ESCONDIDO (KGTV) - Monday morning neighbors posted about a rash of graffiti in Escondido, a block away from Glen View Elementary school, outraged at the content and vandalism.On East Mission Avenue, just past Midway Drive, a home and two power boxes stained with black spray paint. One of the designs looked like a Star of David, causing concern online, worried the vandalism was anti-semitic."I noticed the graffiti over there, and that's just a disgrace," Grandmother Rose Ochoa said as she paused on her daily walk with two grandchildren on their way to pick up another grandchild."I feel disrespected. I feel like there's a lot of hate," Christina Landers said. She's lived in this neighborhood for about 27 years and said the graffiti has spread closer to her home, "it's crazy, it's like they're messing up our side of town.""I mean it's everywhere, you can't walk down a block without seeing it," Ochoa said. She moved to San Diego from Los Angeles and said she loves this neighborhood."I think they're too young to point it out right now," she said referencing her 4-year-old granddaughter and 2-year-old grandson, "and I'm thankful for that, but there's going to come a time that I'll have to explain it to them, and that's going to be hard because I teach them at home do not to write on the walls, do not write on the chairs and then we walk out here and see everything on the walls."One of the tags included what looked like the Star of David, concerning the owner of the home that was tagged."I talked to the guy, and the guy says I don't have any enemies I don't know why they'd do this to me?" Landers said.Around 11 a.m. the Escondido Graffiti Eradication Unit drove up, ready to repaint the walls and electrical boxes."It's very rewarding to be able to give back to a community I've lived in my whole life," City Worker Nate Tunnell said.Both he and his coworker said the work is constant, and thankful neighbors make it worthwhile."We've been fighting them, and it looks like we've been beating them too, so that's always going to put a smile on my face," Tunnell said. "Right on you're doing a good job!" (KGTV) - Surveillance video shows a thief going shopping overnight at a trailer company in Escondido."It's heartbreaking," said Alea Barreto, manager at Norco Trailers.Barreto says on Saturday night, video shows a pickup truck parked outside their fence. Nearby, a man appears to be scoping things out. The next night, just before midnight, he's back. He retrieves something from the truck and uses it to cut a hole in the fence. Once that happens, he backs his truck through the hole and onto the property, before he begins hauling away trailers. On the video, a man in a hoodie is seen browsing the lot. He hitches a landscaping trailer, but before he can get it out, the trailer becomes detached. He attaches it and drives off."Every time I watch it, it's more painful," said Barreto.The pain is felt over and over. Not long after the truck is seen leaving, the truck is back and hauling away another trailer. Within a few hours, four trailers are stolen. Three of the thefts are caught on video. The total loss is about ,000. The company is insured, but a possible hike in insurance rates is not worth it. They've decided to eat the cost. The business is a family-owned shop. "Just trying to put food on the family table, and nope, someone else feels like they deserve it instead," said Barreto.The truck is believed to be a silver GMC or Chevy pickup. Emily Dorffer is a walking story, so it’s fitting she plans to make a career out of telling them.“I’m just one of those determined little stinkers that just never gives up,” Dorffer said.An important chapter in her life will end soon — the next time she walks the Johns Hopkins University campus it will be as a graduate.The English major's love for writing started at a young age, and she never let Cerebral Palsy keep the words from flowing. “In my case, that means I have some slight fine motor skills difficult,” Dorffer said. “Which basically for me means messy handwriting, and I get a little bit tired if I have to write a whole lot at once.”So, how did she get to the point of becoming a published author and college graduate?“Typing is no problem at all.”But don't call her an inspiration.“It’s my life it’s my normal, I understand that it’s not most people’s version of normal but it’s mine.”Dorffer put together together an anthology of stories from disabled writers from around the world.“There’s a wide range of topics. There’s some simple stuff like a character just goes and shops for groceries and you see how her anxiety disorder affects her,” Dorfer said.The stories for (Dis) Ability: A Short Story Anthology started piling in.“This story deals with more assistive technology and the adjustment to that as well the character's self-image and how that develops through the story,” Dorffer said.Shifting the focus away from the disability to the strong storytelling of talented authors.“It’s an intimidating issue to talk about something that their just not familiar with and they're afraid of offending people obviously.Her mother Virginia couldn't be prouder of her favorite haiku writer. “Even as a parent I never knew she could accomplish what she has accomplished. If you just let anybody do what their passionate about it’s amazing what they can do.
