ANCHORAGE, Sept. 12 (Xinhua) -- Top Chinese legislator Wu Bangguo on Saturday met with Alaska Governor Sean Parnell here before winding up his week-long official goodwill visit to the United States. Wu, chairman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress, said he was glad to have Alaska as the final stop in his visit to the United States. Apart from meeting with U.S. government and parliament officials, Wu said he also conducted comprehensive contacts with people from all walks of life in the U.S. during his stay. The major topics included how to strengthen the Sino-U.S. cooperation, how to join hands to face challenges and how to realize common development of the two countries, Wu said. At the invitation of U.S. Speaker of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi, Wu started to visit the U.S. on Sept. 6. His trip to the United States was the first official visit to America by a top Chinese legislator in the past two decades. Wu met with U.S. President Barack Obama, Vice President Joe Biden and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton during the stay. Before visiting the Unites States, Wu has visited Cuba and the Bahamas.
PINGYAO, Shanxi, Sept. 19 (Xinhua) -- A photo exhibition exclusively dedicated to Canadian surgeon Henry Norman Bethune opened Saturday at the Pingyao International Photography Festival in north China's Shanxi Province. Bethune is a household name in China, a country where he saved numerous lives and sacrificed his own in 1939 during China's War of Resistance Against Japanese aggression. "He is noble-minded and pure, a man of moral integrity and above vulgar interests, a man who is of value to the people," Chairman Mao wrote in his article In Memory of Norman Bethune. The exhibition consists of 41 photos of Dr. Bethune living and working in China, some of which had never been shown before. "As Canadians, we are all proud to be associated with this visionary adventurer and deeply touched by the respect and recognition shown to him here in China," said Canadian Ambassador to China, David Mulroney. Most of the pictures were provided by Wang Yan, daughter of ShaFei, who was a forefather of China's news photography and a close friend of Bethune. "I remember that I was touched when I first read about Bethune in my school days and now it feels like looking at the pictures of an old friend who has just passed away," said visitor Wu Jun. "Many people love Bethune for they have learnt his deeds and spirit in Chairman Mao's article while my affection for him comes from his friendship with my father," Wang said. "Bethune was my father's mentor as he exemplified the essence of communism." Upon his death Bethune left his Kodak Retina camera to Sha Fei. Bethune also healed Japanese soldiers, took pictures of them, which were sent back to Japan. "He wished the Japanese people would protest against the war when they saw how their sons were suffering on battlefield. He was a true humanist," Wang said. Just before he died, Bethune wrote in a letter, saying that the last two years (those he spent in China) have been the most significant, the most meaningful years of his life.
BEIJING, Aug. 29 (Xinhua) -- Drink or drive? This is a dilemma for many Chinese in a society soaked in a centuries-old drinking culture which is now travelling in private motor cars. For Liu Kun, a 25-year-old media worker in Beijing, the choice is simple and there is only one answer - she won't even have a sip of beer before she drives. "I didn't treat it (drink driving) seriously before," said Liu, who has been driving for three years. "But now I obey the rules strictly." Liu is one of many Chinese motorists sobering up and thinking twice about their onetime drinking and driving. This situation has been brought about by a spate of serious drink driving accidents in China, including fatalities. The situation has sparked a public outcry. Chinese police launched a two-month nationwide crackdown against driving under the influence (DUI) two weeks ago, following a series of shocking cases in which drunk drivers killed pedestrians. By Friday, 28,880 drivers had been caught and punished for DUI, the Ministry of Public Security said. Kong Linnan, a 25-year-old Beijing resident, said: "Drink drivers should be severely penalized. They are irresponsible about their own lives, let alone others." Besides changing attitudes, the crackdown has brought about an unexpected boom to once sluggish businesses, such as drive-home services that help carry home drinkers by contracting relief drivers. He Jin, chief executive of the Beijing Benaoanda Drive-back Company, said his company had carried home more than 110 customers every day in the past week, 20 times more than five years ago when his service was established. The company charges 80 yuan (12 U.S. dollars) for each journey. Now about seven or eight companies in Beijing are providing similar services, He said. "Taking a cab is a cheaper way to carry a drinker back home. But many taxi drivers are rather reluctant to do