in Highlands County. The Highlands County Sheriff's Office responded to a call of a body found in a wooded area in Lake Placid, Florida, a little before Thursday afternoon. Deputies identified the deceased man as 45-year-old Melvin Olds Jr.Following the investigation, deputies noticed Olds suffered injuries that would come from an animal attack, believed to be from a pack of dogs. The medical examiner also responded to the scene and could not find any injuries other than the ones caused by the dogs. Autopsy results found more than 100 dog bites on the victim's body, the sheriff's office said on Friday. A final determination of what killed Olds will be made after toxicology results. A pack of dogs was later spotted in the area shortly after Olds' body was discovered. Deputies say six dogs have been captured in the area and their bite size matches wounds on Old's body. However, authorities say that alone is not enough to say for sure that they were the animals involved. DNA from the captured dogs will be compared to DNA collected from the wounds, deputies say. Highlands County Sheriff’s Office Animal Services officers have set traps in the area and Animal Services units have been patrolling the area looking for loose dogs who may have been involved in the attack."While we may have the dogs that were responsible for this horrible tragedy, we won’t know for sure for a while,” Sheriff Paul Blackman said. “I want to encourage residents of Highway Park and the surrounding area to be on the lookout for any loose dogs, especially those that seem aggressive. We don’t want anyone else to be injured.” 1617

Yet another health concern for 2020 – the Lyme Disease Research Group reports that a mild winter could make this year's tick season especially rough.Eva Sapi, the director of the research group, told CNN that “we have a bad year for the ticks,” calling it a “perfect storm.”Dr. Sorana Segal-Maurer told CNN that hikers and campers may "just explode into the outdoors, and there may not be the same thoughtful approach" to preventing exposure.Segal-Maurer is the director of the Dr. James Rahal, Jr. Division on Infectious Diseases at New York Presbyterian Queens health car system."I'm a little nervous that their guard may be down just a slight bit," she said.Last year, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced an increase in tick-borne diseases like Lyme disease.Follow these tips to prevent exposure to ticks:1. Use an insect repellent with DEET2. Place socks over pants and wear long-sleeved shirts to block ticks from getting near your skin3. Wear light-colored clothing to make ticks easier to spot4. Do a body check when you get back indoorsTicks can carry the bacteria that causes Lyme disease, which can lead to rashes that often looks like bullseyes. Lyme disease also has some of the same symptoms as COVID-19, such as fever, chills and headache. If left untreated, the CDC says a Lyme disease infection can spread to joints, the heart, and the nervous system, leading to more problems.Click here to learn more from the CDC about ticks and the threats they pose. 1503

late Monday night after the animal was aggressive, grabbing his arm and tearing his pants. However, the owner of the dog, Larry Massey, said the officer misunderstood what was happening because he was having a seizure, shooting his dog named Butch.According to a news release from the city, they received a call at 11:59 p.m. by a passerby that a man was passed out on the side of the road. Two officers, identified by the city as Rojas and Daigneault (their first names were not provided), arrived at that location and found Massey unresponsive. Police said that Massey had informed officers in the past that due to a medical issue, he has seizures. The news released said Rojas did a "sternum rub" to revive Massey. While Rojas was assisting Massey, police said Massey's dog growled at and attacked Daigneault, grabbing his right pants leg with its teeth and tearing his pants.Police said Daigneault pushed the dog away with his foot, but the dog lunged at Daigneault again, grabbing the officer's arm. Daigneault pushed the dog away a second time, but the dog lunged at Daigneault's face. Police said Daigneault then shot the dog to protect himself and others. The dog was transported to a local veterinarian's office but was pronounced dead upon arrival. Police said the dog was not wearing a service dog vest. The case is under investigation. This story was originally published by Stephanie Susskind on 1407

in the Crown Heights section of Brooklyn Tuesday night, according to the NYPD.The initial incident took place around 9:26 p.m. local time when reports came in of a man who had been shot, according to NYPD Chief of Department Terence Monahan. When officers responded at the corner of Bergen Street and Rochester Avenue, witnesses told them the suspect was further up the block on Bergen Street.Officers found the armed suspect hiding behind a tree, according to Monahan. They gave orders for the man to drop his weapon for over a minute. When the man refused, 10 officers shot at the suspect.Monahan added that body cameras and witnesses' Facebook updates prove that the officers ordered the man to drop his gun, and the suspect refused. The gunman was pronounced dead and a handgun was recovered at the scene, police said. The original shooting victim was taken to a local hospital and is in stable condition. The officers involved in the shooting were also taken to local hospitals and treated for tinnitus, according to Monahan.Monahan emphasized that the shooting was unrelated to any of the protests going on in the city over the death of George Floyd, who was killed in police custody. The city 1197
