But the pandemic hasn't only led to a spike in families planning out their estates, it's also changed the way couples are looking at end-of-life care.“What we’ve seen is this heightened sense of awareness of people’s mortality, which has created a heightened sense of urgency in the market, explained Denise McCarthy, an estate attorney in the Boston area.“I don’t think people have thought about ventilators the way they’re thinking about them now.”McCarthy is now recommending couples write in COVID-19 specific language to their wills, like what to do if one spouse ends up on a ventilator. She also says it's important to appoint a healthcare proxy, clearly putting a spouse or family member in charge of your medical care. An irate homeowner in Louisiana who armed himself with a handgun and chased down a group of teenagers after they rolled his house is behind bars for aggravated assault.The armed confrontation came in response to what Mandeville Police Chief Gerald Sticker said was the group of teens “yearly ritual of ‘rolling or toilet papering’ of homes of fellow students” in the early morning hours of October 27.Craig Scott apparently didn’t think it was funny.Scott armed himself with a semiautomatic handgun and chased down the group of teens, according to Sticker.After he caught up to the group in another section of the neighborhood, Scott pulled his vehicle across the road to block their exit, got out, and confronted the teens with his handgun.Scott was arrested on November 2 and charged with aggravated assault with a firearm and obstruction of a roadway.“Though he had ample opportunity, Mr. Scott never once called 911 or requested police assistance,” Sticker said. “The end clearly did not justify the means this situation.”The teens still may face charges, since “rolling” a house is technically considered criminal mischief, according to Sticker. 1163

An Uber Eats driver wanted in connection with the fatal shooting of a customer over the weekend shot the victim in self-defense, the suspect's attorney said Monday.Robert Bivines, 36, turned himself in to authorities around 3 p.m. on Monday after police secured a warrant for his arrest on a felony murder charge, Atlanta Police said.Bivines was arrested and taken to the Fulton County Jail and booked on charges related to the killing of Ryan Thornton, 30, of Atlanta.Police said the shooting happened about 11:30 p.m. Saturday in the city's Buckhead neighborhood after the victim, identified by the Fulton County medical examiner's office as Thornton, placed a food order via his smartphone app."The victim went down to meet the driver, received his order and began walking away from the vehicle," police said. "As the victim was walking away, it appears words may have been exchanged between he and the delivery driver. So, when you talk about electives, they're really not all that discretionary and we’re really concerned in the period that we shut down all non-emergent procedures that there was a deferral of care,” said Pollack. “We do hear, anecdotally, that the people that are coming back are in a much sicker position because they didn’t get the care that they needed.”Pollack says in order for the healthcare industry to recover, they're going to need a lot of help from the federal government."There's no question, if we don't get the additional assistance it will put the financial viability of a lot of hospitals at risk, particularly in rural areas and vulnerable urban areas," said Pollack.As possibly the biggest industry in the country that's been on the front lines of treating COVID-19, hospitals hope they're one of the first to get major federal help so that the healthcare industry can survive this pandemic. 2909
