SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A car traveling at a high rate of speed crashed into a tree and power pole in the College Area late Sunday night, leaving nearly 2,000 residents without power.At around 11:45 p.m., San Diego police’s ABLE helicopter spotted and began following a car that was running several red lights and driving fast.As SDPD units were called to the car’s location, the vehicle lost control and slammed into a tree and then a power pole in the 4700 block of 54th Street.ABC 10News learned the transformer on the power pole was damaged, causing a power outage in the immediate area for a brief period.The driver got out of the wreckage and fled the scene, but officers tracked him down a short time later and took him into custody.Police learned the car involved had been reported stolen.No other details were released. 832

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - UCSD and Scripps Institution of Oceanography alumna Megan McArthur will head to space as the pilot for the SpaceX Crew-2 mission in early 2021, NASA announced this week.The Crew-2 flight will be the second SpaceX Crew Dragon flight to the International Space Station as part of NASA's commercial crew program.McArthur, who received her doctorate in oceanography from Scripps in 2002, traveled to space aboard the space shuttle Atlantis in 2009. She and her crew were part of a 12-day mission to repair the Hubble Space Telescope. McArthur operated the shuttle's robotic arm that grabbed and released the telescope, making her the last person to "touch" the telescope. She was born in Honolulu but considers California her home state. She holds a bachelor's degree in engineering from UCLA.The SpaceX Crew-2 flight will be her first trip to the International Space Station.Joining McArthur is NASA astronaut Shane Kimbrough as mission commander with Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency astronaut Akihiko Hoshide and European Space Agency astronaut Thomas Pesquet as mission specialists.McArthur is one of two Scripps Oceanography alumni who are astronauts. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - 36,000 pounds of cocaine seized in the Eastern Pacific Ocean will be offloaded Tuesday from the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Bertholf onto San Diego’s B Street Pier.The contraband is from 17 busts on smuggling vessels off the coasts of Central and South America, officials said. Five Coast Guard cutters were involved in the seizures between early February and early March.Rear Adm. Todd Sokalzuk, the 11th Coast Guard District commander who oversees the law enforcement phase of counter-smuggling operations in the Eastern Pacific region, said the Coast Guard is seizing record amounts of cocaine for the third year in a row.“I’m proud of the hard work and dedication of my crew, as well as the crews of Coast Guard Cutters Bear, Diligence, Harriet Lane, Venturous and the joint and interagency personnel who work hand-in-hand to secure our nation,” said Capt. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Two San Diego-based U.S. Navy SEALs have been charged in connection with the 2017 execution of a detainee in Iraq.SEAL officials told the Navy Times that Lt. Jacob "Jake" Portier faces an Article 32 hearing on suspicion of covering up a string of war crimes allegedly committed by Special Operations Chief Edward "Eddie" Gallagher.The Naval Criminal Investigative Service probe involves the death of a wounded Islamic State fighter near Mosul, Iraq in May 2017, the Navy Times reported.Prosecutors allege Gallagher stabbed and killed the wounded man, posed for a photograph next to the body and opted to complete his re-enlistment ceremony next to the corpse, bringing "discredit upon the armed forces."Gallagher is also accused of shooting two non-combatants in separate incidents near Mosul, the Navy Times reported.An MCAS Miramar spokesman could not immediately be reached for comment.Gallagher was arrested on Sept. 11 and is being detained at the Naval Consolidated Brig Miramar at the Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, under Rules for Court-Martial 305, the Navy Times reported.Portier, who is accused of dereliction of duty, was not present at the time of the alleged killing, the Navy Times reported.