it," said He. Zhang Changyun, a Beijing taxi driver, said, "They always throw up in my cab. It's nasty. I can't use my cab for the whole day." Zhang always refuses to carry those who have been drinking heavily. He often did not handle drinking well, but often had his arm twisted to drink alcohol at business banquets. Yi Rong, Gao's wife, said that tighter DUI law enforcement helped lessen the worries of drivers' families. "I'm so happy that China's alcohol culture is starting to change," said Yi. BOOMS AND WORRIES Alcohol-free beer is also doing well because of the crackdown. Many restaurants now sell this beer which contains less ethyl alcohol. Yu Li, manager of Veganhut, a health restaurant in Beijing's Central Business District, said, "We sell only alcohol-free beer and it's selling well. It's a new trend in dining." Ding Guangxue, deputy chief executive of the Yanjing Beer Group, said the brewerery's output of alcohol-free beer was more than 4 million bottles this month, registering a 10 percent year-on-year increase. But alcohol-free beer is not totally free from ethanol. "Two bottles may raise your blood alcohol to the limit," said Ding. The crackdown is also worrying China's catering industry which makes large profits out of liquor, since beer sold at a restaurant can be priced four times higher than in a supermarket. Zhang Zhenjiang, general secretary of Beijing Association for Liquor and Spirits Circulation, said, "We're worried that tighter control could dent profits and raise costs." "Alcohol-free has only a small share of sales. It cannot replace ordinary liquor," said Zhang. On the Internet, some netizens are suggesting restaurants be obliged to dissuade their driving customers from drinking. But Fu Guiping, a corporate lawyer with Beijing Huatian Catering Group, said liquor outlets had no power or obligation to manage affairs that should be carried by the law enforcement sector. BEIJING, Sept. 27 (Xinhua) -- Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC), the country's top aircraft manufacturer, said Sunday total sales revenue in its auto business would reach 30 billion yuan (about 4.39 billion U.S. dollars) by 2017. Geng Ruguang, deputy general manager of AVIC, said making big passenger vehicles has become the the corporations's guiding plan for development in its auto business. Geng revealed the figure at a ceremony marking AVIC and its partner Volvol's new product Silver 900 series going into production line. The series is a new type of big and luxurious passenger vehicles, 12 meters long, which could be used for road transportation, tourist reception, and military equipment. The Silver 900 series was developed by Xi'an Silver Bus Corporation, a joint venture established in 1994 by AVIC Xi'an Aircraft Industry Co. ltd, and the Swedish bus and truck maker Volvo company. BEIJING, Sept. 29 (Xinhua) -- China attaches great importance to U.S. President Barack Obama's visit in November, a senior Chinese official told visiting U.S. Deputy Secretary of State James Steinberg in Beijing Tuesday. State Councilor Dai Bingguo said China would work with the U.S. to ensure the success of this visit. Steinberg, who arrived in China Monday, said President Obama was looking forward to his visit, and hoped it would promote U.S.-China relations. Dai said relations between the two countries had developed vigorously with close exchanges and cooperation since the Obama administration took office. The two sides should work together for the continuous and steady development of bilateral ties, Dai said. A key mission of Steinberg's China trip is to prepare for Obama's visit. It is part of the senior U.S. diplomat's week-long tour of Asia, which also takes him to Hanoi, Kuala Lumpur, Seoul and Tokyo. He said Obama considered his meeting with President Hu Jintao in New York last week had given an impetus to bilateral ties. Obama's visit would "mark an important milestone in building mutual trust and respect between the people of China and the United States," said a statement from the U.S. Embassy in Beijing late Tuesday on his departure from China. Steinberg said President Obama had several times stressed the great importance of U.S.-China relations since he took office in January. The United States hoped to reveal to the world through President Obama's China visit that the two countries were willing to jointly respond to global challenges, including the global financial crisis, terrorism and non-proliferation, he said. Xi called on joint efforts from both countries to ensure "positive results" from Obama's China tour. "President Hu Jintao had successful meeting with President Obama in New York last week, in which they reached new important consensus on promoting active, all-round development of bilateral ties," said Xi. "China is ready to work closely with the United States to implement the important consensus reached by the two heads of state, enhance strategic trust and substantial cooperation in various areas, and properly handle differences and sensitive issues," Xi said.
