SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The Collaborative Clinical Trials Unit at UC San Diego has been selected to lead and administer an international seven-year, million grant for HIV/AIDS clinical trials. The National Institutes of Health selected UCSD, along with other American, South African and Indian research hospitals, as part of its seven-year HIV/AIDS funding renewal. Every seven years, NIH competitively renews its funding of the HIV clinical trials networks operating in the United States and internationally.During the current application process, the UC San Diego AntiViral Research Center, University of Colorado Hospital, Houston AIDS Research Team and Durban International clinical research sites were chosen to work collaboratively on research priorities for the NIH/National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases HIV/AIDS Adult Therapeutics Clinical Trials Network. The Chennai Antiviral Research and Treatment Center, University of Southern California and University of Miami clinical research sites were also chosen to join UCSD to serve as qualified reserve or protocol-specific sites as needed for future clinical trials."UC San Diego has helped shape HIV/AIDS research and treatment through innovative research since the inception of the adult and pediatric therapeutic clinical trials networks in 1986," said principal investigator Dr. Constance A. Benson, director of UCSD's Antiviral Research Center."Together, the seven clinical research sites selected by the NIH for the HIV therapeutic clinical trials network bring together a wealth of scientific expertise, experience and the high quality performance required to conduct complex clinical trials," she said.Abouty 38 million people are living with HIV/AIDS globally, with 1.7 million acquiring HIV in 2019 alone. In the United States, 1.2 million people are living with the virus. The UCSD-led clinical trials unit serves several regions in the United States burdened by chronic and new HIV infections as well as global regions impacted by both HIV and tuberculosis. The unit will investigate therapeutic strategies aimed at a cure for HIV, including evaluating viral persistence, researching antibody approaches to treatment and prevention and investigating treatment of inflammation and its impact on HIV comorbidities. In addition, investigators will study new drugs including long-acting drug formulations for HIV treatment and prevention, HIV-related coinfections and comorbidities -- including metabolic and end organ complications and a hepatitis B cure, as well as the treatment and prevention of tuberculosis, including TB preventive vaccines, in persons with mono- and HIV-coinfection."We are honored to lead a talented pool of investigators in a common goal of advancing research that clinically benefits people living with HIV," Benson said. 2830

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego City Council will take a look at the Riverwalk San Diego project Tuesday, a proposed transit-oriented neighborhood development along the San Diego River in Mission Valley.International real estate firm Hines has proposed the 200-acre project, which is intended to transform the existing Riverwalk golf course into a neighborhood as well as restore the stretch of the San Diego River that runs through it.According to Hines, if the plan is approved Tuesday, the company plans to break ground during the second half of 2021.The San Diego Planning Commission recommended approval of Riverwalk San Diego project on Oct. 22 with five in favor, one abstention and one commissioner absent. The Hines plan includes 4,300 homes -- 10% of which are planned to be affordable housing -- a Metropolitan Transit System Green Line trolley stop, 152,000-square-feet of retail space, 1 million square feet of office space, 100 acres of parks and new bike and pedestrian paths, including an extension of the San Diego River Trail."I think it could be something to set the standard for what transit- oriented development can look like," said San Diego Planning Commissioner Vicki Granowitz. The Riverwalk plan, established through a partnership between Hines and the Levi-Cushman family landowners, incorporates community input gathered over several years by the Hines team in nearly 100 stakeholder and community planning group meetings."We appreciate that the planning commissioners recognized the extensive community outreach and collaboration that helped form our plan and the care we're taking to create an environmentally responsible, transit- oriented legacy project for San Diego," said Eric Hepfer, managing director at Hines. 1754

O (CNS) - On Monday the City Council will discuss and possibly approve spending .8 million so the San Diego Humane Society can take over the city's animal service needs in the upcoming fiscal year.   RELATED: Future of animal services in San Diego up in the airSan Diego County has provided animal services to the city since 1971, but the Board of Supervisors notified the city in May that it will explore outsourcing county Department of Animal Services duties in the fiscal year that begins July 1. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The Board of Supervisors Tuesday directed San Diego County's chief administrative officer to create a stronger wildfire protection plan.By a unanimous vote, the board asked Helen Robbins-Meyer to find ways to expand and more strongly support fire-safe councils, enhance pre-fire vegetation management, improve pre-fire emergency planning, strengthen fire-safety measures in new construction, and reduce loss from wildfires in existing buildings.Robbins-Meyer will work with the Fire Authority, Sheriff's Department and other relevant county departments and outside agencies to present recommendations within 90 days. There are 60,000 homes in the county's unincorporated areas that are at a high risk for wildfire, board Chairwoman Dianne Jacob said. She added that recent rainstorms have made the back country verdant -- but additional vegetation will lead to more danger as fire season begins.RELATED: How to prepare defensible space around your homeThe county has experienced several devastating blazes since 2003, including the Cedar and Witch Creek fires, resulting in more than a dozen fatalities, and billions of dollars in property loss and damage.Supervisor Jim Desmond said an improved wildfire protection plan means the county can ``get ahead of the game.''Residents speaking in favor of the protection plan made several suggestions, including working with a wildfire ecologist, not building urban-type developments in high-fire areas, and encouraging homeowners to reduce brush within 100 feet of their property. 1549

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The guided-missile destroyer USS Pinckney returned to Naval Station San Diego today following a nine-month deployment. Pinckney, along with a detachment from Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron 75, deployed in January with the Theodore Roosevelt Carrier Strike Group to the U.S. 7th Fleet/East Asia/Pacific region. The Pinckney crew in April joined with the U.S. 4th Fleet's Caribbean and Central and South America areas of operation for counternarcotics operations.``The sailors of Pinckney have helped make the United States a safer place to live,'' said Cmdr. Andrew Roy, Pinckney's commanding officer. ``I thank all Pinckney sailors and U.S. Coast Guardsmen who overcame many obstacles to make sure illicit narcotics will never make it into our homes, schools or communities.''During Pinckney's deployment, the crew of the destroyer -- along with an embarked U.S. Coast Guard Law Enforcement Detachment -- recovered 9,800 kilograms of cocaine and 2,800 pounds of marijuana with an estimated wholesale value of 0 million. In addition, Pinckney conducted navigation operations and participated in a passing exercise with the Guatemalan navy.``A lengthy deployment is always challenging, even more so in the midst of a global pandemic that kept us all on the ship for the past six months,'' said Cmdr. Ryan Conole, Pinckney's executive officer. ``Our team was able stay focused and on mission, and we could not have done that without the support of our families and friends back home who were also dealing with an incredibly challenging environment on the homefront.'' 1598
