrick Batten has four children. He said his incoming high school senior did well with distance learning in the Poway Unified School District, but it was a struggle for his 12-year-old.“It was not a platform that she adapted to,” Batten said.Batten and his wife both work full-time. Right now, Poway Unified is offering choices. In a letter to parents, the reopening plans include two options: a “return to on campus learning (with some online options) or participate in [the] Virtual Learning Academy.” Batten knows those options could change as the beginning of the school year gets closer. If some type of on-campus learning is off the table, they may look outside the district.“We’re exploring the option of private school and how do we financially afford that,” Batten said. He said he would also look to a district that does offer in-person instruction.“I’m strongly hoping that they stick with their original plan and they give the option for teachers to be able to teach in person if they’re comfortable with it, as well as if a teacher isn’t, that they have the option to teach online and give the same opportunity for parents,” Batten said.John Anderson’s two children are in the San Diego Unified School District. Monday, the school district announced it is “committed to the beginning of the school year online.”“I think the online experience in the spring was okay, but to do it for potentially a whole semester or a whole year, I think is going to be a pretty big struggle for the kids,” Anderson said. Like Batten, he has had discussions with his wife about options outside the district if some type of in-person instruction is not available.Some homeschool options have seen increased interest since the pandemic began. Sage Oak Charter School is an independent studies program that operates in several counties including San Diego. Student services coordinator Chelsey Anema said the number of inquiries to the school has increased “extreme numbers.”“Our normal family that enrolls is a family who, they just are passionate about homeschooling. Now, I think a lot of families are enrolling who are wanting out of the traditional brick and mortar school because they don’t want what they had in the spring,” Anema said.South Bay mom Elisa Hilliard homeschools her three daughters and shares her experience through her social media channels as “San Diego Homeschool Mom.” Hilliard has advice for parents looking to homeschool their own kids.“Things are going to be different and they’re not always going to be easy. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Wells Fargo Bank officials are offering a ,000 reward for the arrest and conviction of the person responsible for robbing three San Diego-area banks.The string of robberies started September 11 at the Wells Fargo Bank, located at 5522 Balboa Avenue in Clairemont, followed by a second theft October 6 at the branch located at 276 N. El Camino Real in Encinitas.In a release, FBI and the San Diego Violent Crimes Task Force officials said they believe that the same individual, described as a white male in his 50s-60s, is responsible for both robberies."In each robbery, the robber approached the teller and presented a note demanding money from the bank in a similar manner," said FBI special agent Davene Butler.Images from those robberies show the suspect wearing a hat and sunglasses. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - UC San Diego School of Medicine researchers believe they have discovered a way to reduce what they describe as health risks associated with red meat. A study published Monday in the journal Nature Microbiology considers whether bacterial enzymes could be used to clear from our tissues a carbohydrate created when humans eat red meat. The carbohydrate, known as Neu5Gc, builds up as we eat red meat, researchers say. They suggest our immune systems treat Neu5Gc as a foreign invader and generate antibodies against it, leading to chronic inflammation and other diseases. A team led by UC San Diego professor of pediatrics and bioengineering Karsten Zengler, Ph.D., believes bacterial enzymes could remove Neu5Gc from red meat before people eat it. “It’s our hope that this approach could be used as a sort of probiotic or prebiotic to help reduce inflammation and the risk of inflammatory diseases - without giving up steak,” said Zengler. The researchers bought steak and pork sausage from a grocery store and rubbed it with a lab-made bacterial enzyme. They found that “sure enough, most of the Neu5Gc came right off,” according to UC San Diego officials. Zengler and his team are working to optimize the enzyme to make sure it removes Neu5Gc and not similar carbohydrates.
