SCRIPPS RANCH (KGTV): At the top of a trail along Semillon Boulevard and Pomerado Road, right next to a sign that reads, "No Dumping - 00 fine," sits a giant pile of wood chips.It's been there for years, growing and shrinking in size. But right now, people who live nearby say it's as big as they can remember."Yeah, it is a little larger than normal," says Douglas Burns, who lives in a home next to the pile.The wood chips are from trees cut down by maintenance workers in the area. The work is part of the Scripps Ranch Civic Association's maintenance contract with the city. The workers take the leaves to the dump but leave the wood chips behind.Bob Ilko, the President of the SRCA, says it saves money on beautification projects. He says the city doesn't have to pay to haul the wood chips and tree pieces away or buy fresh mulch when they need it for landscaping.The wood chips are used to help with weed control and ground cover across Scripps Ranch."It's natural here, it's generated here, it stays here," says Ilko, adding that there's also an environmental benefit since it keeps all the wood chips out of city landfills.Ilko says the pile is larger than usual right now, but that's because crews have been hard at work clearing away dead and dying trees from the area.And while the wood chips are on city-owned land, that does not mean they're available to the general public."It's city property," says Ilko. "If people take them, it defeats the purpose of keeping the wood chips here to save money."He also says contractors are not allowed to use the area to dump their wood chips.When asked if the pile presents a fire hazard, Ilko told 10News the Fire Department has been out to inspect the area, and they say there is no danger of any spontaneous combustion."It's not mulch, it doesn't heat up and break down like manure or mulch," says Ilko. 1889

SANTEE, Calif. (KGTV) -- A woman who escaped from the Las Colinas Detention and Reentry Facility in Santee in early April pleaded not guilty Monday. 22-year-old Destiny Guns pleaded not guilty to six charges related to the escape. Guns was the first woman ever to escape from the Santee Jail, deputies say. RELATED: Woman who escaped from Las Colinas jail in Santee recapturedThe escape was reported on April 6 after Guns underwent a medical exam. Guns reportedly climbed over several fences and walls during the escape. Her clothes were found in an open field near the jail and police dogs traced her to the back of a shopping center before losing her trail. Guns was first arrested on April 1 for possession of a stolen car. She was recaptured on April 11. Details on where she was spotted are still unclear. 819

SANTEE, Calif. (KGTV) — Cameras caught a thief wreaking havoc at an East County business park, culminating in several destructive acts after he realized he was locked in.Scott Trafton has seen the video countless times, but his emotions have yet to lessen."Aggravating and makes me angry," said Trafton, who owns XP Builders.Just before midnight last Thursday night, a truck is seen driving into a business park on Wheatlands Court. The truck, believed to be a Chevy Silverado, is parked in the dark for more than four hours, before a man emerges and heads toward Trafton's general contractor business. In the video, the man grabs items from the truck bed, before prying open a toolbox in the back. A knife at this side, the man would get away with more than a thousand dollars with of Trafton's tools. "It hurts being a small business. Every penny counts," said Trafton.Trafton is not the only victim. The thief left behind a trail of shattered truck windows and missing items."Basically took whatever wasn't bolted down," said Trafton.When the man went to leave, he was met by a gate, locked by someone who had left earlier. The camera spies him apparently chaining his truck to the fence and pulling forward, but he can't get the fence down."He then came over to another truck and broke a window. He then took a moving blanket to protect his truck and drove to another fence," said Trafton.In the video, you can see the flash of his lights, before his final act."He ran into the fence, spread it wide open and knocked it over," said Trafton.The repair bill will tally some ,000. SAN MARCOS, Calif. (KGTV) - Several people in a San Marcos gated community have reported being targets of package thieves, according to one victim who spoke with 10News. The Sheriff's Department is looking at surveillance video, which appears to provide several leads.Mikayla Manos says a package was sent to her home on Almond Drive Friday.  Manos is a mentor for foster children. The package contained the personal items of one of those children, which she was asked to deliver to him.  When Manos arrived home, she did not see the package.Manos checked with her next-door neighbor, who has a surveillance camera. Video from Friday afternoon shows a girl walking past Manos' home. She turns and points toward Manos' porch and can be heard saying "get it".The video shows what appears to be a boy picking something up from Manos' porch, although the package cannot be clearly seen from the camera angle. At least two voices can be heard off camera. One is heard saying "I can't wait to wear these to school tomorrow." Manos says clothes are among the items stolen.Manos says she knows of at least three other neighbors who were victims.  10News spotted an empty Nordstrom bag ripped open on one neighbor's porch, while another neighbor tells 10News someone stole items from his garage when he briefly left it open around the same time.Several package boxes were found dumped nearby, including Manos'. (KGTV) — A group of Santa Clara County coworkers is more than 0 million richer.The 11 co-workers who pitched  a piece into an office lottery pool successfully matched all the winning numbers of the July 24 Mega Millions drawing.The co-workers, who range in age from 21 to 60, decided to play on a whim after seeing how high the jackpot had reached.
