Some people can't make ends meet, and some people are really struggling,” said Taylor. “And if they're struggling, we struggle, because it's a trickle-down effect. If they're not receiving, then they can't give."Because of the pandemic, this church, like so many across the country, has shifted to online services. The empty pews often translate into near-empty collection baskets, leaving the church’s staff and its programs in a tough spot.“The payroll department has suffered because we don't have no streams of income to really satisfy or to cover that budget,” said the pastor. “It’s been many times that I’ve said, ‘Well I don't know what we're going to do.’”The business behind many churches in the United States is in for a long recovery.The Barna Group found 1 in 3 people who regularly attended church have stopped watching online services, leaving fewer involved parishioners ready to donate.A leader with Lifeway Research, a group studying churches, estimates 5% of churches will close permanently before the end of the year because of COVID-19. That number is five times higher than typical yearly closures.The question of a church’s survival made even heavier by the loss of life many churches have seen. For the Open Door Church of God in Christ, 19 church members have passed away during the pandemic.“We had some ushers that passed away. That was essential. Some nurses that passed away, and just so many members that I loved so much, and I miss each and every one of them,” said Taylor.Many of those church members also substantially supported the church’s finances. Their loss has caused such a ripple effect; Pastor Taylor had to step in to help his congregation.“I had to put in ,000 of my own personal money at one time just to see the payroll get taken care of, and I don't look for it back. I give it from my heart, and whatever I have to do, I give my last to make sure people have,” he said.To make sure this church could survive, a group called Churches Helping Churches also got involved, donating ,000 to this church and others across the nation that offer their community more than a house of worship.“I’m not working, so I’m glad I can come here,” said Maureen Waters. “I’m not hungry anymore, so it’s good.”Pastor Taylor fears if his church can’t serve the community, they will lose something greater than a place to gather."What's at stake is people lose hope, and we don't want people to lose hope," he said. A Florida sheriff's office says it was able to identify a murder victim 35 years after he went missing thanks to the victim's custom belt buckle.According to the Pensacola Journal News, officials with the Escambia County Sheriff's Office said they were successfully able to identify the body of William Ernest Thompson 37 years after he went missing.The WKMG-TV in Orlando reports that the body was found Jan. 23, 1985 about 10 miles northwest of downtown Pensacola. Officials suspected that the man had been dead for months, and possibly more than a year before it had been found.For more than three decades, the department could not find a lead in the case. The suspected murder victim was only identified as "John Doe."It wasn't until 2018, when a person searching for a missing relative, stumbled upon the case on the Escambia County Sheriff's Office (ECSO) website. Knowing their relative had last been seen in Escambia County, the person contacted the department.But authorities said they didn't truly have a lead in the case until the relative noticed the victim's belt buckle, which matched the initials of thier uncle, William Thompson."The thing that stuck out to the person the most was the victim's belt buckle with the hand-engraved initials' W.T." Chief Deputy Chip Simmons of the ECSO said in a Facebook post. "The person felt this could have been their missing uncle, whose last known location was in Escambia County near the same time John Doe's body was discovered."The relative said that while he had never been reported missing, no one in their family had spoken to their uncle, William Thompson, since 1983. Officials took a sample of the tipster's DNA, and compared with the DNA of the body. Test results confirmed the body was that of William Thompson.Thompson would have been 49 when his body was found in 1985."This is another example of the never-ending quest for justice,” ECSO Chief Deputy Chip Simmons said in a written statement. “While we haven’t yet solved the homicide, it is a step forward and can give the family some closure until the case is solved.”The case is still open and being investigated as a homicide. 2155

A limousine company and its owner are under scrutiny after a stretch limousine crashed in upstate New York killing 20 people.For unknown reasons, the 2001 Ford Excursion, operated by Prestige Limousine Chauffer Service, plowed through a stop sign and crashed into a parked SUV in Schoharie, New York, last Saturday. A Lyft driver accused of sexually assaulting a customer on April 24 has been arrested, police say.The woman told police that she had been sexually assaulted in the city of Pontiac, Michigan. At 5 p.m. on April 24, the victim contacted a Lyft driver she had previously used. The driver claimed he was the owner of a health spa and would give her 0 if she let him give her a massage and filled out a survey evaluating the massage afterward.The victim said Hanif also encouraged her to drink from an already opened container of Four Loko, an alcoholic beverage. She arrived at the alleged spa and said she felt as if she was 'buzzed.' At the end of the massage, the victim said Hanif offered her ,000 in exchange for sexual intercourse. The victim refused, at which time she was sexually assaulted by the suspect, police say. After, Hanif reportedly drove the victim back to her residence.Hanif was arrested on April 25 and lodged at the Oakland County Jail after being interviewed by detectives. During the investigation, detectives discovered he was listed as a possible suspect in a different sexual assault incident that occurred in December 2017.“The Detectives assigned to this case worked quickly and methodically in order to give this victim the justice she deserves,” Sheriff Michael J. Bouchard. “We will never tolerate behavior from those who commit sexual violence. I commend this victim for coming forward as she may have brought closure for other victims as well.
