SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego State University astronomers played a role in the recent discovery of a third planet within the Kepler-47 planetary system.A team of researchers, led by astronomers from SDSU, discovered a new Neptune-size planet orbiting the system's two suns between two previously discovered planets.The planet, named Kepler-47d, was discovered using a method called, "transit method," according to to university. The method measures a level of brightness to help detect masses. "If the orbital plane of the planet is aligned edge-on as seen from Earth, the planet can pass in front of the host stars, leading to a measurable decrease in the observed brightness," a release from the school describes.RELATED: Researchers share photo of a black hole — the first ever in historyPreviously, the planet's signal was too weak to detect.“We saw a hint of a third planet back in 2012, but with only one transit we needed more data to be sure,” SDSU astronomer Jerome Orosz, the paper’s lead author, said in the release. “With an additional transit, the planet’s orbital period could be determined, and we were then able to uncover more transits that were hidden in the noise in the earlier data.”Kepler-47d is about seven times the size of Earth and takes 87 days to orbit around its suns.“We certainly didn’t expect it to be the largest planet in the system. This was almost shocking,” said William Welsh, SDSU astronomer and the study’s co-author.The entire Kepler-47 system itself is interesting as well. With two suns, it's the only known multi-planet circumbinary system. The system is extremely compact and would fit inside the orbit of Earth. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Some residents picking up trash in a City Heights neighborhood were met by a disturbing sight and an ominous warning near a homeless encampment.Blocks from an elementary school on Fairmont Avenue, Matt Armstrong and a friend collected more than seven bags of trash in a culvert near the small encampment Wednesday. The next day, he and his friend were at it again, when they saw it. In front of a tent and hanging from a limb was a noose and a handmade sign inches away."It says, 'Trespassers will hang by the heads,'" said Armstrong.Armstrong, a black belt, wasn't intimidated, but the warning is one he takes seriously."Something like this sends a message that they will hurt you. There are no rules. It's disconcerting," said Armstrong.The safety issue becoming more prominent the last few years as more and more local residents have reported to 10News about encounters with aggressive transients. Unwilling to back down, Armstrong ventured back into the brush, where several homeless told him the transient who hung the noose wasn't there."They told me it was a joke, but it's not funny to me. People should not feel unsafe in their own neighborhood," said Armstrong.Armstrong also filed a complaint about the noose with the city. We reached out to city officials but have yet to hear back. 1346

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Some workers hit hard by the pandemic are now turning to an entrepreneur program at San Diego Miramar College.In late March, Billie Guinto got word that her job booking events for an event planning agency was put on pause by COVID-19."My first reaction was dread ... If this lasts too long, I'm going to deplete my savings," said Guinto.Guinto tried to sign up for unemployment but has yet to hear back. She renewed her realtor license and then decided to take a chance."I had to pivot quickly, and I knew this program was getting off to a really good start," said Guinto.She enrolled in the summer session of Miramar College's REC Innovation Lab, a year-old incubator program aimed at budding entrepreneurs, especially in underrepresented communities.The now-virtual lab includes courses, pitch sessions, networking, and mentoring. For Guinto, the program is helping her grow her big idea."I decided to create All Source Events, an application for professional event planners," said Guinto.Her app will be a one-stop-shop for event planning, from scheduling to marketing to ticketing. Weeks into the program, she's already pitching to possible investors."By the end of summer, I plan to have a working iteration of the app to hand out to event planners to test and work out the kinks," said Guinto.Guinto is one of the dozens of students, many of them jobless, now following their entrepreneur dreams."My attitude changed tremendously, I am excited, hopeful, and confident.
