SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - In an effort to drive environmentally-friendly urban commuting, bike and scooter sharing companies have rolled into San Diego County — creating some headaches along the way. With the travel alternative, though, has come a glimpse into a greener future for congested roadways.Though in San Diego since February, ofo officially joined the city's expanding field of dockless bike and scooter options Monday. The company joins competing options Bird, LimeBike, MoBike, and DecoBike. RELATED: Thousands taking advantage of dockless bikes, scooters"Having ofo in San Diego is a boon for our region,” Colin Parent, Executive Director for Circulate San Diego, said. "As transportation advocates, we welcome ofo to San Diego as an innovative solution to meeting San Diego’s environmental goals and providing transportation options."Riders simply download the ofo mobile app, scan the QR code on the bike to unlock it, and they're on their way. Rides run an hour, according to ofo. When finished, riders safely — and legally — park the bike and manually lock it to end the trip.Safely and legally means placing the bike out of the way of traffic and people walking or biking themselves.RELATED: Unique bike app Limebike rolls out in Imperial BeachThe Boardwalk stretching from Mission Bay to Pacific Beach is a prime example of both the pitfalls and ease of use, as users glide along but also run into congestion among walkers, runners, and skateboarders.Witnesses have told 10News they've seen scooter riders not wearing a helmet and people riding where they're not supposed to, in addition to bikes left only to block others.San Diego Police said the dockless bike and scooter movement is so new they haven't had the ability yet to issue citations and track riders. How do you feel about San Diego's bike- and scooter-sharing boon? SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Local and federal authorities are asking for the public’s help in finding a father suspected of abducting his two children and fleeing to Mexico.Authorities said on Jan. 12, 2019, Foong Lian Chin’s ex-wife dropped off their two sons, with the understanding that he would return them to her on the following day. However, when Chin did not return the kids, the ex-wife “called law enforcement to check Chin’s address” but “there was no answer at his house.” Law enforcement also tried to reach Chin by phone but could not get a hold of him.On Jan. 16, 2019, a court gave Chin’s ex-wife full custody of the couple’s children and an arrest warrant was issued for Chin. Authorities said the million warrant is for parental child abduction.According to authorities, investigators learned Chin took his sons -- 8-year-old Huaiyu Chin and 7-year-old Binyu Chin -- to Mexico.Chin, who immigrated to the U.S. from Singapore in the 1980s, has lived in New York, Southern California, and Baja California.Chin and his sons were believed to have last been spotted in Tijuana, Mexico.Chin is Asian, 47 years old, 5 feet 8 inches tall, and weighs 130 pounds. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Images of burning homes, helicopters and flames are now a regular occurrence in California. This summer, that wildfire threat became real for the Del Cerro community.“We could hear the exploding palm trees, we could smell the toxic, frightening smoke," remembers Glenn Thomas, Vice Chair of Friends of Del Cerro. The group wanted to do something to pay back firefighters for all they do for the community. They wanted to know what the department needs to help firefighters do their job better. “We believe you find out what people want and you give it to them!” said Thomas.Friends of Del Cerro teamed up with the San Diego Fire Rescue Foundation to make something happen. What the department needs, Thomas learned, is more wildland firefighting hand tools. While these tools are currently on brush trucks, the department wants them on every engine.“There are so many more vegetation fires, and they grow so much bigger now," said Deputy Chief Steve Wright. “Something we needed that’s going to be a force-multiplier on vegetation fires that we didn’t have the immediate budget for."The group plans to raise ,000 for the tools and is halfway there thanks to a generous donation from the Padres. If you'd like to help, donate here. 1261

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — It was an unforgettable Christmas surprise for 30 Tierrasanta elementary school students Friday.Officers from the San Diego Unified Police Department presented them with brand new bicycles. Most of the students from Hancock Elementary are part of military families and have a parent deployed this holiday season. RELATED: Padres players surprise San Diego elementary school students with new bikesThe gifts were part of the district's True Blue Buddies program, which pairs am officer as a mentor to a student."We're more than just a uniform," said officer John Ross. "We're people too, we have kids, but we want to make them feel good about the law enforcement connection."Originally, two students were awarded with bikes but then the remaining 28 got the surprise that they would be getting bikes too. 829

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — It's the first official day of Comic-Con 2020! This year though, there are no superheroes or villains in the Gaslamp District, as the convention is entirely online. But many say they are perks of the Convention going virtual. Instead of going to Comic-Con, this year, Comic-Con comes to you.First thing's first. Print out your badge, just to make it feel official. This year, the Convention even created a new pet attendee option!Next, log onto the free online panels. Thursday's line-up included video presentations by anime superhouse, Crunchyroll, zoom-style discussions with artists and producers, as well as a read-through and Q&A sessions with the star-studded cast of the Star Trek Universe. The event was a true Hall H experience, minus the Hall H.RELATED: San Diego's hospitality industry suffers from Comic-Con@Home"As somebody who has parents that were in the Holocaust, you have to make the best of a situation. And that's what we did," panelist, Sandra Scheller, said.Since 2018, the South Bay resident has hosted "The Art and the Holocaust" panel, where she shares stories and art of her late mother, Ruth Sax. Though there was no audience interaction this year, she says going virtual does have its perks.Because the panels are uploaded on YouTube, there is no need to choose which panels to attend. There is no missing out if there are many going on at the same time."You can still go on and see it at any time," Scheller said. "If someone wants to go on the panel at two o'clock in the morning, six months from now, you're able to do that. And to use it as an educational tool in the schools. I love that!"WHAT TO KNOW: Panels, exclusives, activities for San Diego Comic-Con@HomePerhaps the biggest downside to Comic-Con going virtual may be felt by the cosplayers. They are unable to show off their creations. But there are some things that can ONLY be done virtually, like giving cosplay costumes the Hollywood treatment."They [Cosplayers] can still get their work and effort and their creativity seen online, just by making a video," Chris Kelly, CEO of Productioncrate LLC, said. "I think the best way to bring it to the next level is to add superpowers if you're a superhero."Productioncrate LLC is a visual effects company out of Kearny Mesa. Through their free or premium subscription service, users can instantly make their videos "more awesome," as Kelly said. During this quarantine, he says 800,000 users are doing just that.PHOTOS: Best cosplay from San Diego Comic-Con"Because you're at home, why not take advantage of it?" Kelly asked. "Learn a new skill-set, learn how to edit video, and have the coolest video anyone's ever seen!"We asked Kelly if he can give a five-second clip of his interview with ABC 10News, the 'superhero feel.' Within minutes, he was able to add special effects, including lightning, fire, and music onto the clip.Comic-Con encourages attendees to check out the virtual booths. Take a moment to shop online for exclusive merchandise to keep small vendors in business. 3055
