SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The Christ United Methodist Church's Safe Harbors Network needs help to prepare for the next wave of migrants approaching the US-Mexico border.The network, started in 2016, provides basic necessities for refugees, such as a bed, shower, food, clothes, medical care and legal aide, until their court date."They don't have anything, they have the clothes they're wearing, they don't have phones, they don't have money, they would be homeless, so we take them in," Volunteer Kathryn LaPointe said.In 2016 the majority of their refugees were Haitian, over the past several months they're mostly women and children from Central America."We're taking in between 20 and 30 a night the past few days, most of them were able to send to their families, but I would like to help more people," LaPointe said.Sunday, LaPointe said they're at capacity and need all the help they can get. "Every person that walks in front of me, I ask for a building," she said laughing, "can you please get me a building."The network is comprised of individuals, congregations and organizations who care for refugees. "[Provide] basic human kindness, and," LaPointe said as she sighed heavily, "I am so grateful to be able to do that to extend that kindness and I would like to extend that kindness to more people." 1347

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The next great food craze could come from the waters of the San Diego Bay. A pair of scientists is planting a seaweed farm in the bay, to test the plant's marketability for use as food, animal feed, fertilizer, and bio-fuel."Kelp is the new kale," says Torre Polizzi, one of the owners of Sunken Seaweed.Polizzi and his partner Leslie Booher just got a 7,000 grant from the Port of San Diego to start a test-farm in the bay. "We're incredibly optimistic, we believe in ocean optimism, and we're looking forward to really developing this sector."The seaweed industry can be incredibly lucrative. "They're wildly supportive of using kelp and seaweed in their dishes."The farm will be entirely underwater and be filled with several species of seaweed. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The California Department of Public Health is warning the public after a recall was issued for nearly 50,000 pounds of sausage products due to contamination.According to the department, the products may contain pieces of white, hard plastic. Eddy Packaging Co. Inc. recalled the smoked sausage products due to the contamination.The products were sold at Walmart stores in San Diego, Chula Vista, National City, Oceanside, Poway, Santee and La Mesa.The products being recalled have the establishment number "EST. 4800" inside the USDA mark of inspection. The products were also shipped to food service and retail locations in Georgia, Illinois, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas. So far, there have been no reports of illness due to the products. Check below for a list of products or click here for a full list of locations where the products were sold: 888

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The Last Real Gym on North Park’s University Avenue took to the streets immediately after it became illegal to operate indoors in mid-July.The whole experiment lasted five days.“The sidewalks are pretty dirty between dog poop, dog pee … and human poop from the homeless sleeping on my side of the building,” owner Frank Kole said Friday.Kole decided to move everything back indoors in defiance of the Gov. Newsom’s July 13 health order meant to slow the spread of the coronavirus.RELATED: Former member of The Gym in Pacific Beach shares experience“Indoors I'm able to bleach, sanitize, wipe after every single use on the equipment that a member uses, and there's not a homeless person or a dog coming by to pee on it in between that,” Kole said.Kole said he's taking serious measures to keep people safe indoors, with hand sanitizing stations, plexiglass barriers, directional walking signs, and instructions to wipe down equipment.And also, no mask, no access.“I'm not going to lie, I'm not being nice about it,” Kole said. “If you're not wearing your mask, get out.
