However, one local company has found a way to deal with these challenges, especially as kids get ready to start a new school year. Brain Balance of San Diego offers a holistic program that specializes in getting to the root of children's challenges."Those challenges might be academically, socially, or behavioral, says office director Amanda Lee. "We see a lot of parents who come in with children struggling with attention, and sensory processing."And at Brain Balance, they stay away from medications. "That just looks at the tip of the iceberg, and is a band-aid."They believe in the power of exercise, with workouts such as jump rope, balance beam, and planks just to give a few examples."It's fantastic for the brain, but the type of exercise we do here is very intentional. It works on very specific areas of the brain, but especially the connections between the different regions which are connected with development, processing, learning, and every day functioning."Many families are now seeing their kids struggle, as they deal with the pandemic and distance learning. "It's just been difficult," says the father of twin girls going through the Brain Balance program. "It's been nice because Brain Balance has been there, with emails as well as checking in with phone calls. But now having schools start with the distance learning, it's going to be hard to gauge them, but I can see they've gained."So what are the red flags to look for in your children? Lee says there are a few. "Are they able to really focus on the lesson at hand, and what about reading? SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - At least six employees with the VA San Diego Healthcare System counseling center have tested positive for the coronavirus.On Thursday, 10News spoke with several people who work at the location. The employees we spoke with said when people started having symptoms, they asked to work from home but were told to keep showing up.Too afraid to use their names or participate in any type of recorded interview for fear of retaliation from officials at the VA, the employees detailed their concerns over the phone. RELATED: Six San Diego VA employees test positive for coronavirusOne person told 10News, “We were begging for about two weeks to do telework.”Another employee said, “We were reporting cases of potential COVID (COVID-19) and asking for telework to quarantine and keep safe, and the answers we got back were, ‘We'll look into that.’” The employees tell 10News they work with homeless veterans and veterans with histories of chronic homelessness. Employees point to one sent last week where the director wrote, “You may have seen news reports about increased telework opportunities for federal employees. While this has been widely publicized, requests for the approval of new telework agreements will be very limited due to the limited bandwidth of telework systems and the need to have staff onsite to ensure the continuation of operations. Although some of you may have duties that could be performed remotely and would like to telework, at this time we need all employees who can work, to be present at their worksite.”At Wednesday's press conference with the County of San Diego, 10News asked county leaders if they aware of the cases at the VA office."The cases that are at that location are known to us and we are under an active investigation with the staff at that site," officials said. Per CDC guidance and VA protocols, individuals known to be at risk for a COVID-19 infection are immediately isolated to prevent potential spread to others.”Team 10 reached out to the VA spokesperson Thursday afternoon with additional questions regarding the allegations from employees. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - As we continue to work through the pandemic, a couple of Carmel Valley kids are working to spread “some good news” for San Diegans. Brothers Zach and Asher Swazey are putting together their own newscasts.Its called “SGN San Diego.” The newscast is filled with good news.“You want to have something that will affect people in a positive way,” says 13-year-old Zach.The brothers are now working on episode two. They say it was a lot of work putting everything together.“It took us 2-3 weeks,” says ten-year-old Asher. “We went through multiple stages of editing. It took a little of time to make the script and film.”The boys say they were inspired to start SGN San Diego after watching actor and filmmaker John Krasinski on Youtube.The boys say their video is getting more views, but their headline is to make people feel good.“When you’re making a YouTube channel, it’s not about how many likes you get or how many subscribers, it’s how it affects people.”The brothers say their parents are also a big help. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Border officials say the man shot and killed on Friday night by a Border Patrol agent behind the Las Americas Premium Outlets mall was trying to enter the U.S. illegally.A statement from Aaron Heitke, Chief Patrol Agent for the U.S. Border Patrol, San Diego Sector reads:“On Friday, October 23, 2020, at approximately 5:45 p.m., a United States Border Patrol agent responded to apprehend a man illegally entering the United States immediately west of the port of entry in San Ysidro, California. During the arrest, an altercation ensued and the agent discharged his firearm, wounding the man, who was later identified as an adult Mexican national. Nearby agents and law enforcement personnel responded immediately and initiated lifesaving efforts until emergency medical services arrived. At approximately 6:25 p.m. the man was pronounced deceased at the scene. The investigation is currently being led by the San Diego Police Department. Customs and Border Protection will continue to fully cooperate with the ongoing investigation. The specifics of this incident have also been shared with FBI, DHS OIG and CBP Office of Professional Responsibility. Additional updates will be provided by the San Diego Police Department, inquiries should be directed to them.”SDPD added Saturday that the 30-year-old man was shot once in the torso by the agent after he fought the agent, who sustained minor injuries.Social justice leaders with the American Friends Service Committee and Alliance San Diego have sent a letter to SDPD calling in part for an independent investigation to be handled only by police, not border officials or unions. Part of the letter reads, “Any involvement or coordination with these agencies, and specifically with CIIT has the potential to corrupt the investigation and could be considered an obstruction of justice.”Pedro Rios with the American Friends Service Committee said that he and others are considering holding a demonstration on Sunday. “I think for us it's important to ensure that people are treated with dignity regardless of who they are and we shouldn't jump to conclusions about the person who is now a victim and is now deceased,” Rios told ABC 10News on Saturday. He added, “I think we should permit the investigation — an unobstructed investigation — to move forward and that way we get to know exactly what took place that led to the demise of this individual.”There's now a call for evidence related to the shooting to be released right away. “We know that there's a lot of surveillance cameras in the area, not only belonging to Customs and Border Protection and [the] Department of Homeland Security but also the Las Americas mall has a lot of cameras in the area,” said Rios.Officials are not releasing the name of the man who was shot or the name of the agent who fired at him. 2848
