BEIJING, June 17 (Xinhuanet) -- Flooding and landslides triggered by recent heavy rain have killed at least 42 people as of Wednesday in the worst hit provinces like Guangxi, Fujian and Sichuan, while 49 others are still missing.Storms are forecast to continue to sweep across most parts of South China over the next 10 days, with some areas due to receive 250mm of rain, the China Meteorological Administration said on Wednesday.The national weather forecaster said rainstorms will also hit Guizhou, Sichuan, Fujian and Guangdong the following week.The National Meteorological Center issued a yellow alert on Wednesday morning for heavy rain across parts of China. Residents wade through the waterlogged street in Nanning, southwest China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, on June 15. ZHOUQU, Gansu, Aug. 19 (Xinhua)-- More than 1,700 mudslide evacuees presently residing at schools in Zhouqu county of northwest China's Gansu Province are to be relocated as students will start the new semester soon, local authorities said Thursday.More than 400 households, altogether over 1,700 people, will be moved to Shachuan Village, in western of the mudslides-leveled county, said Yang Jianguo, head of the Civil Affairs Bureau of Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture which administers Zhouqu.The people are now living in dormitories and classrooms of three local schools, namely No.1 High School, No.1 Junior High and No. 3 Junior High. With students coming back from their summer vacation, the schools could no longer be used as settlement areas.More than one thousand tents will be erected at the new settlement zone covering an area of 67 mu (4.5 hectares), with three tents for each family, said Yang."They probably will have to spend the winter there so winter tents will be used," said Yang.The devastating mudslides which hit on Aug. 8 have claimed 1,364 lives with 401 people still missing as of 4 p.m. Thursday.Work crews will level the ground, ensure water and electricity supply and build lavatories from Aug. 21 to 23. BEIJING, Aug. 10 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Health reported 1,397 deaths from infectious diseases on the mainland in July.Some 750,000 infections were registered last month, including 10 cholera infections, according to a statement released Tuesday by the ministry.No plague cases or deaths from cholera were reported in July, the statement said.Plague and cholera are categorized as Class A infectious diseases -- the most serious class under China's Law on the Prevention and Treatment of Infectious Diseases.More than 350,000 cases of Class B diseases were also reported in the month, with 1,251 of them resulting in death.Tuberculosis, viral hepatitis, dysentery, syphilis and gonorrhea were among the five most frequently reported cases in the month, accounting for 94 percent of all Class B cases, the statement said.The death toll due to Class C disease was 146. The top three Class C diseases were hand-foot-mouth disease (HFMD), infectious diarrhea and mumps, which accounted for over 98 percent of cases in this category, the statement said.
