UNITED NATIONS, Dec. 16 (Xinhua) -- China on Thursday voiced its hope that parties in the north and south Sudan will make continuous efforts for a peaceful, free, transparent and just referenda in Sudan in accordance with the 2005 Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA), and called for international efforts to create favorable conditions for the January referenda.The statement came as Yang Tao, the counsellor of the Chinese Permanent Mission to the United Nations, was addressing an open Security Council meeting on Sudan."We hope the north and south Sudan will keep up the momentum, speed up the preparation for the referenda and ensure that the referenda are conducted in a peaceful, free, transparent and just manner in accordance with the CPA," Yang said.A referendum on self-determination for southern Sudan is scheduled to be conducted on Jan. 9, 2011, as it was stipulated in the CPA inked between north and south Sudan in 2005, which ended a two-decade civil war between the two sides."We call on the international community to create a favorable condition for the referenda and refrain from prejudging the outcome," he said. "No party should take unilateral action. No matter what outcome of the referenda might be, peace and stability in Sudan and the region must be ensured."Inhabitants of the south will vote on Jan. 9, 2011 on whether to secede from Sudan or remain united with the rest of the country. On the same day, residents of Abyei, located in the center of the country, will vote separately on whether to retain Abyei's special administrative status in the north or become part of Bahr el- Ghazal state in the south.Since the Security Council held the high-level open meeting on Sudan last month, the peace process in Sudan continues to register positive progress, Yang noted."Voter registration for the referenda for southern Sudan has been concluded smoothly, we commend the north and south Sudan, the African Union and the UN Secretariat for the efforts to this end," he said."Maintaining the peace, stability and development in Sudan is in the interest of the Sudanese people, and it is also conducive to the peace and development in the region and in the African continent," Yang said."China hopes that the north and south will cherish the peace that was hard to come by, and continue their equal dialogue and consultation in order to reach an early agreement on the border demarcation, Abyei and wealth sharing and other outstanding issues, " he said. "This is of great significance to the maintenance of the long-term peace and stability in Sudan and the region."

LAS VEGAS, the United States, Jan. 7 (Xinhua) -- China is incredibly important to the success of the global consumer electronics industry, Gary Shapiro, president and CEO of the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) told Xinhua in an interview."There is no doubt that China is a growing powerhouse. China is a global leader in manufacturing and the 'made in China' phrase is known around the world. Chinese manufacturing facilities provide jobs and spur growth not just in China, but around the world as more international companies explore doing business in China," Shapiro said during the 2011 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES), which was organized by CEA.The 2011 International CES kicked off here on Thursday with more than 2,700 exhibitors unveiling their latest technology innovations, up from the 2010 CES which featured 2,500 exhibitors. A total of 267 exhibitors from China, including major companies such as Haier and Hisense, will display their products at the show.According to CEA and market research company Gfk research, China is expected to contribute 13 percent of global CE retail revenue in 2010, up from 12 percent in 2009."The Chinese consumer technology market is also critical to the success of the International CES," Shapiro said. "China also ranked 3rd in terms of international attendance at the 2010 CES, with 1,105 Chinese industry professionals."However, while a leader in manufacturing, to become a true world leader China must produce innovative companies with brands that are recognized around the world, Shapiro cautioned."In fact, not one Chinese company is included on the Interbrand annual listing of the top 100 global brands. BEIJING, Nov. 25 (Xinhua) -- China on Thursday again called on the relevant parties to make joint efforts to safeguard peace and stability of the Korean Peninsula.Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei made the remarks at a regular press briefing.The Republic of Korea (ROK) and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) exchanged artillery fire Tuesday in waters off the west coast of the Korean Peninsula, leaving four people dead.Hong initially expressed China's stance Wednesday with regard to the exchange of fire between the ROK and the DPRK.On Thursday, Hong again called on parties involved to stay calm and exercise restraint, and urged the ROK and DPRK to engage in dialogue and refrain from similar actions.China has always maintained that the relevant parties resolve disputes through negotiations and by peaceful means and be committed to safeguarding peace and stability in the Korean Peninsula, Hong said.China opposed any acts that harmed the peace and stability of the Korean Peninsula, he went on."It is very urgent and important to restart the six-party talks at the current stage," Hong said, adding China had maintained close contact with all the parties involved, including the United States.He said China hoped parties involved could make concerted efforts to properly handle their concerns through talks and consultation within the framework of the six-party talks, which involved China, the DPRK, the United States, the ROK, Russia and Japan.China would like to make concerted efforts with all parties to help ease tension, seek peace and stability in the Korean Peninsula, Hong said.With respect to the planned joint military drill between the United States and the ROK in waters off the west coast of the Korean Peninsula from Nov.28 to Dec. 1, Hong said China was concerned."China holds a consistent and clear stance on the issue," Hong said without elaborating.
