CARLSBAD, Calif. (KGTV) — Three people were treated for gunshot wounds and one person was taken into custody in Carlsbad following a shooting Saturday morning.Carlsbad Police responded to calls of shots fired at the Pacific View Apartment Homes complex in the 5100 block of Whitman Way just before 6 a.m.Officers arrived to find a man and woman with gunshot wounds in a courtyard area of the complex. Both were treated by Carlsbad Fire crews and taken to a nearby hospital.MAP: Crime happening in your neighborhoodPolice later located another man with a gunshot wound in the apartment complex. He too was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.Carlsbad detectives were on the scene Saturday investigating the shooting. They believe the three knew each other and the shooting was not a random act.Police said one person is in custody but did not say whether that person was one of the three who were shot. (KGTV) -- The longest-serving mail carrier in Carlsbad is set to retire Friday after 58 years of service.Mack Mata Jr. will be recognized Friday in front of his peers and family.“It’s not often we celebrate an employee who has served the Postal Service for 58 years,” said Postmaster Cindy Gibson.In the fall of 1960, Mata and his fiancée were downtown when she saw a “help wanted” sign in the window of the post office. After applying and completing a test, Mata was sworn in as a postal employee in Carlsbad in November of the same year.Mata recalled his fond memories at the office, saying he would watch kids grow up and move away only to return and become his customers.Mata also remembers the time he saved a woman along his route. “One day, something told me I should check on her and sure enough, I found her lying on the ground after she had fallen and couldn’t get up. She said, ‘I knew you’d eventually show up to help me.'A lot has changed since then. Mata says he used to make special deliveries on his bicycle and stamps only cost four cents.Mata is now married to Sheila Mata, who works at the Vista Post Office, has two sons, four grandchildren and plans to spend lots of time gardening and traveling with his wife after retirement. 1278

(KGTV) -- U.S. Border Patrol agents arrested an El Salvadoran citizen Wednesday they say is a previously deported sex trafficker.Agents say Gloria Reyes-Lopez, 62, (pictured below) was arrested after Border Patrol agents noticed her illegally enter the United States at the El Centro sector around 7:30 Wednesday night.After her arrest, Reyes-Lopez was taken to the Calexico station for processing.“This individual is a convicted felon who preyed on young, innocent children,” said Assistant Chief Patrol Agent David S. Kim. “The men and women of the U.S. Border Patrol are this country’s first line of defense against threats like this.”Reyes-Lopez will be prosecuted for re-entry after removal, according to authorities. 752

Cat owners in a small New Zealand village have been given paws for thought after a local council pledged to carry out a ban on the animals.According to a "pest plan" put forward by Environment Southland, cat owners in Omaui, on the country's South Island, will have to neuter, microchip and register their cats with local authorities.The proposal states that when the cat dies, owners will not be allowed to purchase a new one."There's cats getting into the native bush; they're preying on native birds, they're taking insects, they're taking reptiles -- all sorts of things," biosecurity operations manager Ali Meade told the Newshub news service."They're doing quite a bit of damage."The proposal is also being backed by Omaui Landcare Charitable Trust Chairman John Collins, who says removing cats from the area would enable native animals to thrive.''We're not cat haters, but we want our environment to be wildlife-rich," he told the Otago Times.''Native wildlife is disappearing rapidly around the country and places like this where people still live and enjoy and hear the birdsong are probably few and far between,'' Collins said.Submissions on the Southland regional pest management plan close on October 23.New Zealand is currently embarking on an ambitious plan to become predator-free by 2050 with plans to eradicate species of possums, stoats and rats.The-CNN-Wire 1385
