Parents might be anxious and apprehensive for back to school, but so many kids are ready.“The next month might be the longest month we’ve had waiting for school to come back,” said Carrie Rea, laughing.Rea is a mother of four in Akron — two kids at St. Vincent-St. Mary, two at St. Sebastian. They are in ninth grade, sixth grade, fourth grade, and first grade. Her hands are full — but her thinking is straightforward as back-to-school begins.“Make sure we’re flexible so that our kids are flexible because we are going to be the dictators of how our kids feel,” Rea said. “Even if we feel a certain way, that we just roll with the punches and don’t let our kids sense our own frustration because they need to learn.”One thing that might frustrate parents is school supply shopping — so different this year than ever before."The number one thing you’re going to need this year are masks, right?” said Rachel Krych, who runs the blog “Couponing with Rachel.”She said every store has masks readily available now, at all price points. From bulk buys on Amazon to mix and match at Old Navy.“Also your neighbor down the street probably makes homemade masks so I think masks in general, you’ll be able to find a lot of,” Krych said. She also says to look for what are called “loss leaders” to save some cash on common things on the supply list.“Loss leaders are a drastically reduced item that you can buy every week at every store and they’re usually about 5 to 10 of these,” Krych said. “For instance, like 25 cent crayons or a five-pack of glue sticks.”If you have your list and shop those loss leaders specifically over the next three or four weeks, you’ll be able to stock up at better prices. As for where to buy — Krych said the big names have the best deals — Target, Walmart, Meijer’s, Marc’s, Staples, even Aldis. You might also need to add a sturdy backpack to the list since Krych said she’s seen some schools implementing “no-locker” rules. For Carrie and her kids, back to school also means practicing things that aren’t on the syllabus.Constant hand washing at home so they’re ready in class, trying on different masks to make sure they fit and are comfortable, and even rethinking what we’ve always been taught — sharing is caring.“We had to parent in a totally different way and say ‘You’re not being mean - but for the time being, you have to keep whatever you have It’s yours and you have to keep it to yourself.’” Rea explained. “Still be polite and mannerly to everyone around you, but understand you can’t share.”And when it comes to things like disinfectant wipes and hand sanitizer, several districts in Northeast Ohio tell News 5 they hope parents can contribute but understand if they can’t. Districts have already put in mass orders for them if they plan to return to classroom learning.WEWS' Homa Bash first reported this story. 2853

p.p1 {margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 14.0px Helvetica}span.s1 {font-kerning: none}San Diego law enforcement officers are tapping into a nationwide database that uses a bullet's ‘fingerprint' to track crimes. The distinct markings left on a shell casing after it's fired provide an image that can be traced back to the gun from which the bullet was shot. There's an Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives technology called National Integrated Ballistic Information Network, or NIBIN.The national digital database houses 3.3 million images of casings left at crime scenes all over the country.San Diego County, state and federal agencies can enter a casing and find out within 24 hours if there's a match in the system."We're catching the fingerprint from the firearm," said ATF Intelligence Specialist Tom Chimileski. If they get a hit, those identical spent shell casings have linked two different crimes to the same gun.ATF Special Agent Jeff Rice, who works with local police and Sheriff's units in San Diego County, calls the sharing of ballistic information "a game changer."Rice works with Escondido Police Gang Unit Detective Nicholas Rodelo on gun crime cases. They took 10News Anchor Kimberly Hunt to the scene of a March 2016 murder case in Escondido.Surveillance video caught the car in an alley off Escondido Blvd. creeping toward the street, as the shooter stalked a rival gang member. After the shooter got out of his car and gunned down the man in the middle of a busy street, there were 12 shell casings left at the scene. The casings were collected and put into the NIBIN system. In the 24-hour window before the digital search could reveal a lead, the pair got a tip on where the gun could be. They recovered it and found the serial number was obliterated.Rice and Rodelo went to San Diego Sheriff's Department Criminologist Scott Hoopes for his expertise in serial restoration.Hoopes told 10News the metal underneath the serial number still reacts to certain acids. Even though it's completely smooth on the surface, Hoopes can sometimes manipulate the acid reactions and bring the number back. That's what Hoopes did with the gun. These technologies are putting a bull's eye on the bad guys. The NIBIN system's images have led to 110,000 hits giving investigators a wealth of knowledge from seemingly unrelated crimes, sometimes from the other side of the country, now connected by a firearm."Jurisdictions can't talk to each other but within our NIBIN system we're able to figure that out," said ATF Special Agent Jeff Rice. These hits allow investigators to get surveillance video, the makes of cars, license plates, or other pieces of evidence from one scene and use it in the other cases involving that same gun. That gets law enforcement much closer to finding the shooter and making the arrest.  See Kimberly Hunt's full report: 2873

PARADISE, Calif. (KGTV) -- More than a month after that Camp Fire, devastation is still visible in all directions throughout the town of Paradise. The Spirit of Liberty Foundation flew up from Carlsbad with Santa to help people forget for just a moment. Spreading smiles with gifts. For some at the Silver Dollar Fairgrounds turned Red Cross shelter, the event was enough to bring them to tears. Half an hour away at the Pine Ridge Elementary School, young men in the California Conservation Corps handed out hats donated by the NFL. The Butte County Sheriff’s Office also joined in, handing out ornaments from the White House, more stuffed animals from the San Diego Zoo, gift cards and more. Helping start new family traditions to replace those lost in the fire. 773

Police arrested an 18-year-old man Saturday morning in the port area of Dover in connection with an attack a day earlier on a train at a London Underground station, London's Metropolitan Police said.It was a "significant arrest" as the investigation continues, Deputy Assistant Commissioner Neil Basu, the senior national coordinator for counterterrorism policing, said in a statement."This arrest will lead to more activity from our officers. For strong investigative reasons, we will not give any more details on the man we arrested at this stage," he said. 567
