SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- With a string of recent fires in San Diego County and statewide, it’s no secret that so-called fire season, which California fire agencies say is now year round, is getting worse.So far this year, Cal Fire has battled nearly 3,800 wildfires that have so far scorched more than 292,000 acres.That figure shows a sharp increase from previous years and is far above average for this time of year.According to Cal Fire, the last five years have, on average, seen just over 118,800 acres burned statewide by this time."We are seeing more destructive, larger fires burning at rates that we have historically never seen," said Jonathan Cox, Cal Fire regional Battalion Chief.The increasing danger even has agencies like the US Department of Agriculture warning of the risks. As far as major fire incidents, so far this year there have been well over 100. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - With Black Friday signaling the beginning of the holiday shopping season, it is important to be mindful of how to protect your finances from potential thieves. Card skimming is a common method used to steal credit card information, but safeguards can be taken, such as recognizing suspicious ATMs or gas station pumps, or simply paying in cash. The San Diego County division of Agriculture, Weights and Measures released an informational?video in 2017 providing tips on how to protect yourself from card skimmers.If you decide to stick with plastic at the pump, pay attention to signs of tampering, such as the removal of security seals placed over the pump panel door and frame. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)-- A San Diego couple was stuck in Ecuador after the country canceled all travel due to the Coronavirus. After several days of travel, the couple is finally back in their home. A few days ago, Albert "Ace" Elliott was not sure if he and his wife Mindy would ever make it back to their Ocean Beach home. "Without any warning at all, we hear that Ecuador has closed down the country," Elliott said. "No bus travel, no plane travel." For the last ten years, the couple has spent three months of the year in a small surf town in Ecuador. The Elliotts were supposed to fly back on March 31, 2020. But with the pandemic situation, they were stuck. Their flights and back-up flights were all canceled. They called the United States Embassy to see if they could somehow make it home. On Thursday, they were told to leave the next morning. The problem? Ecuador now has a 2 pm to 5 am curfew. Streets and homes are being sprayed down twice a day. Transportation is limited in their rural town. "Ecuador is going after this thing very aggressively. They're not messing around," Elliott said. At 5:01 am Friday, March 27, 2020, they jumped in a taxi. Four hours later, they made it to the airport. "Whether we are on the plane or not, it's just, show up and hope kind of," Elliott said. "So we go up, and our names are on the list. So we were like, OK, we get to go into the airport."They met another American in line, who told them he showed up yesterday, but there was no plane. He became somewhat discouraged. "They said it's a 12 o'clock flight supposedly," Elliott said. "It's 11:30, and there's nothing. Everybody's just sitting around looking, and around the corner, there comes a plane. And we said, Wow! There's a plane!"They were first flown into Miami. But they had no idea how to get back home. When they asked the kiosk for options, it was either 0 to San Diego the next day or to Los Angeles in an hour. They chose the latter."We got to Los Angeles, and from there, we got a rental car and drove home," Elliott sighed. "We made it home."The relief in his voice said it all. Elliott said they were treated well in Ecuador and throughout the trip. But the uncertainty was unbearable. As a surfer, it is difficult to stay away from the beach. But Elliott said for the safety of himself and his community, he will continue to self-quarantine. "I feel pretty confident that we are OK, but we're just going to have to hang out at home again," Elliott said. "Our lives are going to be just about sitting around, but that's what you got to do." 2569

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Video captured shots ringing out, apparently pelting cars in a Rolando neighborhood, including the vehicles of a family already impacted by the pandemic.A shattered windshield is what Ondria Aviles found when she went to her Dodge Journey, parked outside her home along Marraco Drive on Monday night."Just couldn't believe that had happened," said Aviles.Her husband came out and found the driver side window of his truck - also parked on the street - was also shattered."My husband had a BB pellet hole in his window," said Aviles.Turns the moments their vehicles were vandalized were captured by neighbor Ryan Dick's surveillance camera. Just before 7:30 that night, a red sedan was recorded driving through when three shots rang out in a span of three seconds. The final two shots sounded near Aviles' vehicles.According to posts on the Nextdoor app, at least four other cars and homes were struck in a several-mile stretch. "Couldn't imagine if they missed and hit someone, a young child. We have three kids," said Aviles.Along with her outrage, there is frustration. The bill for the window damage will be a hardship. Because of the pandemic, she's been furloughed for several months. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Vandals damaged a park in Sabre Springs Thursday night, dumping sand into toilets and scrawling inappropriate graffiti on the walls. Trash cans were emptied out and piles of wood chips were dumped along the entrance to the South Creek Neighborhood Park. The clogged toilets and sinks caused minor flooding in the bathrooms. Some of the plumbing was also damaged, according to the San Diego Police Department. City crews cleaned up the mess by the afternoon. Police were still searching for the culprits Friday. 537
