SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego Gas & Electric this week turned off power to tens of thousands of customers due to high wind conditions, but almost three days into the shutoff, some customers say they’re running out of options and need their power back now.East County resident Cynthia Chisum told ABC 10News, “It isn’t fun. Their big problem is the freezer -- without any power, their food is close to rotting.“We have a freezer full of fish that my husband caught during a fishing trip and we hate for all that to go spoiled,” Chisum said.Chisum said it was windy Wednesday night, but since then it’s been calm. That’s why she believes her power should be restored quickly.SDG&E posted an update on their website laying out their restoration plans, saying “crews are conducting visual inspections of each impacted circuit to determine whether there were any wind related damage before power can be restored.”The utility also said crews are looking for safety hazards such as downed lines, debris or tree branches caught in power lines. If no damage is found, power can be restored quickly.For those impacted by the outages, SDG&E has set up drive-thru resource centers where customers can get water and snacks or charge devices. 1646
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego City Council was recently warned about the damage an earthquake can cause to the region, specifically on the county's water system."Strengthen their water system, make that long-term investment," seismologist Lucy Jones said of the city's aging water infrastructure. This month, a break to an 8-inch diameter concrete main left dozens of Hillcrest residents without water.In October, a water main break to a 90-year-old, 24-inch water transmission line in North Park flooded several streets with thousands of gallons of water. A water main break occurred in the same area in January 2017 as well.Water main breaks last August in Mission Hills, Point Loma, the Midway District, and Spring Valley also left residents and businesses without water. As of August, there had been at least 29 water main breaks around the county in 2018.Since 2013, San Diego has spent about 8 million repairing and replacing 116 miles of water transmission lines and distribution pipes, according to city documents. Though, the city still has more than 3,000 miles of pipeline to replace, San Diego Pulbic Utilities Department spokesperson Brent Eidson told 10News in August."To do it properly, we're probably always going to be replacing pipes," Eidson said.Buildings and BridgesWhen it comes to older structures throughout the county, it comes down to what standards were used when constructing a building.Geologist Pat Abbott says California has been proactive about preparing for earthquakes — he applauded the upgrades made to the Coronado Bay Bridge."You have an upright here and a horizontal road bed and they don't shake the same way," Abbott said of bridge construction. Dating back to the 1950s, it will soon be replaced with two parallel bridges with three travel lanes in both directions, including bike lanes. A recent study from HotPads, a Zillow-owned site, says San Diegans can pay ,270 per year in overlooked costs and fees that come with moving. The includes security and pet deposits, pet rent and parking. The biggest chunk comes from the security deposit, which is typically one month's rent. In all, it works out to an additional 6 per month. "As rent prices continue to rise and rent affordability remains a concern, it is important for renters to consider all their potential expenses before planning a move," said Joshua Clark, economist at HotPads. "There's all kinds of things they might charge you for at move-in, so you want to be sure to check before you sign anything," she said. Steingrebe focuses largely on downtown, renting out privately owned condos. She says some buildings even require tenants hire move-in coordinators to make sure things go smoothly and not disturb other residents. Renters don't pay the HOA directly, but landlord's can pass along any sort of fines or violations they commit. "Unauthorized moves, these buildings downtown, you can't just walk in with your couch, you have to schedule it," Steingrebe said, adding dumping trash inappropriately can also lead to fines. The biggest financial issues that arise for renters come at the end of a lease, when it comes to getting a security deposit refunded, Steingrebe said. She said the best defense is to document with photos and text any damage or issues that occur throughout the year, starting with an initial move-in inspection. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego Police have identified the victim and suspect involved in a deadly downtown stabbing on July 1.According to police, 43-year-old Canthon E. Tripplett was stabbed on the 400 block of Fifth Avenue around 2:30 a.m.When they arrived, officers found a companion of the man providing first aid. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego is among 25 counties throughout the nation at risk for a measles outbreak, according to a new report. According to the University of Texas, a paper published in the Lancet Infectious Diseases warns that the epidemic will worsen. The analysis considered a county’s volume of international travel from foreign countries as well as non-medical exemptions for children.
